Not sure why teams passed on him, he love's basketball. He only signed his rights to Baltimore for $428,000 for 6 years he keeps that money or they give up his rights. They get him if he ever decides to play baseball in the next 6 years. They're betting against him making it. He was upfront with them that basketball was his main sport. He didn't blow that money either, bought a jeep and put rest in the bank. Bunch of places to drive that jeep in Oregon.
Was anyone really worries he'd pick baseball? He wouldnt have been playing for the orioles for years. Minors more likely.
Eventually when he's an established player I want to see him play baseball Jun-Sep then back to the Blazers. We've never seen a dual sport NBA MLB
The Blazers gave Pat Connaughton a 3-yr deal, $625.1k in 1st year, final season non-guaranteed at min $2.5 mil total
But it's for peanuts. Doubt 625K gets in the way of us making a roster move, and if we really needed a spot, even eating his contract won't be a big deal. Surprised he took that litte
For comparison, they gave Crabbe a 3-yr deal for 2.6M total but both years 2/3 were not guaranteed. Also he was the 31st pick, and Pat was 41st.
I think people are giving three year deals to 2nd rounders now so they get their Bird rights? That means you can go over the cap to re-sign them and another team can't steal them away.
I think PC is the sleeper signing of the offseason for the Blazers. Might just become a really solid 2 guard in the rotation.
Paul Allen drafted him for the Master Plan. With a baseball star already here, MLB will be forced to grant Allen a Portland a franchise or else Connaughton's talent will be wasted.
