Draft Picks: The Nets' 2008 first round pick (Lottery); the Mavs' 2008 first round pick; the Nets' 2008 second round pick; the Nets' 2009 first round pick; The Nets' 2010 first round pick; the Mavs' 2010 first round pick. (Nets' second round pick in 2009 is owed the Sonics from the Mikki Moore trade).
Draft Rights: Christian Drejer. (Drejer may have retired from European basketball, but the Nets retain his rights and can trade them, bundling them with a trade exception to return a player, for example.) Cap Exceptions: MLE @ approx. $5.5 million, LLE @ approx. $1.9 million; trade exceptions worth $1.68 million and $770,000. (The two trade exceptions expire Feb. 19, 2009. They cannot be combined.) 2009 Expiring Contracts: Stromile Swift, $6.2 million. (Rookie contracts for Marcus Williams, Josh Boone and Maurice Ager can be extended through 2009-10 if team options are exercised before October 31. If they are not exercise by that date, the contracts become expiring contracts. None would be larger than $1.3 million.) |

Nice list. Two more potential assets are Diop's Bird rights (to facilitate a sign and trade), and Krstic's contract, which if we submit a qualifying offer and don't extend will become an additional expiring contract worth $2.8M.

Don't forget one I forgot about until Iannazzone mentioned it today. They have Van Horn's non-guaranteed contract for next year at @ $4M, which I presume they can use until June 30th. That's a VERY valuable trading piece if young players or draft picks are going out.

That's a VERY valuable trading piece if young players or draft picks are going out. I believe Al is wrong. According to the CBA, as discussed in Larry Coon's CBA FAQ, "Teams are free to make trades again once their season has ended, but cannot trade players whose contracts are ending or could end due to an option". Also, "Players with ending contracts (including players whose contracts might end due to an option or ETO) cannot be traded after the trading deadline (players whose contracts are not ending can be traded after the last day of the team's season and before July 1)." That appears to cover Van Horn. http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm |

(when not only our season ended, but the entire season officially ended, and we won't be "after the deadline" either. Because that's when we can trade him IMO) It's october 30, when his salary for next year becomes guaranteed. You guys remember David Wesley? We acquired him in the offseason, and then terminated his contract... Isn't that the same thing? I know Wesley had a 250k of his salary guaranteed, which KVH hase none of, but it still doesn't make a difference to me in this case. I think we can use this asset on draft day, or before next season... Am I right? That would mean we can combine him, Stro, and Hassell, and we can match about 19 million of incoming salary in a trade with these 3 (2 in reality) players. (add Marcus and a pick, and how about JO? that would be a 3 for 1 deal without giving up RJ..) |

I just read Al's whole article, and he is saying the same thing what I said, with the exception of one thing:
an unknown amount of KVH's contract for next year is guaranteed, so this is the exact same thing as the David Wesley situation last year. The point is that with combining KVH and Stro, we can match about 13 million in a trade, while they will only cost about 7 million for the taker. This is really a HUGE asset. Yes, if we make a trade, that's a 6 million hit for our salary cap situation, but the point is that we really can get an all-star big without giving up RJ. This expiring packege with 1 or two of the valuable young assets that we have (Sean, Nenad, Marcus, Boone, and the two first round picks) could really land us an all-star big man. Then if we get an upgrade over Boki for our wing shooter for the MLE (or for Krstic in a sign and trade), than this Team is very well constructed, and structurally very "Boston-like": Pg: Harris / Armstrong / (Marcus, if he is left after the big trade) SG: Carter/ Ager / 1st rd pick SF: Jefferson/ Boki (or upgraded wing shooter) PF: JO, Brand, Kirilenko, Marion, or whoever we can get in the big trade/ (Sean, or Boone, whichever is left after the big trade) C: Diop / (Krstic or Boone, whichever is left after the big trade) |
