Anyone got a favourite whiskey cocktail? I'm going drinking tomorrow after class and I'd like to play the sophicated older guy role rather than beer toting jock.
I've gone on a few sites but most of the cocktails look really girlie. Has anyone seen those CC print ads about our fathers? Well that's what inspired me.
Am I best off going with a double of scotch on the rocks?
suggestions?

Rye and ginger is my drink of choice. The more ice the better. I can seriously drink five or six of those without taking a breath if it's that kind of night.
If you like vodka, tequila, and a bit of Irish cream or milk, a paralyzer is a nice drink, too.

wicked.
cpaw was does neat mean? no ice?
I've got a cough so I want to stay away from anything creamy but rye and ginger sounds alright.

Neat means nothing is added. No water, no ice, etc.
If you want to cut the taste, you can order a coke back with your neat whiskey so that you have something else to sip on and if worse comes to worse, you can pour the whiskey into the coke.

Will I have to identify any brand names? In reality, I just want whatever is cheap and decent but if I step to the bar and ask for a neat scotch whiskey and a separate coke, I should walk away with what I want.
is a coke back a term for another cup with coke in it?

Black Label on the Rocks ... smooth
Bushmill's on the Rocks ... underrated whiskey, but one of my favorites

Yeah, convention is spirit and mixer is a mixed drink while spirit with mixer back is the mixer in a separate glass. Depending on the bartender, you may want to specify tall on the back drink, otherwise you'll get a rocks glass with coke which doesn't last very long.
In general, you should specify the brand that you want otherwise, you'll get the well (aka rot gut). If you don't know what you want, you can always ask what the bar's call scotches are and pick from them.

Like cpawfan said nothing added. Thats what it was made for anyways. Not to mix it with the other crap.
Maybe some ice.....if you like ice.

Thanks to you I won't look like an idiot until after the third drink tomorrow!
It's the last day of college classes - just internships after tomorrow - and as budding journalists, we want to live up to the slogan of "no booze, no news".

QUOTE (shapecity)

Black Label on the Rocks ... smooth

JWBL on rocks owns all, its on sale for $24 at Longs this week too btw.
I guess it depends on what kind of party you're going to. Is it a casual college/high school party or are we talking grown ass adults? Only thing I see mixed with whiskey is coke and lemon juice (whiskey sour). Other easy college/high school appropriate cocktails would be screwdriver (orange juice + vodka), jager bombs (red bull + jager), red bull and vodka, egg nog and rum, brandy and root beer, Irish car bomb (Guinness with a shot of irish creme and whiskey).
If you're talking about a legit adult party or going to a bar or something I got nothing for you except cop that Johnnie Walker Black on the rocks.

QUOTE (Shookem)

It's going to be at a bar and I suspect the average age will be somewhere around 24.

Eh, you probably don't want to look like a 15 year old ordering some of those drinks I mentioned then lol. Then again, I've never been to a bar so I don't know what the bar ettiquette is as far as what 24 year olds "should" drink. If you're looking to get trashed, go for a couple Irish Car Bombs, if you're just casually drinking like an adult, Black Label.

How about a 7&7 or whiskey and ginger-ale. Probably my favorite whiskey drinks. or a whiskey sour, but that might be kinda girlie i guess, but its good.
