Fabricio Oberto will become a restricted free agent on July 1st. However he reportedly wants to remain with the team. Of course it will depend on how much Fabricio expects as the Spurs are typically fiscally conservative. At least as a restricted free agent the Spurs will have the right of first refusal.Michael Finley can also choose to opt out of his contract for next year and become an unrestricted FA. He has until July 1 to decide.-----http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/basketb...N.14230e05.html ?He has no intention of going anywhere else,? said the Chicago-based agent, who also represents Oberto?s Argentine teammate, Manu Ginobili. ?That?s why he did it. The whole purpose of this is to get a new contract. They recognize his contribution. R.C. and Pop are smart guys and they know he fits like a glove with the whole system and the way he plays.?The plan is for me to negotiate a deal at the appropriate time with R.C. and have him stay there.?Buford said the club ?will do everything we can? to make certain Oberto remains a Spur.

I really don't see him in a better situation then what he has now. He would be very smart to sign back on with the Spurs.

I hope he doesn't return, he's worthless against good teams, he had a great series against the jazz cause they suck down low and it made him look like he did great all playoffs, but he sucked against the nuggets, was worthless against the suns, and if we had played the mavs he would've been worthless there........ he came through in the clutch in game 4 of the finals but overall he wasn't that much of a factor......... so if he leaves it won't be a blow to the team at all........ so that's why I hope some team is stupid enough to offer him a big deal, because the spurs would be stupid to give a 32 slower then dirt under sized center more then a 2 year deal

Good luck testing the market Oberto... [IMG] The center position for the Spurs is pretty much useless when you have quite possibly the greatest power forward of all-time working the low post. They've shuffled out Nestorivich, Malik Rose, Nazr Mohammad...it doesn't really matter. They could have Shawn Bradley starting at center and they would win the title.

If I was the Spurs id stick to re-signing him, he seems to not cause any problems and he's consistint over different streaches of time.

I wouldn't mind if he left. We have Elson who brings a lot of energy, and I would like to see what Jackie Butler can do. If the Spurs staff isn't confident that Butler can be a backup, then they should re-sign Oberto, if they do, don't bother with him.

I hope Oberto comes back. His first year with the team was kind of a waste as it took him a while to pick up the system. But last year I think he really paid dividends. He is an excellent passer and moves very well without the ball. He has a knack for tipping out rebounds to teammates. Overall he has a high basketball IQ. I noticed that when he used to get minutes he would usually get in immediate foul trouble. But as time went on he was able to adjust his game and keep himself off the bench. I especially enjoyed when he and Manu were in the game together as they clearly had good chemistry and were able to anticipate each other's moves. That being said the Spurs carefully positioned themselves so that most significant contracts except the Big Three will expire after next season. If Oberto truly wants to come back and simply wants a few more years on his contract then I think it will happen. But if he is looking to make a significant salary jump (I.e., starting center money) I wouldn't count on it. As WelcomeToTheJungle said the Spurs treat the center spot as plug-and-play. So it essentially is starting center by committee.Besides the team has options if Oberto chooses to walk. Elson showed potential at times but lacked consistency and court awareness. But again it did take Oberto a year to settle in.Other than Elson you can't rule out a foreign big coming in as they considered last year.Or one of the free agents this year is PJ Brown. The Spurs tried to sign him in previous seasons. He is not young (but neither is Oberto) and he is reportedly a true professional and a Spur type of player. The Spurs love to bring in deserving veterans who still have the hunger to win a first championship.Anyway hopefully Oberto is sincere in his desire to stay. I agree that his game will not fit in quite as nicely with any other team.

How can you say that the spurs should not keep fabricio. He is the best center that finishes around the basket that the spurs have had since David Robinson. In case yall dont remember, Fabricio had an and-one layup and another clutch layup in the final 2 1/2 minutes of game 4. He is a good asset for the team the next 2-3 years.

Oberto did more than just in the Jazz series, he played well in games from a few of those other series. He might not have scored alot, but he did little things to help out alot. In that Denver series, he drew quite a few offensive charges, a group of those going on Carmelo Anthony. He drew those from great rotational skills, sliding into the correct spot, and maybe doing just a bit of acting. In any case though, that was a defensive ability that helped you guys out alot, while killing momentum for the Nuggets a few times throughout the series. He plays with solid energy when he comes off the bench, trys hard every time, and I think contributes to the San Antonio toughness and grit with his energy and passion. I wouldn't sign him back for much money, but if he was willing to come back at a low price tag, I would completely bring him back.
