Slightly different scenarios there. Besides the fact that the people who were on the Lakers are, for the most part, still alive, James Camerons movie wasn't *about* the Titanic as much as it was a made up story about people ON the titanic. The main characters in the movie aren't based on real people. Had the story "winning time" been about made up employees that worked for the lakers, then you could make the analogy. But this was about the Lakers, Magic, Kareem, West, etc, and used real events and stories to tell their story.
I have watched the whole thing. I'm talking about changing major historical facts to fit a plot based on real life.
It's one thing to change history if the expectation from the viewer is the movie isn't really based on fact. A perfect example of this is Inglorious Basterds. The movie takes place during WWII, and there are some historical figures in it, but everyone knows that the movie isn't based on reality. Hitler didn't die in a movie theater in Paris. Everyone knows this (at least I hope) and we all understand that the movie is taking major liberties in the name of entertainment. That's not the case with Winning Time.
It's weird to me that they didn't get anyone's permission, are using intellectual property that's not theirs, and then are (as you say) basically just making stuff up. Why should they be able to ride the coattails of people and brands without licensing anything, and yet be utterly irresponsible with how those people and entities are portrayed? If this was a show with the same plot but fake basketball teams and fake names, I bet that they wouldn't get nearly the publicity and viewership that they're getting now and it seems like HBO is doing so unfairly.
The mother's real-life timeline has been adjusted to show that along with his daughter, ex-wife, and the accountant, sexist Buss required women to succeed in business. To show that his mother played a vital role in Buss' business successes would require starting this show years before he acquired the Lakers. This isn't a show about his mother, it's about Buss and the Lakers.
But like...... his mom suggesting that he sign the team over to his ex-wife is a major plot point. I get what you're saying but...... you can't just change history because you find the story to be boring or not compelling enough.
Also Magic would bring Kareem hot dogs instead of orange juice every morning. https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertai...-hot-dog-every-morning-not-orange-juice.html/ I can't believe they're lying to us like this!
Minor things don't matter. Implying they had losses against teams they *didn't* lose to is another. In the same episode they had the teams record written on a chalkboard (implying they were 40-16) vs the Celtics record (I think 41-13?). Only problem is, the Lakers were never 40-16, they were 39-17 at that point. So why not just put the actual record of the team down, as if saying 40-17 is so much worse? Why lie about such a small thing? And if you're lying about such a small thing (or if lying is too harsh for you, how about embellish), that just makes me question every thing you're saying.
The movie Fargo claims it's a true story. It's not. Now I question everything they showed in the movie.
Was fargo a well known, and documented thing? Because the Lakers are a well known and documented thing. Can I easily look up stuff about the plot of fargo? No. Can I easily look up stuff about the Lakers 79-80 season? Yes.
You just linked me to the plot of the movie. I have friends who are laker fans (hyaha, I know "yeah right, you have friends") and trust me, they're far more pissed about this than we are. I find it annoying from a factual point of view.
