HCP needs to stop showing that damn "behind the action" shot. I hate it. It's not a good angle, we always miss stuff, and then they have to scramble back to the side shot because the Blazers turn it over and the action is going the other way. Just stop.
Reference to Goodfellas movie, Joe Pesci scene. Despite the pop culture reference I think it is kind of early 20th century racist. Blazer Fanatic obviously does not and thinks it is clever. Not something I would say and I'll say almost anything.
If it has something to do with Blazers broadcasting, it's on HCP. I'm holding him personally responsible.
Racist? An Italian said it to an Italian in the movie, so I can see why someone would find it racist. Shoe shining as a profession is clearly only exclusive to one race , and if you believe that, Go get your shine box! Google, "go get your shine box." The results are fairly clear as to the reference and what it means. There's nothing clever about it. It's from the movie Goodfellas, and it didn't mean anything prior to that. My husband says it to me all the time when I bust his balls, and it's funny, as does John Stewart on the Daily Show when pointing out hypocrisy or someone saying something silly. It's basically a saying to put someone back in their place when they make a smart ass, sarcastic, Mr. know-it-all comment - synonymous with: no shit Sherlock, delicate genius, captain obvious, (and more literal) last I checked you shined shoes for a living. This isn't the "N" word, or even overtly derogatory, it's just sarcastic humor.
HCP looks like the kind of guy that could impose his will on a much smaller man. The side-line cuts of guys dribbling up the floor miss more action than they capture. I agree with Nate - please stop this insanity!
Live action should ALWAYS be shown from the center court camera. Shots from any other camera should be reserved for replays only.
The reference existed long before Goodfellas and is derogatory toward African-Americans. Shoe-shining as a profession in an American historical context is hardly racially equitable. No need to play dumb. We can try flagging it and let the mods decide.
I agree, AND they shouldn't throw up ads or stats while there is action. Leave that shit for halftime!
Exactly. If some action happens on the side, and that angle captures it, sweet replay incoming. But it's a horrible angle otherwise.
Speaking of half time, why do they insist on putting ads over the closest dancer(s) in the shot? I mean, come on now...
When I used to see shoe shine boys in the late 50s and 60s, they were black. Later I learned that it's racist to call a black man a boy. Then the hippie generation got men less worried about shiny shoes and ties, so the trade disappeared.
