I heard a song by a hip hop producer I just discovered (Presto), and heard a singer that really intrigued me. I'm a Vinia Mojica fan (thanks, Blackstar), and so I decided to go see what else Kim Hill has done...

Turns out she was a member of the Black Eyed Peas before they made it big. This was news to me, since her singing style doesn't sound like it would match up with the hip-pop sounds of the group. Well, there's good reason for that.

There's a divide to be made here. There's before 2000; pre-Elephunk; Kim Hill. There's also post 2000; break out album Elephunk; Fergie. Check out the difference

What the hell? It's like night and day. Here I thought I that BEP were so-so, turns out I was listening to the wrong version all along.

Here's some of their solo work:

It's called selling out. I don't think you can blame it all on Fergie. There's a lot of artists/groups that used to be good, but now they make garbage.

I remember when Fergie first joined, Will basically said it was done with the intention to sell more records and be more pop sounding. His experiment paid off, I suppose.
But pre Fergie, and if they stayed without her, they were, to me, approaching the A Tribe Called Quest level.

Ok I'll be honest, I was a bit hesitant when you dropped the ATCQ comparison. However I'm halfway through "Grassroots," and I've got to say I'm a believer.

BTW that first video doesn't allow embedding I guess, but you can click the link and listen to the song.

Jigga's been pretty much on point throughout the whole thread imo.

Yeah I agree with you there, but the real reason you don't like her in that picture is because you're annoyed/etc. by her. If that were some other attractive chick, you'd be making a bunch of excuses for her. To be honest I feel bad for her there.

People need to get this Fergie garbage off the mainstream environment though. :/

yup. I'm not too familiar with their work prior to her being involved, but I can't say the blame all goes to her. They had to make a choice to turn into the crap they're making today.

I like this thread, I was a peas fan long before Fergie. "Behind the Front" was a great album I think Head Bobs and Fallin Up are my favorite tracks off that album, check it out.

I still remember when they put out Elephunk, with the first single featuring Justin Timberlake, it was all downhill from there. I hope Jurassic 5 doesn't sell out like BEP did.

I had never heard of the BEP before Fergie. Going pop gave them widestream success, earned them money, they are probably happy earning more money and getting fame.
