Not shedding any tears that he fired Fegan. Looks like that's at least two cases (the other being Yi) where Fegan's hardball tactics have backfired.
I agree, Fegan was the main cause of Murphy and Dunleavy being so overpaid. I don't have a problem with hardball tactics like Scott Boras, but the difference between Boras and Fegan is that Boras researches and selects premier players who are worth the money. Fegan takes any player he can get and plays to milk every last drop for every single client, backfiring for his midrange clients, and thus has lost a lot of respect around the league. No monetary reports on the deal, but since it's a weekend it's probably not finalized, I'm guessing about $4 million for one year though.
Its official, 1 year 3 million. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Don't feel bad for forward Matt Barnes. Sure, he didn't get the long-term deal he wanted. But his salary for the 2007-08 season will be much more than the $744,551 he made last season, and he's officially no longer a journeyman. The Warriors signed Barnes to a one-year deal worth $3 million. "This is my fifth year in the league," Barnes said Sunday, "and for the first time, I'm going into a season and I don't have to fight for a roster spot."</div> Full Article Great job by Mullin IMO. In that article they reference some of the deals other FA swingmen got like Kapono and Morris Peterson, not to mention guys like Luke Walton, Matt Carroll, Fisher, etc.
Wow, thank goodness we didn't overpay for another role playing guy. That's what got us in trouble in the first place!
Good job Mullin. Barnes will be a good back-up, but I doubt he'll earn anything more next off-season. This is Mullin's way of saying "okay, we'll give you a chance -- prove last season was not a fluke." Then next year, they can re-evaluate another possible deal...
Nice signing..I would have been fine with 2 or even 3 years at that number, but maybe Barnes wants to be free to test the waters again next year. edit: now hopefully we can turn re-signed pietrus and cabbage into another nice asset. BTW someone mentioned in another thread that in a sign-and-trade situation, no other players (from the w's in this case) can be added to the deal. Can anyone confirm/deny that?
Do you think that Barnes will become the starter and Ellis will be mainly the backup PG/SG? Right now with Azubuike, Marco, Jackson, and Barnes, the 2/3 is filled up, with players like Harrington and Croshere being able to fill in the 3 as well. Then again, maybe Pierce or Bailey come away impressive to get that spot of back up PG.
I dont think Barnes should start mainly because he can provide energy off the bench. The ideal lineup for me would be Baron Monta Jax Al Biens off the bench could be Barnes Marco Wright Pietrus (if resigned) Buike Then again this starting lineup would be crushed on the boards as usual but would be able to run people out of the gym
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The San Francisco Chronicle reported Monday on its web site that the Warriors agreed to terms with Barnes on a one-year contract worth $3.5 million. </div> Good value for Matt Barnes, and you have to really love the fact the Warriors didn't lock him in for the long term. Until Nellie's contract situation and position as head coach is secured, the Warriors need to take extra precaution on the role players they want to keep. Barnes exceeded expectations in Nellie's system, but he looked awful when other teams could slow down the tempo.
Mullin played this one perfectly, and the luck was on our side as well. In order to resign both Biedrins and Monta, we were in position to save as many rooms as possible. However, we also have this season to take care of, and the only leverage we have is one year offer. Fortunately for us, Barnes didn't get a long term contract he would like to receive, and he will probably try to duplicate this year's success by signing one year deal under Nelson's system. I am very happy to see Warriors keeping Barnes, and Mullin didn't give him 40 mils/5 years. But, I am also bit concerned that players like Barnes or Pietrus are not getting a deal they would like to see, because other teams believed that those number are inflated. Have they gotten good deals, other good players might have come to us for one year to inflated their stats. But, I guess other teams don't buy into one year success...
I think i have been rather subtle in my feelings towards Barnsey Fife. But now that it is a done deal, i will say this. well done Mullin. A little more than i would have offered, but good enough. I love the one year deal, making him earn it and work for it. And if last season proves to be a fluke he is now an expiring contract we can use come the trade dead line if needed. So, hopefully Pietrus takes the qualifying offer giving us 2 players that sort of get the Nellie system and yet could be expiring trade pieces in the future. Alley i won't say a negative thing about Barnes til game one when i see him softly grab a guy going to the hole and gives him that "and one". I promise. Then all bets are off, for now he is a Warrior
This is a good signing because it's at a good price and for one year. I was thinking Nellie played an 8-man rotation at the end of last year and during the POs, so Barnes will be in there. Potential starters: Baron Monta, Marco SJax AL AB First off the bench: MP (if he re-signs) Barnes Cro Limited action: Azubuike Wright Perovic Benchwarmers: Foyle POB Cabbages Tough cuts unless opening made: Powell Lasme Pierce Bailey
http://www.nba.com/warriors/news/Warriors_...att_Barnes.html One good thing about Barnes is that when he is playing within the context of team ball, he is a decent assist guy and ballhandler. He's really improved on his shot too.
