If this were true, then why would all reports continue to indicate that his rehab is going well and that he will be back on the court this season? Rice & Barrett have no real incentive to comment on Oden (especially given the team's start), but they continue to point out that his rehab is going well and that he will likely be on the court sooner rather than later.

Personally, I don't think Oden would even be practicing with the team if his knee was in the condition you describe.

Of course, these are just some of my observations. I'm sure the Blazers and the medical staff know a heck of a lot more about Oden's health (or lack thereof) than anyone on this Board.

This news means we have about $6 million of salary space before we hit the luxury tax. Non-tax paying teams have a $5 million window to match salaries, so we could trade someone like Luke Babbit and a future draft pick and take back a player earning $6.7 million this year. That could be very valuable if a team is out of the playoff race and willing to dump a productive veteran at the trade deadline.

Barrett also said Kemp was in phenominal shape every offseason, so I put virtually zero stock into his assertations.

This season is not about Money (he's got enough for now), it's about 2 things: Getting 100% healthy and increasing his future contract value. They are accomplished by rehabbing as long as possible, and taking less money from the Blazers now, so that they'll pay him more later. Does that make sense? Furthermore, Oden really doesn't want to be perceived as taking money for nothing, he already feels bad enough about the past 4 years.

I agree ... Barrett is definitely a homer and sees what he wants to see.

But given Oden's history, you'd think the Blazers would have put a gag order on talking about him at all.

There's probably more to this story than has been reported, but I still hold out hope (albeit a sliver) that Oden will return sometime in January or February and will at least be semi-productive. To me, a 75% Oden is still better than a 100% 39-yr old Kurt Thomas.

I just think for what ever reason he wanted to be fair and basically give back 6 million dollars that he has yet to earn. Maybe for good Karma, maybe out of guilt because he is not coming back, or maybe because he does want to come back and figures it will help him get the higher end of the next contract.

Bottom line is he didn't have to do it, but felt it was the right thing to do. Maybe hoping fans and management will appreciate it and it will take a little pressure off getting back quickly this year.

People's false assumptions. That fact is, The Blazers and Oden have worked together to manage this never-ending PR nightmare...

There is something highly overlooked in this sage, and that is the relationship between Larry Miller and Greg Oden. Until you understand their relationship, you won't understand what the Blazers are doing. You can have your own opinions, but they will be uninformed.

The Blazers believe in Greg, you may not, but Larry and crew does, more-so than anyone in the league. Greg knows that, and he's appreciated them standing by his side helping him through all this. The bottom line is, they want whats best for each other, because they believe it will most likely bring the best outcome. Healthy Greg, Blazers uniform, Max Contract, Championship. Take it or leave it but it's the best shot we got.

Real question: If somebody asked you to give away 7.5 million dollars would you do it?

Now imagine your whole livelihood centers around being a pro athlete and typically you've got maybe 10-15 years to earn your money, but in your case you've been plagued with injuries and it's looking like your window is maybe just 5-8 years to earn your money and you've already "used up" 5 years would you still give 7.5 million dollars away? Maybe you would and maybe even Oden would, but do you really think an agent would let him? I would call that highly unlikely . . .

I can't, you won't listen. Until you clear your mind of your own point of view, you can't actually hear what I have to say.

Since we're all just guessing as to what may have happened, here's mine:

The Blazers got the results of Greg's physical and didn't like what they saw. They had the right under the CBA to withdraw their QO, in which case Greg would have become an unrestricted free agent. Since his medical records would be reviewed by any team considering making him an offer, his chances of getting a big contract would be nil, plus he would lose the benefits of the Blazers having Bird Rights on him and being able to offer him a longer and more lucrative deal than anyone else. Rather than doing that, he was willing to sign a one year deal for less money on the hope that he'll be able to come back before the end of the year and prove that in next summer's FA market he's worth a max deal either to the Blazers or another team.

    Yet he did.......

But no I would not. I would probably take less in the next contract for that same team and earn it all back. But there is something to be said for peace of mind. I doubt guys like Koncak and Ostertag ever enjoyed another minute playing in the NBA after getting paid too much and hearing it from the fans every night. They went from fan favorites to villain in one year.

the way i see it is that the contract was voided, and the blazers being sweethearts threw him a bone...so your tangent doesnt really strike a chord
