It's the greatest film trilogy for a reason! A few years ago our local Alamo Drafthouse was showing Part 1 and I got the wife to go with me, she'd never seen the original and it was good enough to get her to go to Part 2 as well and then they had Part 3 and she decided to just finish the series on the big screen (of course the margaritas helped as well). One and Two are masterpieces, Three is a good flick but just could never live up to the exceptions that got tossed on it. Not having Duval I think really hurt it, along with Sophia as the daughter was just brutal. That said it's become an underrated movie in my book.
Another oldie. Watched Taxi Driver. Controversial casting then 12 year old Jodie Foster as 12 year old prostitute.
Just watched "Young Woman and the Sea" on Disney+ a few days ago. I enjoyed it immensely, but I've always loved the stereotypical underdog-overcoming-adversity sports triumph movie.
Movies we've seen recently ... Maxxxine- was pretty good little suspense/horror flick with 80s feel, right up until the last 15 minutes where things went off the rails. Not bad but not sure I'll ever watch again. 6.7/10 Trap- M. Night knows how to make a badass trailer but his movies just haven't hit consistently. Loved the premise for this one and first 60% is good, the final 40% of the movie things get weird and everyone starts making really bad decisions. 6.2/10 Longlegs- this is one of the more divisive movies of late with Nic Cage playing a very creepy character. Set in Oregon it's another good little suspense movie and this one had me for 90% of the movie until the end, but still an interesting watch 7.9/10 Twisters- I actually liked this one more than the original that I went back and watched before seeing the sequel. It's got some great set pieces (though nothing quite like the drive-in from the OG) and I thought had a better story, plus I find Glen Powell to be very likable in his movies. 7.5/10
Camera - on Amazon about a young boy, his camera and kind old man. Very touching and I give it 5 stars!
Anyone ever seen the movie “City of God” about a kid growing up in the slums of Brazil surrounded by gangs and violence, aspiring to be a photographer. I haven’t watched it recently(I haven’t watched any movies in a long I time), but I do own it, and it’s a great movie. It’s top 100 on imdbs top 250 list. If I haven’t said it already I think the IMDB top 250 is the quintessential “top movies” list. I’ve never seen something on the top 250 I don’t feel is deserving, or at least arguably so. Shawshank Redemption is #1
It's a fun list but Shawshank being #1 is a joke, that said it is a good jumping off point for people looking for the best of the best.
What would you say is the best, and would you put Shawshank in top 5, top 10? For me it is definitely top 5 well written/well produced. FWIW my “favorite” movies wouldn’t necessarily make that list, but some have.
I think Shawshank is a wildly overrated movie personally and it was pushed up by a bunch of people that just wanted to see The Godfather not at number one. As you mentioned, it's so tough because am I ranking the movies I think are the 'best' or the ones I like to rewatch the most or a combo of both. Overall I'd say Shawshank in the combo list is around 30th but that's just me.
Wow. I've never seen a movie I like more than Shawshank. When I think of the best, it always starts with Shawshank.
Saw Kiss of the Spider Woman back in the 80s. Finally on HBO. If you have HBO, watch. If your image of Raul Julia is quirky Gomez Addams, you will see him in quite another light, along with costar William Hurt. And the depiction of Brazilian military distatorship is accurate.
I admit Gump is in the group of Shawshank for me, severely overrated but also understand why people love it. Granted I also was bored to tears by all three Lord of the Rings movies that always are at the top of these lists.
Saw Dune and Dune 2 this month… I liked the first one a lot more than the second one but both were at least really good. That first movie was fantastic.
Sometimes when the world is going to hell in a high speed train, watch a comedy. I rewatched Damn Yankees, don't think I've seen it since high school. Had to laugh at female sports writer on the field with ballplayers in dress, high heels, hat and little white gloves. Always thought she was prettier than vamp Lola.
