Um, actually that is what I said. What does that have to do with anything? Even if the name wasn't done (initially) as a slur, thats what the name is perceived by some people.
It is a racial slur. In the mid/late 1800's the term 'Redskin' was used in reference to a scalp and/or bounty. The 'RedSox' defense is asinine.
Well I think it's pretty apparent what they must do. Washington already has the Washington Wizards, so the Redskins should change their name to the Washington Ian Mckellens. Problem solved. You're welcome.
Is that our bar? That some people may find a term offensive? Do you think "some people" may be offended by U Penn's "Fighting Quakers" name? I bet there are "some" religious people who think it's blasphemy that New Orleans is names the Saints. I bet I could find "some" fine, liberal folk in New England who find the term "Patriot" offensive. The FCC can only ban an indecent work. Moreover, the FCC has a specific definition for "indecent". It is as follows: “in context, depicts or describes sexual or excretory activities or organs in a patently offensive manner as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast medium.” Does that seem to fit the term "Redskins"?
I never knew all that about the excretory organs and what not. I'd like to research that a little deeper
