I was still wondering how we will give up Swift and Gay with only Battier in return. Swift and Battier's contract are almost identical with only $7000. difference in their 2006-2007 season salary. Looks like we're giving Gay to the Grizzlies for free. Anyway the propose trade won't be finalized until july 12. We should supposed to get another player.
I don't see the logic in this trade. We just gave up young 2 athletic PF's for a slower less athletic player that's getting old. This is very risky and i seriously doubt we're even half way into solving our problems. I was hoping for somebody who was at least around 27 who was more athletic and proven. The way i see it this trade could go 50/50 and either be a blessing in disguise or one of the biggest mistakes we've made ever. One way or another i don't think Shane is worth that much and we've been ripped off.
so i was reading we got Gay and traded him and was pretty pissed and then people said battier is byc and i was thinking arent they like impossible to trade so i went and tried trading swift and Gay for Battier and i get Houston Trade Breakdown Outgoing Rudy Gay 0-0 from No games yet played in 2005/06 Stromile Swift 6-9 PF from Louisiana State 8.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 0.4 apg in 20.4 minutes Incoming Shane Battier 6-8 SF from Duke 10.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.7 apg in 35.1 minutes Change in team outlook: +1.2 ppg, +0.9 rpg, and +1.3 apg. Memphis Trade Breakdown Outgoing Shane Battier 6-8 SF from Duke 10.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.7 apg in 35.1 minutes Incoming Rudy Gay 0-0 from No games yet played in 2005/06 Stromile Swift 6-9 PF from Louisiana State 8.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 0.4 apg in 20.4 minutes Change in team outlook: -1.2 ppg, -0.9 rpg, and -1.3 apg. Failed Scenario There were BYC players involved in this trade, so this trade is subject to the BYC provisions of the CBA. Due to Houston and Memphis being over the cap, the 25% trade rule is invoked. Houston and Memphis had to be no more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did not happen here (only Houston met the condition). This trade does not satisfy the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. so whats the deal?? is there somethin I'm missing is that why we have to wait till july 12th? I hope this deal is either wrong or just doesn't happen.
McGrady was selected ninth overall in the 1997 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors. Chicago Bulls GM Jerry Krause had arranged a draft-day trade to send Scottie Pippen to Toronto for the 9th overall pick, which he would have used to take McGrady. Krause decided not to make the deal when Michael Jordan threatened to retire if it was made. -wikipedia I'm not kidding. T-mac and Yao should definitely do this.
We have the Vets Min 5 Million MLE (up to two players) Thats it! PG-Alston SG-TMacLuther SF-BattierNovak PF-HowardHayes C-Yao (Mutumbo may be to old) We have no depth. We can't waste all of our mle on one player(even though we are 2mil under the salary cap). We will need new PF and a backup PG.
To be fair, Gay COULD be a much better player than Battier and COULD become a superstar, but with his attitude problems and propensity to disappear in games, he COULD become another Stromile Swift. Then again, I've learned that history shows - anyone who makes a deal with Jerry West usually gets screwed over in the long run... That Jerry West is a smart, smart man. Think Vlade Divac for Kobe Bryant. Anyways, this could be part of a better deal that will net Gerald Green as well - as young and athletic as Gay... and if that happens it would look like a Green for Gay swap and a Battier for Swift swap, which doesn't sound too bad after all.
The Sixers and Celtics are looking for a 3rd or perhaps 4th team to participate in a trade that would send Iverson to the Celtics. Memphis and Houston could be those teams? I dunno, someone reported it in the other thread, not sure how true it is, but Green is from Houston and Morey helped pick him in Boston and Morey also has ties to Ainge. What could happen is the Rockets trade Swift for Battier straight up, then Swift and Eddie Jones are shipped to Philly (Philly clears cap room next summer with EJ's expiring contract), Philly sends Iverson to Boston (along with salaries to make the deal work), and Boston ships Wally Szczerbiak to Memphis (to play Battier's role) along with pieces to make salaries work (perhaps Ratliff, as Iverson makes ~18 million), including Gerald Green who is sent to Houston for Rudy Gay to complete the trade. Here are the numbers: Swift -> Battier Almost the same salary as previously discussed. You can be sure Memphis doesn't want Stro back which makes you sort of wonder? Swift and EJ + some young player(s) or future draft picks = 5.4 + 15.6 + ? = 21 million + ? The Sixers will get to dump salary in an attempt to reload their roster Iverson + trade filler = 18 million + 3-4? million (perhaps Kevin Ollie who makes that much) The Celtics get AI who they've been trying to get all offseason. Ratliff + Szczerbiak + Green = 11.6 + 10 + 1.3 = 22.9 million The Grizz get the defensive C they've needed for a while now to compliment Gasol, scoring on the wing in Wally, and Green to satisfy Houston's part of the deal. The numbers are close enough that it's concievable.
I know why the Rockets are doing this, to reveal lots of cap room, to sign another big free agent! I mean thats the only reason they decided to give away swift in this deal, they will maybe trade howard for another good role player and we are set for this. The Rockets want a championship NOW! PG-Rafer Alston/Sura SG-Shane Battier/Luther Head SF-T-mac/Novak PF-Free Agent/ Chuck Hayes C-Yao Ming/ Dikembe Mutombo. Add a nice clean player at the PF spot and we are ready to blast off.
The Rockets might get another player in this Gay and Swift for Battier trade simply because Swift and Battier has an identical salary for season 06-07. What about the value of Gay's rookie contract? In accordance to the CBA it won't satisfy the trade unless it matches fairly in monetary amount. I just hope the rumors of a 4 team trade which tmacgarnett has posted on the other thread in which the Rockets will end up acquiring Battier and Gerald Green is true. In this way giving up Rudy Gay and Swift would be justified. The Rockets will just have to worry about getting a PF and a backup PG in free agency.
Blueracer, I agree with you. But a backup PG is something we dont need unless we are getting rid of Bob Sura and if this dude is healthy, I think him and Howard can be veteran trade bait. But if we get the PG we need to play behind Rafer, and the Power Forward we are hoping for, then I think we are ready, but as much as I want Drew Gooden, and Swift/Howard out. But I don't think Gooden will fit in Van Gundy's system but think of the team on paper. PG-Rafer Alston SG-Shane Battier SF-Tracy McGrady PF-Drew Gooden C-Yao Ming
don't forget the Rockets still have a couple Trade Exceptions, which might interest a few teams and could make trade possibilities like the one outlined above work.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting tinyballer:</div><div class="quote_post">Actually after Locke talked some sense into me and calmed me down this trade doesn't look as bad as it once did. Thought it still looks bad. We get our conveted SG who can hustle defend and knock down his shots basically the new old david wesley. I would still prefer Rudy Gay and see if its a home run or a 20 pt scorer type of thing but this gives us our shooting guard but if we can't get our pf situation fixed before next season we still can't win with this team. We need a playoff caliber pf and right now we definetly don't have that. Plus one other reason i am not so sure about Shane Battier is his playoff numbers sucks 6 points .286 3pt but 6 rebounds.</div> David Wesley?????????????????
I don't think w/ Battier we're contenders in the west finals... so let's hope someone else will be brought in.
I am talkin about the david wesley that just arrived in houston from a trade of jim jackson and boki nachbar. He was knocking down all his 3pt shots he was hustling he was outworking the guy he was guardin to contain him. Thats what we got in battier except he is 6'6"
This thread is hilarious. I love it... the Grizzlies trade away the heart and soul of their entire team... arguably their best player... and all they get in return is an unmotivated, poor ball handling rookie... and people in the Rockets forum act like they're getting ripped off... haha... To add to it all, the Grizzlies have to take on Stromile Swift,... perhaps the worst player in the NBA? Perhaps... Anyway, I'm not going to try too hard to talk some sense into you kids... every time I do, I just get outnumbered... and then when I turn out being right, no one accepts that they were wrong... (ie: Rockets signing Swift in Free Agency, Rockets not making the playoffs, etc.)... I also love how this time of year everyone is an expert on the draft... I never saw any of you guys posting in the college forum this year... what do you all know about Rudy Gay? Please... you're all reactionary posters... you have no idea about Gay's game, but you hear some analyst call him a potential All-Star and all of a sudden that's your opinion... Signing off and winding down...
WOW I don't know all the particulars but great move. Shane - most underrated player in the league, Memphis fans will tell you. PROVEN NBA Player Perimeter Defender and near 40% 3pt shooter. He's averaging the same numbers as Stro, with better defense, descision making Rebounding, ball handling and better in every other basketball category. Getting rid of Stro is priceless, and giving him back to the team that didn't want him, even better. He is the most overrated example to kids that measurement and athletiscism isn't everything. Great to see his contract go. Only J.Howard's would have better to see go. Gay- It was the right pick. I can't even express remorse for losing him becuase it was right away. He would have been great for the future. I don't know how reliable he could have been expected to be late this year. He's young and relying on him to be a third scorer this year might have been a mistake. With Shane Rockets know what to expect night in and night out. Gay Deke Head that would have been funny to hear somebody say on the air. Be mad for now, and when the season starts you will love Shane. The other pick is Matt Bullard or Scott Padgett. play 10 min and be expected to hit 2 of 3 3Pt shots every night. Tall Shoots from 3 so running defenders won't bother his shot, and will make teams pay for leaving him open Rockets got 2 shooters. 1 perimeter defender. I hope they Land Deshawn Stevenson and bring over Vspan. I expect to see more trades. PF becomes the Weakness. Skip Sura VSpan TMac Stevenson Head Shane Novak Howard Hayes Yao Deke
