    John Wall's three-pointer is game-winner in Washington's 85-83 upset of Boston

"Circumstances were taxing enough for the Washington Wizards, playing their second game in as many nights and third in four days. Then consider that the opponent was reigning Eastern Conference champion Boston, and the degree of difficulty swelled that much more.

Yet in an improbable turn, the Wizards overcame what seemed a blueprint for certain failure by scoring their most consequential victory this season, 85-83, on Saturday night before a sellout crowd of 20,278 at Verizon Center, which at times had the ambience of a Celtics home game.

Prized rookie point guard John Wall provided the winning points with a three-pointer off the glass with 57 seconds left to break a tie at 81. When the ball fell through the netting as the shot clock expired, Wall raised both arms, igniting a raucous ovation after Washington's first and only three-pointer of the game provided the defining moment to date of his brief professional career.

"I didn't call it," Wall said of his unlikely game-winner, which also gave the Wizards their first lead. "I knew it was going to hit backboard, but I thought it was going to be a hard brick. It could have broke the backboard, but luckily it went in for us, and it was a momentum changer."

After Kevin Garnett's layup whittled the margin to one, the Celtics had a chance to go ahead on Paul Pierce's jumper, but his shot rattled off the rim with three seconds to play, and Wall completed the scoring by making 1 of 2 foul shots to end Boston's five-game winning streak and curtail Washington's losing skid at two.

Wall finished with 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists and managed to stay in the game when it mattered most despite five personal fouls. Rashard Lewis, playing with tendinitis in his right knee, had game highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Wizards (13-29), who improved to 13-9 at home and logged their second win of the season against a team with a winning record at the time.

Garnett finished with 17 points for Boston (33-10), which also got 16 points from Ray Allen and 13 points and nine assists from Rajon Rondo, who along with Pierce weathered foul trouble in the second half. Boston shot 43 percent, well below its 50.5 mark coming into the game, and missed 11 of 15 three-pointers. "

Josh Howard to miss one to two weeks with sore left knee

Josh Howard's sore left knee will keep him out one to two weeks after the veteran swingman was evaluated on Monday. Howard had missed the past two games and hasn't played a full game since Dec. 29 against Indiana. He has attempted to play in the first half of losses in Indiana and Philadelphia before being forced to sit out.

As he walked out of Verizon Center on Monday, Howard said he was feeling better after resting the past few days and was leaning more on the shorter end of his estimated break. "Two weeks is the extreme. I hope to be back before that."

Howard is averaging 7.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in eight games with the Wizards. He missed the first 24 games while recovering from a torn left anterior cruciate ligament sustained last February. "He still wasn't a 100 percent, but just having him on the court was a great presence for us, so yeah, that's a tough loss," John Wall said. "Josh came in, played a great role for us, bringing a great defensive intensity. A veteran player, talking to us, helping us out a lot."

Coach Flip Saunders said Howard will be re-evaluated again later this week. Howard's absence has been and will continue to be felt on the defensive end, where the former all-star forward consistently raised the energy level. The Wizards will host the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday.

"We're a lot better. He's a guy that's been an all-star in the league, been to the NBA finals, been in the playoffs a lot. His veteran presence just helps a lot, especially when you have a young point guard, you can help settle him down. But we don't have him," Saunders said. "We were playing so well because it helped us so much defensively, another veteran player who can help us in later game situations. It's another opportunity, Al [Thornton] stepped up last game, played pretty well against Charlotte and it gives guys opportunities."

Thornton had slid far back into the rotation, with Howard's return coinciding with the arrival of Rashard Lewis in the Gilbert Arenas trade. But he will be expected to give the Wizards more games like he did in Charlotte, where he came off the bench, scored 11 points and helped the team take a brief lead in the third quarter.

John Wall makes return after two week absence, but Wizards lose

"There was John Wall, back after missing more than two weeks of action, pulling out a Manu Ginobili move, whirling the ball behind his back and dropping a pretty left-hand layup. Rashard Lewis appeared comfortable in his second game with his new team, providing the perimeter shooting the Washington Wizards had hoped for when they acquired him from the Orlando Magic.

Kirk Hinrich, despite the rainbow-colored shiner beneath his left eye, ran the team well and could hardly miss in the first half. And Hilton Armstrong helped limit Tim Duncan to five points, which used to equate to success against the San Antonio Spurs.

While there were some positives that could be taken from Sunday's game at AT&T Center, the undermanned Wizards couldn't come away with a road victory against the team that holds the league's best record.

With Andray Blatche and JaVale McGee serving a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team, the Wizards lost, 94-80, to the Spurs and extended their franchise record for consecutive road defeats to start the season at 14.

The Wizards have lost 11 straight games in San Antonio, with Lewis the only player on their current roster who was in the NBA on Dec. 11, 1999.

"I can't fault our guys as far as effort," Coach Flip Saunders said. "When you're undermanned like that, you almost have to play perfect basketball."

The Wizards (7-21) will have Blatche and McGee back in uniform on Monday in Houston, where they will attempt to avoid matching the team record of 15 straight road losses in one season. Blatche and McGee issued apologies for getting involved in a scuffle with each other outside a Washington area nightclub last week. The team had initially deemed it "simply a disagreement between teammates" but decided to punish the players after further investigation.

Blatche wrote in a text message: "I'm very sorry for the incident. I had no intention of this ever happening. I apologize for my behavior, to my family, the whole Wizards organization, my fans, my teammates and coaches." McGee expressed a similar sentiment on his Twitter account. "

Devin Harris knew that facing the Washington Wizards, a team without a road victory this season, was the best opportunity for the New Jersey Nets to snap their eight-game losing streak -- and he had to be the one to do something about it.

"This was one we had to have," said Harris, who called a team meeting before the game, then went out and had 29 points and nine assists in the Nets' 97-89 victory Thursday night. "If I'm going to be the guy here, then it's all about being aggressive and making things happen."

Harris connected on 14 of 17 from the free throw line, including six straight over the final 1:30 to help the Nets (7-19) win for the first time in December and send the Wizards (6-18) to their 13th straight road loss.

"The Washington Wizards might finally be inching their way toward more consistency. Not only can they lose control of games on the road, they showed Friday night that they could also do it at home.

After an impressive second quarter let them build a double-digit lead over the New York Knicks, the Wizards came out flat to start the second half. They let a five-point halftime edge vanish in less than two minutes and shot miserably for the duration as a return to their home court failed to prove therapeutic in a 101-95 loss at Verizon Center.

Even with the return of injured starters John Wall and Andray Blatche, the Wizards lost their fourth consecutive game. Wall was a game-time decision after missing the last of the Wizards' three-game road trip out West with a sore left foot. He did not have his typical explosiveness with the ball and looked hesitant on his jump shots, making just 4 of 14 from the field. "

"Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld didn't know what to expect record-wise of the team that he assembled over the summer, but he was hoping that the injection of youth and enthusiasm would yield a scrappy, hard-working unit that competes every night and makes opponents earn whatever victories they get.

So far, the Wizards have offered only glimpses of that team - for quarters, halves, and sometimes, full games - with a run of inconsistency supported by a 6-15 record that includes losses in all 12 road games to start the season, a new franchise record in futility.

With one-fourth of the season complete, Grunfeld is willing to be somewhat patient, since he believes the root of the sporadic play has been an inability to get the desired team on the floor every night because of injuries.

"I wish we would've had all of our players from Day One," Grunfeld said. "We're always going to look for ways to improve this team, but first we also want to see how this group comes together when we have our pieces. It seems like one guy goes down, and when somebody comes back, somebody else comes down. So we didn't have the kind of consistency and continuity that we really wanted."

Grunfeld traveled with the team during its 0-3 road trip through Phoenix, Los Angeles and Sacramento, which saw Coach Flip Saunders use three different starting lineups. Andray Blatche missed the last two games with a hip contusion suffered in Phoenix, while No. 1 overall pick John Wall was sidelined with soreness in his left foot for a deflating 116-91 loss to a woeful Kings team that had lost its previous eight games and had never led by more than 16 points at any time this season.

Blatche and Wall both hope to be back as the Wizards host the New York Knicks on Friday at Verizon Center, where the team has had some success this season. The Wizards are 6-3 at home, which is the fifth-best home winning percentage in the Eastern Conference behind Boston, Chicago, Miami and Orlando. "It is frustrating that we are two different teams," Gilbert Arenas said. "A great team at home and a terrible team on the road. We just have to find a happy medium." "

John Wall recorded his first triple-double in Wednesday's 98-91 win for the Wizards over Houston.

Wall finished with 19 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds, as well as six steals and just one turnover.

"It's fun to watch," Coach Flip Saunders said of his star pupil. "The thing tonight he did is that he did it very much under control. One turnover is impressive, to have as many assists as he had to just one turnover, so it does show you one, his intelligence and how coachable he is."

Toney Douglas and Raymond Felton lack the speed of John Wall or the shooting of Gilbert Arenas.

But on the night the Washington Wizards finally got their guards together, the game belonged to the New York Knicks' duo.

Douglas had 19 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, Felton added 13 points and 10 assists, and the Knicks spoiled Arenas' return to NBA action with a 112-91 victory Friday night.

The Knicks' point guard combo outplayed the more heralded duo of No. 1 draft pick Wall and Arenas, who played in his first regular-season game in 10 months. And the Knicks' guards had much more help up front, with Amare Stoudemire scoring 18 points and Danilo Gallinari chipping in 16.

If there were any Hawks fans still mad at Joe Johnson after last season's playoffs, he took a big step toward patching things up Saturday night.

Johnson scored 14 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter to lead Atlanta to its third straight win, 99-95 over the Washington Wizards in the Hawks' home opener.

Mindful of the booing he faced locally in a four-game sweep by Orlando last spring, Johnson went out of his way to praise the sellout crowd of 18,729.

"It's great to see everybody come out and show their support," Johnson said. "We really appreciate that."

Against the Magic, Johnson had a miserable series and ticked off Atlanta fans when he said after a Game 3 blowout that he didn't care if they "showed up or not." They did for the finale, booing Johnson all night in another lopsided loss.

    The warmup acts are over.

A perfect preseason? Gone. An opening-night blowout? Forgotten. For the Orlando Magic, LeBron James and the new-look Miami Heat await.

Dwight Howard had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lift the Magic to an easy 112-83 victory over the Washington Wizards in the debut of No. 1 pick John Wall on Thursday night, giving the NBA's newest arena a grand opening and setting the stage for a sizzling Sunshine State series showdown.

After months of talk, Superman and all his sidekicks finally have a chance to make a real statement.
