He can change his number to whatever he wants, he can be #99 to be higher than jordan but thats all he will be is a higher jersey number. He does not rank anywhere near jordans greatness.

The reason he is changing his number is because it was his first high school number or something. Eventually it became #33 because it was one of his dads numbers. (Either hs or NBA).

I heard he was changing to 33 because that was his high school number. but the marketability of the number 8 with the lakers colours is huge! it would ruin everything they built that number on.

His jersey number should be 81 !

Okay, he shouldn't change it. 8 fits him very much and it sells. Like he said when he was younger, he wants that people will forget number 23 and start loveing number 8 !

Yeah, 8 is the perfect fit for Kobe. We've come to love him and hate him in that number, and for it to change, well, that would simply look awkward. And when you think about the number 8, does anyone else come to mind?

    Didn't think so.

Kobe's changing his number, because if he changes numbers everyone will want the new number and he will be top selling jersey again.

I call him that because of the awkward tip-toe way he runs. It looks cartoonish to me.

And the fact that he is entirely and completely overshadowed by Kobe doesn't help, either.

Apparently... (I don't know how much of this is true) part of the reason he's changing it is for marketing. Adidas is re-running the old Kobe sneakers calling them "crazy-8's" or something like that .. It more or less allows them to make money off of Kobe without them having to pay him endorsement money. So once Kobe changes his number the connection with 8 is no longer there and it prevents people who want Kobe sneakers from associating what adidas is offering with him ... so Nike makes more money in the end, therefore Kobe makes more money.

I saw this reported somewhere but I don’t have a source unfortunately.

^^That is a very interesting theory, but why would Kobe change his number just to accomodate them? A lot of players hold their numbers sacred, and besides why would he not want to make money off of his old shoes?
