The player that was injured was Serge Akakpo, Player for FC Vaslui in Romanian League. He was shot twice in the back, hopefully its not career threatning http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/8449319.stm
Lots more news here and none of it good. The death toll is up to a confirmed three now. Assistant coach Abalo Amelete and a spokesperson, Stanislas Ocloo, have passed along with the bus driver who died yesterday. There is no word yet on keeper, Kodjovi Obilale, who was reported dead yesterday, but appears to have been moved to South Africa. Defender Serge Akakpo was the other player shot in the attack, but it does not appear that he is seriously injured. Togo have withdrawn from the tournament and several are calling for the tournament to be cancelled. Several Premier League managers are calling for the cancellation of this tournament, according to soccernet. Phil Brown is particularly outspoken, though I believe he reacts that way for most things. Brown is also questioning the safety of the World Cup in South Africa. There is an interesting note at the end there, where the CAF is wondering why Togo were travelling by bus, rather than flying from Togo to Angola. Additionally, Udinese are requesting the return of Kwadwo Asamoah of Ghana.
Terrifying. I usually disagree with Brown (entirely) but in this case the safety concerns have been somewhat validated.
Not to be insensitive, but at least it wasnt a player that died, there would be a shitstorm, especially if that player was from a premier team in europe, Just sad.
Yep, no joke, easily could've been Adebayor. But I think they'd hold a guy like him for ransom rather than murder him. Think of all the ransoms and shit Central/South American players have to deal with.
AP with an article on Kodjovi Obilale, the keeper injured in this attack. He's received no support from his country or the CAF or FIFA.
