<div class="quote_poster">MrJ Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">How is he overrated. No one ever suggested he's a superstar. He's only the only NBA player who comes off the bench and averages a double-double. And no one overrates Nate Robinson. At least not here. You must be talking about other internet forums. Point is, all fans, especially from forums dedicated to their teams, tend to overrate their players.</div> Wow, you guys are misunderstanding what I'm sayin. I started a thread about overrated NORMAL players over the internet. Not superstars and it got moved here for some reason. I know no ones suggesting Nate Robinson,Trevor Ariza,David Lee are Superstars but a lot of people overhype players like those three and assume there gonna be all-stars one day. And why look at other forums for nate robinson being overated? Just look at the home page off JBB and he's in the graphic...All he's ever done is win a rigged dunk contest and start physical confrontations with his mouth.
I don't think Nate Robinson has done enough to be considered overrated. His basketball abilities aren't really known. All I remember of him are botching multiple dunk attempts in the dunk contest, making himself look like a fool in the Knicks-Nuggets fight, and blocking Yao Ming's shot.
Nate Robinson is on the main banner because the designer was a fan, not because we think that he's a star caliber player. I'd have to side with Karma in this one, in that Nate Robinson, as a basketball player, is actually underrated. People never talk about anything he can do on the court. All you ever hear them talk about is his dunking, the fight he got in, his attitude, or his stature. As far as players who are overrated, Andrew Bynum is #1 on my list. Not only did the Nets overrate him so much that they offered Jason Kidd for him, but the Lakers actually tuned that down. I don't care how young he is, he hasn't proven anything or been more productive than other young big men like Andrew Bogut or Al Jefferson. I see him in the same class as players like Andray Blatche, Amir Johnson, Robert Swift, Johan Petro, etc. If anyone wants to argue that though, I just had a huge argument on the topic somewhere in the Lakers forum, so bring it there. For the sake of time, I don't want to repeat everything I just said. Also, to address this before it actually comes up, I know someone will say Kobe, just out of spite, jealousy, or whatever, but he really doesn't belong in this conversation. If anything, he's underrated. He should have at least won one of the last two MVP trophies, but the media puts far too much emphasis on team success. It's not so much an individualistic award anymore as it is an award for the best player on the best team. As for other players who are overrated, for a while there Stromile Swift was incredibly overrated, especially by Houston fans the summer they acquired him, but the buzz surrounding him has sort of died down since. Most people realize that although he's got freak talents, he's never going to put it all together and be a consistently great player, because he lacks the drive and the work ethic that great players need to have. Rounding out my list of overrated players (off the top of my head), I think I'd throw in Tyrus Thomas, Joakim Noah, Hakim Warrick, Steve Francis, Mike James, Chucky Atkins, Tarence Kinsey, Damon Stoudamire, Troy Murphy, and a lot of the Pistons, who are given far too much credit on the defensive end (not talking about the team as a whole, but rather a handful of individuals on their roster).

And the banner on the front page means nothing. Shaun Livingston is also on it.
Have to agree with the mention of Nowitzki. Can't believe he won MVP as basically a scoring specialist. He doesn't make his teammates better at all, still the worst defense of any starting PF (except maybe Randolph and Murphy who are at least better rebounders). Great scorer, though he got completely punked in the playoffs when his team needed him. Devin Harris is also extremely overrated. His defense is horrible when refs aren't calling his flops. He doesn't do anything well on offense. Hes basically a 6'3 Ginobili without a jumpshot. Also agree with VC that the Pistons have some players who are overrated on defense. Billups, McDyess, Hamilton, etc. these guys are all average defenders, not bad but nothing special at all yet for some reason people think they're lock down defenders. They looked a lot better with the Wallace's in the paint behind them. Also Gilbert Arenas and Carmelo Anthony for many of the same reasons as Dirk. Both great scorers but literally do nothing else to help their team win. They don't make teammates better, don't play defense, turn the ball over a lot, neither are exceptional rebounders for their positions. You can throw Ben Gordon in this group as well. Lamar Odom as well. I guess he is actually a good fit on the Lakers but hes worth crap to every other team in the league.
^ I thought Carmelo did a good job of playing a more all around role this season. He averaged 6 RPG and 4 APG to go along with 29 PPG. He's not going to be like LeBron and average 8 RPG/8 APG, but he'll be good for about 6.5-7 RPG/5-5.5 APG/ which is good for the SF position.
Greg Oden, hands down the most overrated player of all time, he is talked up by so many people to be the next tim duncan or some crap like that. the guy has never even played a game in the nba and he is mentioned as a top center! that is overrated! lebron is overrated, kobe is overrated, dirk is the worst overated player in history. but none of them are more overrated than oden.

Simply put, if you think he's overrated, you've never seen him play. It's as simple as that. And why the hell are you penalizing him for having not played any games yet? Everyone starts somewhere. Don't you remember all the hype around LeBron James a few years back? What about when Duncan was drafted back in '97? Hell, even Kwame Brown had a lot of hype surrounding him. Every top pick gets a lot of media attention, and (more often than not, those top picks wind up being complete superstars on the NBA level).

The mavs came out of the very strong west only to lose to the heat. Dirk didn't and doesn't act like the superstar he is claimed to be or the MVP of the league.
Oden is overrated. I don't want to start a big argument, because time will tell. I dont think his rookie stat line will be higher than: 9ppg 5rpg .7bpg
You really think Greg Oden averaged 5.0 rpg and 0.7 bpg this season? What, are they only going to give him 10 mpg as well?
<div class="quote_poster">igotask8board Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Oden is overrated. I don't want to start a big argument, because time will tell. I dont think his rookie stat line will be higher than: 9ppg 5rpg .7bpg</div> AAHAHA 9PPG? 5 RPG?? Are you new? He will play almost 35-40 minutes per if he can keep out of foul trouble. Next .7BPG? I think Brandon Roy averaged more then that, c'mon man, he will have at least 2-3 blocks per, maybe even more.
I don't think Oden will play more than 35 minutes. He was foul-prone in college and the NBA, with all the ticky-tack fouls called, will be worse for him. I would say he plays 30 MPG and averages around 12/9 1.7 blocks. While we're on the subject I say Durant puts up 16 PPG, 5 RPG.
Some guy just said that Kobe is overrated, how the hell?!? He's never been a MVP (Which he should be), i didn't see any hype surrounding him when he made history TWICE. Once scoring 81 points and the other season scoring 4 (or five) straight games over 50+ points. No'one can do this in today's game, we won't see new Bryant for about 15 years at least i say. Imagine all the hype if LeBron would done all the things that Kobe has done. But what really sucks is that people start to hate players, not people who hype them so they think LeBron is a overrated ***, he might be a great person who (maybe) realizes that he's a lil'bit overrated. Don't blame him!

I have to agree with Voodoochild with the players he's mentioned. I also think a future player this year that will be overrated as a rookie will be Greg Oden. Unless a point guard can make the big guy's offense go, he's got to control the tempo individually with his defense. That will be hard when everybody in the league that can score is another college or country's best player and has more experience playing the nba type of game. What happens if Greg Oden fouls early or fouls out of the game? One can't really collect 10/10 consistently if that happens. Greg Oden might possibly be overrated like the ranks of other big men coming after Shaq because nobody can compare to Shaq and the league is looking for the next Shaq. They're trying to do it with Yao, Dwight Howard, Andrew Bogut (Tim Duncan comparrisons) and nobody comes close to the top two best big men in the league.
