Eventually it became #33 because it was one of his dads numbers. (Either hs or NBA).

I heard he was changing to 33 because that was his high school number. but the marketability of the number 8 with the lakers colours is huge! it would ruin everything they built that number on.

Apparently... (I don't know how much of this is true) part of the reason he's changing it is for marketing. Adidas is re-running the old Kobe sneakers calling them "crazy-8's" or something like that .. It more or less allows them to make money off of Kobe without them having to pay him endorsement money. So once Kobe changes his number the connection with 8 is no longer there and it prevents people who want Kobe sneakers from associating what adidas is offering with him ... so Nike makes more money in the end, therefore Kobe makes more money. I saw this reported somewhere but I don’t have a source unfortunately.
^^That is a very interesting theory, but why would Kobe change his number just to accomodate them? A lot of players hold their numbers sacred, and besides why would he not want to make money off of his old shoes?
