An FBI agent shot and killed an Orlando man early Wednesday who had been questioned for several hours about his alleged ties to Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the victim's friend told local media.

FBI officials have confirmed that a man died while one of its agents was "conducting official duties," the Orlando Sentinel reports, but would not elaborate.

The Sentinel and WESH-TV identified the victim as 27-year-old Ibragim Todashev.

The television station quotes Khusn Taramiv, a friend of the victim, as saying both of them had been questioned for almost three hours Tuesday about the Boston bombing case.

Taramiv said his friend knew Boston bombings suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev because they were both mixed martial-arts fighters, WESH and The Sentinel report.

Taramiv told WESH that Todashev, who is an ethnic Chechen like Tsarnaev, had once lived in Boston and was a casual friend of the Boston bombing suspect. He said Todashev and Tsarnaev had spoken by phone or Skype for about five minutes about a week before the April 15 Boston bombings.

Ray Manzarek, a founding member of the 1960s rock group The Doors whose versatile and often haunting keyboards complemented Jim Morrison's gloomy baritone and helped set the mood for some of rock's most enduring songs, has died. He was 74.

Manzarek died Monday in Rosenheim, Germany, surrounded by his family, said publicist Heidi Robinson-Fitzgerald. She said the musician's manager, Tom Vitorino, confirmed Manzarek died after being stricken with bile duct cancer.

The Doors' original lineup, which also included drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robbie Krieger, was only together for a few years and they only made six studio albums. But the band has retained a large and obsessive following decades after Morrison's death, in 1971. The Doors have sold more than 100 million records and songs such as "Light My Fire" and "Riders On the Storm" are still "classic" rock favorites. For Doors admirers, the band symbolized the darker side of the Los Angeles lifestyle, what happened to the city after the sun went down and the Beach Boys fans headed home.

Rescue crews were searching Tuesday for survivors and victims of a massive tornado that had devastated a suburb of Oklahoma City, grinding up entire neighborhoods and pulverizing two elementary schools.

The swath of destruction in Moore, Okla., was up to a mile wide and 20 miles long. The state medical examiner’s office told the Associated Press early Tuesday that at least 40 more bodies were expected, in addition to the 51 people already confirmed dead as a result of Monday afternoon’s storm.

“The phone calls just keep coming,” said Amy Elliot, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office. She said 24 bodies had been taken to the medical examiner’s office in Oklahoma City, and most of those had been positively identified. Elliott said she could not say how many of the dead were children, or were from the obliterated Plaza Towers Elementary School.

Some youngsters were pulled from the rubble of that school on Monday, wet and dirty but alive. In television interviews, a few said teachers used their bodies to shield students from airborne debris. As darkness fell Monday, dozens of rescuers in hard hats continued to pick through the wreckage looking for children and staffers who were missing and could be trapped.

Families were told to convene at two churches to await reunification with their loved ones.

A South Florida man caught the largest Burmese python -- 18 feet, 8 inches long and 128 pounds -- ever found in Florida.

The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission said Jason Leon, of Hialeah, found the 18-foot, 8-inch beast while riding in a rural area in southeast Miami-Dade County on May 11. About 3 feet of the snake was spotted sticking out of some roadside brush.

Leon said he stopped his car, grabbed the snake from behind its head, and started dragging it out of the brush. When the snake tried to wrap itself around Leon's leg, he called to his friends for help and then killed it with a knife.

The female snake was not carrying any eggs, the University of Florida scientists said.

A tiny device that can recharge cell phone batteries in as little as 30 seconds won 18-year-old Eesha Khare a major science award that will help fund her college education at Harvard University.

Khare traveled from her California home to Phoenix last week for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, where her invention was honored as one of two winners of Young Scientist Awards.

"I'm in a daze. I can't believe this happened," Khare, a senior at Lynbrook High School in Saratoga, told CNN affiliate KPIX 5.

Khare's device, a black, rectangular type of supercapacitor just over an inch long, can charge a cell phone battery in 20 to 30 seconds, she said.

"I developed a new supercapacitor, which is basically an energy storage device which can hold a lot of energy in a small amount of volume," she told KPIX 5. The technology may also be able to speed up charging of automobile batteries, she said.

A videotape of the award ceremony showed an ecstatic Khare trotting up to the stage when her name was announced in Phoenix, then standing with other winners as the audience at the fair applauded and confetti fell on them.

The award includes a $50,000 prize that will come in handy when Khare heads to Harvard in the fall, she told KPIX 5. With a laugh, she predicted that "I will be setting the world on fire."

The Yahoo board has approved a deal to pay $1.1 billion for the blogging site Tumblr, according to The Wall Street Journal's All Things D.

Yahoo will pay for the blogging site in cash, All Things D reported. Yahoo nor Tumblr released official statements.

Tumblr's media team did not respond to repeated requests for comment. In a statement to NBC News, a Yahoo spokeswoman said Yahoo would not comment on "rumors or speculation."

Yahoo no doubt has something up its sleeve, as the company invited CNBC to a press event on Monday afternoon where it would "share something special." It is unclear whether that is related to a deal with Tumblr.

Also unclear is whether Tumblr has accepted Yahoo's reported offer.

Talk of a deal began circulating Friday, after All Things D reported that the two companies had been in talks for several weeks.

The driver of a car ran over a man and dragged him for 4 miles before another motorist notified him of the body under his vehicle.

The man who was dragged lived and remains at the Medical College of Virginia with serious injuries.

James City County police spokesman Stephen Rubino said the drivers of two cars were racing in the 8900 block of Richmond Road around 3 p.m. Saturday. A 31-year-old Lanexa man driving a 1997 Volkswagen lost control near the James City Recycling center. The car hydroplaned on the wet road, spun several times, struck a tree and ejected the driver.

The driver of the second car, a 22-year old Providence Forge man, told police he had been racing with the driver of the Volkswagen, saw the vehicle crash, and ran over what he believed to be debris from the accident.

The debris tuned out to be the driver of the Volkswagen. The 22-year-old man stopped in New Kent County after another motorist notified him of the body under his Honda.

An 8-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl in the Volkswagen suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash. Rubino said medics took the girl to MCV and the boy to Williamsburg Sentara Regional Hospital. Their relationship to the driver was not clear, Rubino said.

A big asteroid will cruise by Earth at the end of the month, making its closest approach to our planet for at least the next two centuries.

The May 31 flyby of asteroid 1998 QE2, which is about 1.7 miles (2.7 kilometers) long, poses no threat to Earth. The space rock will come within 3.6 million miles (5.8 million km) of our planet — about 15 times the distance separating Earth and the moon, researchers say.

But the close approach will still be dramatic for astronomers, who plan to get a good look at 1998 QE2 using two huge radar telescopes — NASA's 230-foot (70 meters) Goldstone dish in California and the 1,000-foot (305 m) Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico

Big things happen in threes.

With Iron Man 3 heading into its third weekend, now is the perfect time to look ahead to what Marvel Studios may be planning for its own third act — the evolving multi-movie slate known as Phase Three.

Phase One for the comic book studio was the series of films that culminated in last year’s The Avengers. Phase Two begins with Iron Man 3, and will build to Avengers 2 in 2015, with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World, and Guardians of the Galaxy in between.

The question that still hasn’t been resolved, even internally at the studio… What comes next?

Here’s what we learned:

Water Trapped For 1.5 Billion Years Could Hold Ancient Life

Scientists have discovered water that has been trapped in rock for more than a billion years. The water might contain microbes that evolved independently from the surface world, and it's a finding that gives new hope to the search for life on other planets.

The water samples came from holes drilled by gold miners near the small town of Timmins, Ontario, about 350 miles north of Toronto. Deep in the Canadian bedrock, miners drill holes and collect samples. Sometimes they hit pay dirt; sometimes they hit water, which seeps out from tiny crevices in the rock.

Recently, a team of scientists (who had been investigating water samples from other mines) approached the miners and asked them for fluid from newly drilled boreholes.

Greg Holland, a geochemist at Lancaster University in England, and his colleagues wanted to know just how long that fluid had been trapped in the rock. So they looked at the decay of radioactive atoms found in the water and calculated that it had been bottled up for a long time — at least 1.5 billion years.

"That is the lower limit for the age," Holland says. It could be a billion years older. That means the water was sealed in the rock before humans evolved, before pterosaurs flew and before multicellular life.
