I think they should have MVP awards for each position, but that's just me. I guess that would be All-NBA first team.

Don't really agree, seeing as how PG's rarely win the MVP award. Nash got it 2 years ago because he lead the team to a 30+ game win improvement. He got it this past season because people thought the Suns were going to stumble without Amare, but he still lead them to 50+ wins and a division title.

I've stopped thinking that Kobe will get his MVP. I kinda just assume Lebron will start his reign of getting it every year... it blows, but that's what I see happening...

Someone still mad that Kobe couldn't help the Lakers from choking a 3-1 lead?

Being the MVP isn't something you set out to do.

Virtually every player in the past won the award because they did what their team needed from them in order to win.

You can say that. We're not use to choking. Just ask Caramelo or the entire Raptors team.

I agree with this assessment. I don't care what anyone says about the Pheonix offense, no one else in this league could have initiated it better then Nash. Kidd is not half of the shooter that Nash is, although he is a better defender. Phx's system insists offense over defense, thus the need for a true point guard who has exceptional passing skills, can shoot the lights out and penetrate if necessary. Cue Steve Nash.

Off the top of my head, I'm thinking of PG's who people say can do a better job then Steve Nash in the Pheonix system. Marbury? Please, that guy wouldn't pass even in a system like this, he'd just end up jacking shots to boost his own stats. Only pure point guards would thrive in this system. Kidd? Close, because he can run a high-tempo offense, but he really doesn't have the shooting touch of Nash. Furthermore, in reference to last year's series with Dallas, could Kidd have dropped 48 points in a crucial game in the 2nd round of the playoffs and willed his team to victory when they needed SCORING? Tony Parker? Yeah he's quick, but he's not as good as a passer Nash, nor is he as good of a shooter. Mike James? TJ Ford? [IMG]

I can't see any point guard in the league who could have duplicated what Nash brings to the table for Phoenix. However, it can be argued that if someone like Lebron James or even Kevin Garnett, or even Shaq were on this Lakers team (in place of Kobe), they could have made it to the 7th seed just like Kobe did as well.

By your definition of MVP, Kobe Bryant should have been the concensus pick as MVP. No other player in the league shouldered the offensive and defensive responsibilities of Kobe Bryant last season. The MVP is an individual award, no other individual dominated the league more than Kobe last season on both ends of the court.

Just to add to your definition, I think the MVP should have a defining moment in the season and Kobe accomplished this with his 81 point performance.

With inept teammates for 75% of the season, Kobe Bryant was the number one option on offense and the number one option on defense for the Lakers. He succeeded at both, claiming the scoring title and also making the All-NBA 1st Defensive Team.

Junoon - Steve Nash is the ideal PG for the Suns offense, but I don't think it's relevent to the league MVP. He's undoubtly the MVP of the Phoenix Suns, but I cannot fathom how Steve Nash the player, not the Phoenix Suns, had a better season than Kobe Bryant.

If number of wins is considered, than how can one vote Nash over Dirk Nowitzki? The Mavericks won more games, and their system doesn't work without Dirk in the lineup.

I agree with this, as it's been the working definition of the MVP award for the last several years. My problem is that when people complain about last year's MVP winner, they almost tend to support Kobe as the more deserving winner. Dirk was a the most deserving candidate and was certainly more deserving than Kobe.

shape heres my imput on this

kobe will not win mvp of the regular season unless he leads his team to a record breaking season, you think leading the league in scoring averging 35 5 and 4 and scoring 81 points in a game and 69 points in 3 quarters would get him it but he came in 4th i believe in it. its hard to imagine he would ever top those numbers and even if he does some how he will get snubbed

Which goes back to my original post, stating the MVP award is determined by popularity over substance.

Chutney - It really depends on a person's definition of the MVP. People supporting Kobe have a valid argument as well. Their basic argument is, Kobe didn't have the supporting cast last season to win the magical 50 games. The Lakers did manage to win 11 more games than the previous year and made it back to the post-season.

Yes but certain players from different positions could have lead the Suns to that many wins, in an altered fashion.

Shaq? No... You're stuck a couple years in the past. LeBron and KG are great, but would not have gotten the Lakers a 7th seed, due to Kobe being the best two way player in the game.

Championships/Choking falls upon the skills of an entire team.

Then they should be arguing against the way the MVP is awarded, because this isn't exactly a new development. If you take the current way MVP's are handed out (with an emphasis on team success), Dirk Nowitzki was the best choice. Steve Nash shouldn't have won, but under that format, he was a better choice than Kobe. Now, if you were to argue that this format doesn't make sense, then I could understand you justifying Kobe's selection. But, nobody seems to do that.

The playoffs have nothing to do with the MVP. If this is your argument then Nash letting his team lose to the Mavericks in 6 games should rule him out as an MVP canidate.

Getting back to your point Bobcats, you either didn't watch the Suns series or were being sarcastic with your reply. If you saw the playoffs you damn well Kobe did everything possible to put his team in a position to win the series. It's not his fault when Kwame misses from point blank, and his team can't secure a defensive rebound.

I really dont understand how people come up with the notion that one player made his team collapse from a 3-1 lead. When the TEAM played well they won, when they played poorly they lost. If you payed close attention, the Laker team was playing well and that forced the Suns to the brink.. Not Kobe all alone.
