Midfielder Will Johnson recorded a goal and an assist and forward Jose Valencia scored his first career MLS goal to help the Portland Timbers to a come-from-behind 2-2 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps FC before 19,823 fans at BC Place on Saturday night, extending Portland's MLS-club record unbeaten streak to 10 games.

Trailing 2-1 following a goal from Vancouver midfielder Gershon Koffie in the 54th minute, Portland suffered a further setback when defender Futty Danso was issued a straight red card in the 81st minute after he and Vancouver forward Camilo Sanvezzo got tangled up as the two players raced for a loose ball in the Timbers' defensive third.

Playing with 10 men, Portland found the game-tying goal in the 84th minute. Gaining possession near midfield, Johnson sent a long pass over the top of the Vancouver defense to Valencia at the top of the penalty box. Valencia, making his first appearance since a 1-1 draw against Seattle Sounders FC on March 16, settled the ball in stride and outmaneuvered a Vancouver defender before slotting the equalizer past Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Brad Knighton.

The Timbers have earned a result in five of six matches after conceding the opening goal. They became just the second team this season to earn a tie or win after receiving a red card while trailing in a match, extending their road unbeaten streak to seven games (including the 2012 season).

Johnson factored in both of Portland's goals, attempted a team-high four shots and became the first Timbers player to record a goal in consecutive matches this season. The team captain scored his career-high fifth goal of the season, converting a game-tying penalty kick in 52nd minute with a low shot inside the left post. Johnson drew the penalty when his shot from the left side of the penalty box struck the arm of Vancouver defender Andy O'Brien. The spot kick was Portland's second of the season and first since Johnson converted a penalty in a comeback, 2-2 draw at Colorado on March 30.

Portland (4-1-7, 19pts) remains in second place in the Western Conference, two points ahead of both Real Salt Lake and the LA Galaxy, who each play on Sunday. The Timbers have earned a league-high seven draws this season and equaled their road goal-scoring total compared to the team's first two MLS seasons. Portland recorded 10 goals in 17 road games in both the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Following Saturday's match, the Timbers have scored 10 goals in six road games this season.

Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made two saves, while Portland recorded 10 or more shots for the fifth consecutive match (and third straight road game).

Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Knighton made two saves in his first appearance of the 2013 MLS season and Camilo attempted a game-high five shots as Vancouver (3-4-5, 13pts) earned a point in its first Cascadia Cup match of the season.

Vancouver claimed the lead against the run of play in the 24th minute on Camilo's third goal of the season. After earning a free kick at the top of the penalty box, the Brazilian forward fired a shot over the defensive wall and into the upper right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

Camilo helped create Vancouver's second goal, shielding the ball inside the penalty box before laying off a pass to Koffie for a right-footed strike past Ricketts.

Several minutes before the opening goal, Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri had a shot from an acute angle inside the box deflected away by Knighton and forward Rodney Wallace had a strong header saved in front of the goal. Wallace's effort was one of 16 shots for the Timbers during the contest.

The Timbers continue a three-match road stretch on Saturday, May 25, against Eastern Conference-rival D.C. United at RFK Stadium; kickoff is 4 p.m. (Pacific). The matchup will be televised live on ROOT SPORTS, with local radio broadcasts available on 750 The Game and in Spanish on La Pantera 940AM.

Midfielder Diego Valeri recorded one goal and two assists and forward Rodney Wallace registered a goal and an assist to help guide the Portland Timbers to a 3-0 win over Chivas USA before a sold-out JELD-WEN Field on Sunday afternoon, extending Portland's MLS-club record unbeaten streak to nine games.

The capacity crowd of 20,647 marked the 40th consecutive sellout at JELD-WEN Field since the Timbers joined MLS in 2011.

The Timbers claimed the lead just past the half-hour mark on Wallace's third goal of the season. Valeri then doubled the lead, 2-0, in the 70th minute and midfielder Will Johnson provided Portland's third goal in second-half stoppage time as the club matched its largest margin of victory as an MLS side in the 3-0 win.

Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts and the Timbers defense held Chivas USA to eight total shots, recording its fourth straight shutout at home and extending its home shutout streak to 390 consecutive minutes.

Portland (4-1-6, 18pts) moves ahead of Real Salt Lake and into second place in the Western Conference.

Valeri factored in all three goals and attempted a team-high four shots, Johnson set a new career-high with his fourth goal of the season and Wallace matched a career-high with his third goal on the campaign to help the Timbers extend their unbeaten run to an MLS-best nine games.

Goalkeeper Patrick McLain made four saves in his first MLS start and defender Steve Purdy had a team-best three shots as Chivas USA (3-5-2, 11pts) suffered its fourth loss in its last five games.

After a couple of close chances in the opening 30 minutes, the Timbers were able to break the deadlock in the 34th minute. Following a Chivas USA corner kick, goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts initiated a quickly played counter attack that went through Valeri and forward Ryan Johnson to send Wallace in on goal down the left channel. Inside the box, Wallace placed a shot over an on-rushing McLain and into an open goal.

Portland found its second goal of the match in the 70th minute. Maintaining possession in the final third, the Timbers were able to work the ball to forward Darlington Nagbe on the right side, who then played it into Wallace near the top of the box. Wallace slipped a pass into the box for Valeri, beating the offside trap, and Valeri beat McLain one-on-one for his third goal of the season.

Johnson capped the scoring two minutes into second-half stoppage time. Following a short corner from Valeri to midfielder Kalif Alhassan on the left side, Johnson took the ball around the top left corner of the penalty area and hit a curling shot into the bottom right corner of the goal. Johnson's goal was the Timbers' MLS-leading 14th second-half goal scored in 2013.

Two minutes before the opening goal by Wallace, Valeri had a shot from just beyond the top of the box hit off the crossbar; it was one of 12 first-half shot attempts for the Timbers.

The Timbers begin a three-match road stretch on Saturday, May 18, against Northwest-rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place; kickoff is 4 p.m. (Pacific). The Cascadia Cup matchup will be televised live on ROOT SPORTS, with local radio broadcasts available on 750 The Game and in Spanish on La Pantera 940AM.

Notes:

* The capacity crowd marked the 40th consecutive sellout at JELD-WEN Field since the Timbers joined MLS in 2011. * With the win, the Timbers extend their MLS-club unbeaten streak to nine matches, which is tied with FC Dallas for the longest in MLS this season. * The Timbers move into second place in the Western Conference with the victory, which is the highest the club has placed in the conference through 11 matches of a season. * The Timbers' record of 4-1-6 (18pts) is the club's best start to an MLS season through 11 matches. * Portland defeated Chivas USA for the second time (2-4-0) in the all-time MLS series between the two clubs; both wins have come at JELD-WEN Field. * The Timbers matched their largest margin of victory as an MLS side - three goals - in the win over Chivas USA, a mark first set twice during the 2011 season (3-0 win vs. LA Galaxy on Aug. 3, 2011; 3-0 win vs. New England on Sept. 16, 2011). * The Timbers scored three goals in a match for the third time this season, and with 18 overall on the campaign the club is tied with FC Dallas for the most goals scored in the Western Conference. * Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts and the Timbers defense recorded its fourth consecutive shutout at home and extended its current home shutout streak to 390 minutes - the longest home shutout streak in the club's MLS history. * The Timbers are 4-2-3 all-time in day matches at JELD-WEN Field as an MLS side, including an unbeaten 3-0-3 record since the start of the 2012 campaign. * With second-half goals from Diego Valeri and Will Johnson, the Timbers lead MLS with 14 goals scored in the second half. * Valeri recorded one goal and two assists against Chivas USA, matching the Timbers MLS record for points in a single game (4). He is tied for the league lead in assists with four. * Valeri logged two assists in a match for the second time this season, also achieving the feat in the 3-2 road win over Sporting KC on April 27. His pair of assists against Chivas USA marked the fifth time in Timbers MLS history in which a player has recorded multiple assists in a single game. * With three shots on goal, Valeri matched Portland's MLS mark for shots on goal in a single match; it's the third time this season in which he has recorded the feat (March 3 vs. New York; April 21 at San Jose) * Portland set a new MLS-club record with 12 corner kicks against Chivas USA. * Valeri took 11 corner kicks, setting a new record for individual corner kicks attempted in a single match by a Timbers MLS player. Jack Jewsbury held the previous mark at nine (achieved twice during the 2011 campaign). * Rodney Wallace and Darlington Nagbe become the third and fourth players, respectively, to record points in back-to-back matches this season. Wallace assisted on Nagbe's goal in the 1-1 draw at FC Dallas on May 8. * Wallace scored his third goal of the season in the first half, matching a career-high in goals first set during his rookie season in 2009 with D.C. United. * Midfielder Will Johnson scored his fourth goal of the season, which set a new career-high for goals in a season. He is tied with forward Ryan Johnson for the club lead in goal-scoring. * Chivas USA's two shots in the first half were the fewest shots by an opponent in a half this season. * With 19 shots against Chivas USA, the Timbers have recorded 10 or more shots in 37 consecutive home matches at JELD-WEN Field. * Chivas USA goalkeeper Patrick McLain made his first MLS start Sunday at JELD-WEN Field.
I'm enjoying the Timber's early success. But I feel like some of those ties could have been wins and could come back to haunt the Timbers.

Timbers play bottom place team Chivas USA today in Pdx. This game isn't a gimmie by any means as they tied last time and Chivas is better than their point total shows.

Still, if Timbers area a playoff team and more hopefully a top 3 team in the division, they need to get 3 pts out of games like today.

Mother's Day Gift for home fans: Timber 2-0

Forward Darlington Nagbe scored his third goal of the season and goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made four saves as the Portland Timbers earned a 1-1 draw against MLS leader FC Dallas at FC Dallas Stadium on Wednesday to extend their unbeaten streak to an MLS-best eight games.

Portland and FC Dallas, two of the top clubs in the Western Conference, entered the match each on a string of seven-match unbeaten streaks. FC Dallas trailed at home for the first time this season when Nagbe lifted the Timbers to a 1-0 lead in the 70th minute. FC Dallas then took advantage of a penalty kick awarded seven minutes later and forward Kenny Cooper converted the attempt to tie the match at 1-1.

The Timbers (3-1-6, 15pts) remain the only club in MLS that is unbeaten on the road this season and extend their overall club-record road unbeaten string to six games dating back to the 2012 campaign. Portland sits in third place in the Western Conference.

Nagbe becomes the Timbers' MLS career leader in goal-scoring with his 11th career goal. Midfielder Rodney Wallace registered his first assist of the season and Ricketts recorded three of his four saves in the second half to help Portland earn its second result in its last three visits to FC Dallas Stadium.

Cooper scored his second goal of the season on the penalty-kick attempt, midfielder Fabian Castillo recorded three shots and goalkeeper Raúl Fernández made three saves for FC Dallas (6-1-3, 21pts), who, with the draw, dropped their first points at home this season. FC Dallas had won each of their first five home matches to open the 2013 campaign.

Portland claimed the lead 20 minutes from time, scoring its eighth goal on the road this season, which is tied for second-most in MLS. Wallace chipped a pass from the left side of the box across the penalty area, where Nagbe was on the back side and volleyed a bouncing shot by Fernández inside the right post.

The go-ahead strike by Nagbe was the first goal allowed by FC Dallas at home since March 17, ending a run of 347 consecutive shutout minutes at home, and marked the first time in 10 games this season in which FC Dallas conceded the opening goal of a match.

Referee Juan Guzman issued a yellow card to Portland defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste inside the box during play away from the ball in the 76th minute as the Timbers attempted to clear out an FC Dallas threat. The yellow set up a penalty-kick opportunity for the home side and Cooper was able to beat a diving Ricketts to the right side of the goal to tie the match at 1-1.

Ricketts made clutch save in the final minutes of the match to preserve the draw, tipping a deflected shot by Cooper from just beyond the top of the box over the goal in the 86th minute.

In the first half, Timbers midfielder Diego Chara made a perfectly-timed tackle just inside the box on FC Dallas midfielder David Ferreira charging in on goal to put an end to scoring chance by the home side in the 32nd minute.

Making his first start for the Timbers, forward Frederic Piquionne had one of his three first-half shot attempts tipped by Fernández off the left post in the 19th minute. FC Dallas striker Raul Perez had a header from near the penalty spot also rattle of the woodwork in the 67th minute.

On short turnaround, the Timbers return home to play host to Chivas USA on Sunday at JELD-WEN Field at 2 p.m. (Pacific). The match will be televised live locally on KPTV and nationally in Spanish on UniMás, with radio broadcasts available on 750 The Game and in Spanish on La Pantera 940AM.

Sporting KC defender Chance Myers scored twice in the first half, but Johnson also registered his goal and assist in the opening half to help the Timbers overcome deficits on two occasions as the Timbers and Sporting KC entered halftime locked at 2-2. Wallace tallied the decisive goal in the 58th minute - just the second second-half goal allowed by Sporting KC this season - and goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made two crucial saves late as the Timbers earned their first comeback road win as an MLS side.

Portland (3-1-4, 14pts) also set its MLS club record for longest unbeaten streak on the road at five games, dating back to the 2012 season. The Timbers are the only club in MLS that is unbeaten away from home in 2013.

Johnson tallied his team-leading fourth goal of the season, midfielder Diego Chara recorded his third assist of the campaign, midfielder Darlington Nagbe notched his 10th career MLS goal, Wallace scored his second goal on the campaign and goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made a season-high six saves for the Timbers. Portland moves into third place in the Western Conference with the win.

Meyers recorded the first two-goal performance of his MLS career, midfielder Benny Feilhaber logged his team-leading third assist, defenders Aurelien Collin and Matt Besler also recorded assists and goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen made four saves for Sporting KC (4-3-2, 14pts) in their first home loss of the season. The three goals conceded against the Timbers was the most allowed in a match this season by Sporting KC, who entered the weekend in first place in the Eastern Conference.

The scoring opened in the first minute of the match, as Myers got his head to a long throw-in by Besler from the right side. Myers nodded in his first goal of the season from the top of the six-yard box inside the right post just 43 seconds into the contest.

The Timbers pulled level in the 24th minute on their first goal scored off a corner kick this season. Midfielder Diego Valeri served in a ball from the right side into the penalty area. Johnson jumped in front of two Sporting KC players and headed a shot into the top left corner of the goal for his third goal in the last four games.

The corner kick that led to Johnson's goal was earned when Wallace's shot from just outside the top left corner of the box was batted wide by Nielsen.

Sporting KC regained the lead, 2-1, in the 29th minute. A Graham Zusi free kick started the play, and the ball was chipped into the box by Feilhaber. A short pass from Collin set up Myers for an open look from short range, and Myers slotted home his second of the night.

Pressure on Sporting KC at midfield caused a turnover, leading to the Timbers second goal of the first half. Valeri played a leading ball down the left channel for Johnson in a foot race with Collin. Johnson was the first to the ball and crossed the ball into the box for a wide open Nagbe. On his first touch, Nagbe delivered the game-tying goal from the top of the six-yard box.

The Timbers broke the deadlock in the 58th minute as a hard working effort from Chara led to Wallace's winning strike. Fighting off Sporting KC defenders, Chara worked the ball from the right touchline towards the center of the park before sending a perfectly weighted ball to Wallace running down the left side. Once inside the box, Wallace slotted a shot past an on-rushing Nielsen.

Ricketts made three saves in the second half, including two in second-half stoppage time on shots by Collin and substitute Mechack Jerome, highlighting another strong defensive performance by the Timbers in the second half. Portland, who held Sporting KC to just three shots on goal in the second half, has only allowed three second-half goals this season, the third-fewest in the league.

The Timbers return home to play host to the New England Revolution on Thursday, May 2, at JELD-WEN Field; kickoff is 7:30 p.m. (Pacific). The matchup against the Revolution will be televised on ROOT SPORTS, with radio broadcasts available on 750 The Game and in Spanish on La Pantera 940AM.
