FCC considering move to ban NFL Redskins team name

Didn't it end up that the "story" of how they were "honoring" the Native Americans on team ended up being horse shit?

They were originally called the Braves, because they shared the stadium with the Boston Braves. However, that first year wasn't the greatest, so they moved over to Fenway and shared it with the Red Sox. In an attempt to re-brand/re-birth the franchise, they went to name it something else. And since it was commonplace for teams to share names (NY Giants, NY Giants, St Louis Cardinals, St Louis Cardinals, etc) the easiest thing to do was make it sound a lot like the Red Sox, but not call it the Red Sox. So, Red Skins was born.

It's not about honoring the Native Americans on the team.

Marshall (team owner) saying: “The fact that we have in our head coach, Lone Star Dietz, an Indian, together with several Indian players, has not, as may be suspected, inspired me to select the name Redskins.”

Instead, Marshall explains, he gave up “Braves” to avoid confusion with a Boston professional baseball team of the same name.

If the changing of the name causes you to no longer be a fan (anyone), then you weren't a real fan to begin with.

I'm not a fan of the Portland "trail blazers", I'm a fan of the NBA team that plays in Portland Oregon. They could be the Portland Ladybugs for all I care.

You should watch the video Fez posted.

I think it's white people deciding what the Indians must feel. They've been asked, and they aren't bothered in the least by the name.

Illinois is full of places named after Indians. Whoopee.

It's interesting that the Indians (Cleveland), who have been called "Indians" longer than the Redskins have been called Redskins, are quietly phasing out Chief Wahoo as their logo.

They've used the Chief Wahoo logo since about 1947ish and now are dropping it. And guess what, their fans are still fans.

Irrelevant.

A racial slur is a racial slur.

Some of them aren't bothered. Some are.

And places named *after* Native Americans isn't the same as a name that has a negative history behind it. And before anyone has a cow, this statement is true even if you say that Redskins doesn't have a negative history behind it.

A lot of names in Oregon and Washington are named for or after Native Americans. But they aren't done to disparage them, but to honor them.

I think the bigger issue is if the name is from what THEY call themselves (Siletz) vs what white would call them.

It's a slur, and I'd love to see top players voice their disgust. I like to see more fans stop supporting the team. And I'd love to see other tactics like that work to pressure a name change. However, there's something that bothers me about a workaround and getting the fcc to be the ones to force the change.

The term "whites" is a far more frequently used racial slur which offends many more millions of people and is used in a demeaning manner constantly by all forms of media all-day everyday.

"Blacks" is also used in media almost exclusively as a substitute for the N-word.

I have yet to meet a nameless person so maybe people should just use other people's names when referring to them.

The practice of referring to entire races as a whole for any reason is blatantly racist, and shows not only an ignorance of anthropology, but also just plain ignorance of human beings.

The Federal government assures that racism continues by demanding your race on most of it's forms and in it's census, and by hiring (and then training at taxpayer expense) totally unqualified people for federal jobs (because they are "minorities") when qualified and highly trained people are readily available in large numbers.

Exactly how is it a derogatory term?

Redskin to me says "fierce enemy" or "warrior."

The people who seem to be offended by the team's name are predominantly white skins.

I think pigskins would work great, plus they also have the fans dressed like hogs there right? Done deal

I think they should name them the "Washington santeesioux", and pay me a lot of money every time the name is mentioned.

Hell I don't care what they call that team. What pisses me off is they changed the name of a beautiful mountain we used to have from "Squaw Tit" to something irrelevant.
That was a crime.

Hey, you actually read the history! Too bad you still missed the point.

The Boston Football Braves changed their name to the Redskins because it was close to the Red Sox. They didn't want to lose their indian moniker, so they made it as close to the Red Sox as possible.

Now, ask yourself what color paint did indians typically put on their face before battle? You're almost there. C'mon, you can do it!

When we get an NHL team we should name it the Portland Bums to honor all of the Bums that Terrence Jones like to stomp on.

There's an underground movement to get the Portland Fire back, because of the Fire emojii.

washington squaw tits has a nice ring to it

For the record, I don't think we need to stoop to someone else's idiocy because they may be offended. It's like the DC Councilman who demanded the word "*****rdly" be dropped from all official DC documents.

In the words of Inigo Montoya:

How do you know it's a slur? Please, educate us on why when the team was renamed the Boston Redskins, it was done so as a slur.

Yep. The Skins are getting gypped by the PC police and their price is being jewed down. Freaking indian givers.

im pretty sure those are all incredibly insensitive
