Sweden became the first home team to win the world hockey championships in 27 years, beating Switzerland 5-1 on Sunday for its ninth title.

Vancouver Canucks star Henrik Sedin had two goals and an assist, and Buffalo Sabres goalie Jhonas Enroth made 26 saves to help Sweden become the first team to win the title on home ice since the Soviet Union in 1986. Switzerland earned its first medal in 60 years.

"It was a tight game," Sedin said. "It could have gone either way, I felt. It was lucky we got our first two goals pretty quickly after their first one. After we scored our third, it felt pretty calm on the bench."

Simon Hjalmarrson, Philadelphia's Erik Gustafsson and Dallas' Loui Eriksson also scored for Sweden. Roman Josi had the lone goal for Switzerland.

"It's an unbelievable feeling. You can't put it into words," New Jersey's Henrik Tallinder said. "As soon as we got our legs and got that first goal, I thought we controlled the game pretty well."

Reto Berra made 29 saves, and Nino Niederreiter, Julian Walker and Reto Suri scored to help Switzerland beat the United States 3-0 on Saturday in the world hockey semifinals.

Switzerland, 9-0 in the tournament, will face Sweden in the final Sunday. Sweden beat Finland 3-0.

The last time Switzerland won a world championship medal was in 1953, when it took bronze.

"It's something historic for Swiss hockey and Switzerland itself. To get this far in the world tournament is pretty special for the whole country right now," Switzerland coach Sean Simpson said.

Paul Stastny had two goals and two assists and Craig Smith had five assists on Thursday to give the United States an 8-3 win over Russia and a spot in the semifinals of the hockey world championships.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will join Russia's team at the ice hockey world championships in Finland.

It will be Ovechkin's ninth appearance in the tournament. He helped Russia win the gold medal last year and in 2008. He has 26 goals and 18 assists in 55 games.

Slovakia defeated the United States 4-1 at the ice hockey world championship on Tuesday.

The U.S. had a chance to clinch the group, but finished third and will meet Russia in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Veteran NHL coach Mike Keenan has signed a two-year contract to coach the Russian club Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

The Kontinental Hockey League club announced the deal on its website Monday but did not disclose financial details.

The United States, Canada, Russia and Switzerland clinched quarterfinal berths at the hockey world championships Sunday.

The Americans beat Germany 3-0.

Bobby Butler and Paul Stastny scored within the first five minutes for the U.S., and Stephen Gionta put the game away midway through the third period. John Gibson finished with 30 saves.

Jeff Skinner scored the game-winner in the third period in Canada's 2-1 win over the Czech Republic.

Skinner went around the net for a wraparound goal against the Czechs. Wayne Simmonds gave Canada the lead in the first period before Petr Koukal tied it six minutes later.

Reigning champion Russia came back after two losses to beat Slovakia 3-1, and unbeaten Switzerland defeated Norway also by 3-1 to win its sixth game.

Gibson has allowed one goal in two games.

"The competition and the players here are great, so it's a big challenge," Gibson said. "But my teammates are making my job a lot easier. With the defense that we have, whenever there is a rebound they are always there to help me out."

The United States beat France 4-2 Saturday to take the lead in its group at the ice hockey world championships.

Stephen Gionta and Bobby Butler gave the Americans a 2-0 lead in the first period, and captain Paul Stastny and David Moss added goals in the third.

Craig Smith had a hat trick and teenager John Gibson was stellar in net to lead the United States over host Finland 4-1 at the ice hockey world championship on Wednesday.

Gibson, who finished with 31 saves, was a bold choice for the Americans, who moved above Finland in their group -- second to Russia.

Russia got two late goals to beat the United States 5-3 in a hard-fought game, while Canada scored four unanswered goals en route to a 7-1 rout of Norway on Tuesday at the ice hockey world championships.
