It took me two years to get into Sigur R?s' music, strangely. My fianc?e is the one who got me into them, but at first I didn't really understand it. Then when you sit down and just listen you really hear what the music is about.

Simply, art.

Awesome video and a nice easygoing track. Simple and unique; there's nothing else I can really write to explain it. Great one, Sasha.

New song is from a band you enjoyed a while back. I finally found a video of their's. I'm sure you'll want to make your own grade on this one.

Amazing is too small of a word to portray this. Great stuff once again. I love it from beginning to end. Here's mine...

Mogwai -- Christmas Steps

Mogwai - Christmas Steps A+

I had to grade this one. Mogwai always do spectacular stuff, they remind me a bit of Godspeed you! Black Emperor. They did the entire album for the Zinedine Zidane film that was released, which was really cool.

This song, like GY!BE tend to start off, comes into focus with a low tone drifting you into another realm before it takes off and you feel like you're somewhere else. You get caught in the song unlike any other type of music can produce. Then it ends in perfect fashion. Otherwordly music is always the best IMO, which is why I love bands like Sigur R?s, GY!BE, and Mogwai.

New song is from GY!BE. I posted this in another thread, but I suppose it suits better for the music section even though it is a rather political video.

This thread hasn't been posted in since yesterday morning, I don't think anybody wants to rate that video. Let me post an all time favorite (probably of most members on this board) so they can choose which one to rate, or they can rate both.

My favorite GY!BE song! All their stuff is political just about and that's why I love it. Well that, and the little known fact that they arrange some of the most beautiful music ever to be recorded. Good pick! Here's my next one...

If you haven't noticed, it's been you two back and forth for awhile now.

If you're sick of it, respond, and say what you think of it and then proceed with your recommendation. It's how the thread works, genius. Don't be ignorant.

Not to disrupt the flow again here people, but lets stay calm. We don't need a flame war to erupt from a couple simple comments.

There is no need to to be ignorant, especially considering your position on these forums. Aside from you, VC, rafy, Sasha, Mag and myself there really aren't any other contributers to this thread since everyone else has stopped.

Also, I don't think any anyone except you seems to really have a problem with the rest of the contributers actually going by the point of the thread and recommending new music. Time to realize that not everyone is going to like your taste in music. I understand that and I'm sure Sasha does too. For instance I don't care for Tori Amos, but the song was good that Sasha posted so I put my honest opinion.

Put down your opinion, explain yourself, don't just insult something you don't understand or care to learn more about. Music is more then fame or catchy tunes to some people, bro.

Also ..

GY!BE are from Canada.

Persephone's Bees are based in Oakland.

How about we just continue the thread now without the need for a flame war?

Sasha - I've never heard of Mahavishnu Orchestra, but they seem to be pretty good. I'll leave the song rate to someone else, but thanks for the recommendation. I'll have to look into them more over the coming week

The start as absolutely dreadful. The guy talking sounded like a complete no offense. And the start of the song just sounded like a bunch of noises. But then I really got into it. Billy Cobham is just an AMAZING drummer. Overall they're really good at what they do. Aside from the start of the song, I loved everything besides the video. It reminds of those nasty lava lamps, and 70's hippies in general.

Heh. I know. I also thought about "Fallen Angel" too since that video is hilarious when Garvey keeps plotting to kill off the other band members and then Boom! lol

Good People - B+ - Someone (I forget who) posted a version of this song on JBB a while back with a hilarious video satarizing American government and popular culture. The lyrics of the song are great as always from Jack too.

I love the array of instruments used, especially the flute and the saxophone (?). The vocals were good, but the instruments swept me away.

RHCP - Venice Queen
Invalid Video Link

I love the studio version, as the wind effect at the beginning really draws you in, but I also like this live version.

A+++

I've always thought this could be the greatest song of all-time (in my severely slanted, RHCP-loving opinion). I really think that Frusciante should retake control of the production, because Stadium Arcadium was less creative, had way more of a 'mass appeal' sound, and was just overall less inspired than By The Way without his direction. This is vintage RHCP though.

Mediocre. Van Morrison has done stuff a lot better than this.
AND NOW....
INTERPOL!!!

Interpol - Evil - B+

One of their better songs. Sometimes their lyrics can be really cheesy, but I feel this one is well written in both words and music. The video itself is well done and unique. I liked Interpol's first album more then Antics as a whole though, it was a big inspiration to indie musicians because it reached new limits. Their new stuff was a bit shadowed because it sounds exactly the same as the first album, I was a bit crushed. Kind of how I felt after Coldplay released their last album. Never-the-less this is a great track.

On a personal level I'm on bad terms with the band. My fianc?e met them in 2001 just before we started dating and one of them tried to slip her a drug in her drink. That's really disgusting.

Anyway, Interpol remind me of Cities, only Cities have a bit more of an aggressive style to their music. Their guitar work is stellar, you can never really tell what they're going to do next so I'm going to recommend them. Click the name below to follow the link and listen to the track I listed to rate. You'll notice the chorus is only used at the beginning and end, unknown in almost any style of music these days.

Cities - Writing on the Wall

I actually liked the song a lot, the music was beautiful, a little loud for the vocals, but awesome song.

Josh Nowlan is considered to have the third greatest Falsetto of singers in North America. I think that's pretty stellar!

Rage Against the Machine - Testify - B

Had to rate RATM. Good song, even better music video and point made. I just could never stand their singer's voice, but his lyrics and presence on stage are always appreciated. The music is typical Rage style, but you can't help to just get into it because they do such a good job at making aggressive music without the need for excessive swearing or ignorance. Really is a shame they're not together anymore.

Next up I'm putting out my favorite and most inspirational band, Venus. Every album they make is entirely different then the last and they do such a good job of splitting their style between aggressive and passive. Sometimes more orchestrated, cult, or just a rockin' feel to the song. This is the only video from their current album, not my favorite song by far, but it is stellar. Violin work all around. Shame they won't come to the US because of their record company.

Good stuff. I really liked the lyrics. Also, the chick in the video is gorgeous. Here's mine from the best album of 2006:

I'm sorry, I usually like your rec's, but I grew out of metal a while ago.

C-

The entire genre is just kind of boring. Old school used to be decent, but the new stuff is just...Well everything sounds the same, and it usually goes like this; heavy guitar work, incoherent screaming, more heavy guitar work, more incoherent screaming, unspectacular finish. And it just ruins everything about the genre.

Yeah seriously. People that would do that are sick *****. She said they tried to get her in bed the entire night, but she found it hilarious because they seemed so desperate. The drink issue was where she called it a night and left with her friends.

What does Van Morrison have to do with it?

The Same Deep Water As You - C+

It was hard for me to objectively rate this song, because I personally can't stand The Cure and just all 80's post-punk in general, but I've got to acknolwedge their influence on the post-punk scene, and this song was actually easy to listen to, even for a cure-hater like myself. The lyrics, albeit dark, were strangely poetic.

The music had a very middle eastern feel to it, at least to me. That really attracted me to the song, and it finished strong.
