It's a slur, and I'd love to see top players voice their disgust. I like to see more fans stop supporting the team. And I'd love to see other tactics like that work to pressure a name change. However, there's something that bothers me about a workaround and getting the fcc to be the ones to force the change.
At least once a month. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=redskin potatoes Spanish peanuts are also commonly known as redskins. http://www.yourdictionary.com/redskin
The term "whites" is a far more frequently used racial slur which offends many more millions of people and is used in a demeaning manner constantly by all forms of media all-day everyday. "Blacks" is also used in media almost exclusively as a substitute for the N-word. I have yet to meet a nameless person so maybe people should just use other people's names when referring to them. The practice of referring to entire races as a whole for any reason is blatantly racist, and shows not only an ignorance of anthropology, but also just plain ignorance of human beings. The Federal government assures that racism continues by demanding your race on most of it's forms and in it's census, and by hiring (and then training at taxpayer expense) totally unqualified people for federal jobs (because they are "minorities") when qualified and highly trained people are readily available in large numbers.
Exactly how is it a derogatory term? Redskin to me says "fierce enemy" or "warrior." The people who seem to be offended by the team's name are predominantly white skins.
I think pigskins would work great, plus they also have the fans dressed like hogs there right? Done deal
I think they should name them the "Washington santeesioux", and pay me a lot of money every time the name is mentioned.
Hell I don't care what they call that team. What pisses me off is they changed the name of a beautiful mountain we used to have from "Squaw Tit" to something irrelevant. That was a crime.
When we get an NHL team we should name it the Portland Bums to honor all of the Bums that Terrence Jones like to stomp on.
Hey, you actually read the history! Too bad you still missed the point. The Boston Football Braves changed their name to the Redskins because it was close to the Red Sox. They didn't want to lose their indian moniker, so they made it as close to the Red Sox as possible. Now, ask yourself what color paint did indians typically put on their face before battle? You're almost there. C'mon, you can do it!
And do you think the team name "Redskins" was based on a racial slur? P.S. There's a right answer here.
For the record, I don't think we need to stoop to someone else's idiocy because they may be offended. It's like the DC Councilman who demanded the word "*****rdly" be dropped from all official DC documents. In the words of Inigo Montoya:
How do you know it's a slur? Please, educate us on why when the team was renamed the Boston Redskins, it was done so as a slur.
Yep. The Skins are getting gypped by the PC police and their price is being jewed down. Freaking indian givers.
