Re: Hey further Also there is some really good info in this thread. Someone really needs to come up with a better title for it.
Might want to check into seeing if you have a slow thyroid as well. That can/will mess with your metabolism. It runs in my family (wish i would have known earlier, thanks mom!) so I take 50mcg daily to offset and return thyroid levels to normal. Low carb works well, 50g or less a day, run your body into ketosis for a month or so, then gradually ramp up to 70g a day. Ketosis isn't good for long term, but it will really cut your weight quickly. The hard part is the first 2-3 weeks where you feel like you have no damn energy. I offset that by hitting upwards of 200g of protein a day and working out 1-2 hrs 3-4 days a week + snowboarding on the weekend in the Winter. Dropped about 15lbs, from 195, to ~180. For me, that's pretty good considering I'm never good at losing weight and I like beer/wine. I think my biggest negative has to be the booze. Alcohol will straight up kill your weight loss regime. Make no mistake about that. Your body MUST remove all alcohol before it reverts to burning any food, or stored energy (fat). Stay away from booze, sugars, processed carbs, and just anything 'fake' in general. Stick with high fiber (those tortillas that are high fiber low carb are great for mixing up dinner flavors) and high protein.
I still think the advice in Omnivore's Dilemma is sound. Eat food. Mostly plants. In moderation. He advises not to eat anything your grandmother would not recognize as food. I'm sure my grandmothers never ate bok choy but would clearly recognize it as food. (They'd probably ask in Yiddish, so what kind of cabbage is that?) Actually I was doing really well until my cat disappeared, instead of going to gym after work and walking before I spent all my time searching for her and stopped caring what I ate. Now all my jeans are tight. I just started going back to the gym (it's so easy to find excuses to not go!). But this Friday is the company barbecue. They are setting up five barbecue pits featuring five regional barbecue styles (Memphis, Kansas City, Texas, Carolina, Hawaii). Not exactly diet food!
The BBQ is fine on a Paleo diet, which your great great great great great grandmothers would recognize as food. The sauce might be the problem though.
The BBQ also includes potato salads, corn bread, rice & beans, etc. My grandmothers sure never ate pulled pork!
Denny, if you want to make a desert that is atkins friendly, I made a key lime pie once that is kind of an awkward recipe. http://www.cajuncookingrecipes.com/atkins/cakes6.htm I suggest adding extra lime juice, and to not expect anything amazing, but it's actually pretty decent.
Re: Hey further True story, I saw Morgan Fairchilds boobs. I was in high school and she was filming at my high school. On a path between our theater and the rest of the school, I saw and asked for an autograph. She was wearing a very airy dress, likely easy to get in and out of for costume changes. She bent over a bit to sign the autograph, and my pervy 17 year old self looked down her dress and saw a glorious braless site including nip. At 17, that made it into my bank.
I'm not exactly doing Atkins. I'm eating 25-30g of carbs a day. Induction phase for Atkins is 20g. Some diets I read about allow 100-150, which means fruit and pasta and bread in moderation. Right now I am consciously avoiding carbs tho. I got some coconut meal yesterday. Looks like flour, acts like flour. I figure I'll wait a couple of weeks, then mess around with pancakes or whatever I can come up with.
My doc is having me log my food and exercise on fitnesspal. It's good to have accountability, but boy is it tedious. I am like, I really want to cheat on my diet, but then I have to log my food and so instead I will eat something healthier.
