One more plug for Mayo. He's on a rookie scale contract. He'd have to prove his worth for us to have to pay him a whole lot more down the road.
You bring up the stupidest argument I've heard from other posters regarding for why not to acquire Mayo (not from here as much as other boards): If Mayo is good the Bulls are going to have to pay him a lot. Well yeah? Isn't that the best case scenario? Don't we want the franchise's players to be able to command a high salary because they're good?
We do SST trouble is JR makes us nervous. He has always said he would pay for a winner. Well, he has never defined what that term means. Is is a team that makes the EC finals only or makes the finals but loses? We don't know what is on his mind.
Maybe I didn't make myself clear. Of all the guys out there, a guy like Mayo on a rookie scale contract is a guy we can easily get now because of our fiscal inflexibility. To get a guy like JRich, we'd have to part with $12M in salaries. To get a guy like Mayo, we have to part with something like $2M in salaries. If we got a guy like JRich on a longer term contract, we're stuck paying him. Our options are to trade several players to bring in a top notch SG, do nothing because the other SGs we can obtain are incremental upgrades, use our MLE and draft picks to try for an SG upgrade... Mayo makes about MLE already, so we'd still have MLE to use to add some depth at SF. See?
It's worth noting that the "we'll have to pay Mayo a whole bunch of money" argument is even sillier because he's still on his rookie deal next year. That means we'd have a year and a half, along with two playoff runs, to determine whether he was a good fit for the team long term before shelling out dough. We'd also have an opportunity to trade him at the deadline next year, and even if he loses value, I doubt his value would totally disappear. I prefer trading for OJ right now over all other options. If it takes all three first rounders plus Bogans, I'm fine with that. I'm a huge advocate of OJ's talent, although I'm mystified as to what's happened to him this year. However, we need not just another shooter at SG but another talent to take some pressure off Rose. It also wouldn't hurt if that guy was a good ball handler and was young and could grow with the core. That's OJ and very few other guys in the league. As for Lee, I am intrigued, but I'm only willing to part with the two non-Charlotte first rounders and Bogans for him if push comes to shove. He fits a need very well, but his price shouldn't be as high. I'd like an upgrade at that position over Bogans, and knowing that Thibs likes him means that he would actually commit to playing him. He's also, in general, a solid fit, with his shooting, defense, and age. I do worry about a first rounder who gets traded to his fourth team in his third year though. He's either been too average or too inconsistent for anyone to really care about hanging onto.
Reports are we are offering Korver for Mayo. http://benmaller.com/2011/02/nets-trying-to-land-o-j-mayo/ http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2011/feb/23/if-memphis-grizzlies-make-deal-nothing-major-expec/
Hmm, Korver and likely some draft picks. I think I'd do it. We'd have to pick up another shooter in the offseason, but we'd have an absolutely scaring starting five.
For what it's worth, Ric Bucher supposedly just reported that Memphis took Mayo off of the trading block.
How about a three team trade wit mem and hou where mem trades thabeet to hou and we get lee, while send some draft picks and maybe like bogans or someone to either mem or hou? Theyve been shopping thabeet and cant find any suitors, and hou is looking for an extra big
Sooo apparently Chad Ford has tweeted that hes also heard OJ to Pacers for McRoberts and a 1st...if this is true im gonna be kinda upset lol
Eh . . . that's probably more value than the Bulls could have offered, right? I could understand why someone would like McRoberts more than both Gibson and Asik and the Pacers' pick will be better than the Bulls'.
Yea its true, they sent Mayo to ind for j-mac (lame nickname) and a 1st. I feel like we couldve offered Taj and charlotte's pick for oj
I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the conversations the Bulls had for Mayo. I don't blame the Bulls for not offering up a worthwhile deal at this point, since Memphis may have just procrastinated until the deadline passed anyhow. On the other hand, I do think that the Bulls could have offered Taj and/or Asik and picks and even Korver. It _really_ would have been worth a shot, as DMD elegantly wrote.
OK, now I'm a bit pissed off at Bulls management. http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2011/02/bulls-stand-pat-at-deadline.html LOL Mayo would have cost us just Gibson and a couple of picks. This has to fuck up chemistry, just the players knowing that Korver was dangled and Taj as well. The rumors posted in this forum are surely known by the team and players as well.
