If they want to shed salary for 2014 where are the improvements going to come from?

Assuming they still want to get to the $189 million number for next year how do they do so and still improve? I understand money will come off the books but you still have to replace those guys and at the same time improve. I guess I just don't see what the plan is.

That is what I posted 2 days ago. Between now and the deadline, I expect to see a plan from the FO to solve not only any opportunity to salvage this season, but also to start setting a course for next. I agree with you, so far all the talk from FO doesn't make sense because like you stated, they are going to have to spend. here is what I predict to happen.

    1) Hughes is going no where, will be tendered an offer and that hopefully will turn into draft pic.
    2) Grandy signs one year like was stated earlier, good guy, good team guy, 1 OF spot for 2014
    3) With Tex and Jeter returning, along with the Cano signing, 1B,2B and SS are manned.
    4) Before the deadline, I expect a deal for a long term 3B, Hopefully Headley, Switch hitter with power and decent D. 2 Pitchers, Hughes and Clairborne or the such.
    5) Gardner and Ichiro are OF 2 and 3, with Almonte the 4th outfielder, cheap, Switch hitter and decent defense.
    6) Arod if he is in the equation is DH. Hopefully this cancer and distraction is off the team. Hey I can dream!
    7) Nix and Cruz are utility infielders
    8) Catcher, this is where my crystal ball goes blank. I can see Cervelli or Stewart
but not both. An Upgrade is required regardless.

That will about balance the gain from expiring contracts this year. So the organization plan to be below 189 million is a pipe dream as far as I am concern.

I don't see where the improvements are coming from either. The pitching is their strength and they are just getting older and losing Mo. Their hitting is a mess. Their prospect pool is not performing. Normally, I'm a pretty optimistic fan, but I see down times ahead.

...SS, 3B, and Catcher is where they are really hurting.

You're right. those are 3 spots that need major attention. I'm not thrilled with what I've seen from Nunez regarding SS. Chase Headley is an option for 3B as someone mentioned but not for the 8.5M he's making this year. I don't know where the blown up #s came from last season (though I could guess). 31 HRs & 115 rbi. considering he never hit more then 12. And this year he just plain sucks with 7/31/230. As far as Catcher you have to remember that Cervelli's name is also on that Florida list with A-Rod, Braun & the others.

Bottom line IMO, there's just no freaking way they're going to be any where close to 189M

Nunez friggin stinks. The guy had a huge opportunity this season and was a major disappointment. At the catcher spot you have to let one of these kids compete for and hopefully win the job in spring training next year.

From what I've read, Hank and Hal have gradually realized that the $189 goal is not practical and is probably not attainable.

It's not attainable unless they want to field a team of absolute trash.
