That's very sad, but also I think that reporter is really not good at geography.

I drove a VW bug from Chicago to San Diego once and thought I was lucky to survive the trip....not a great choice of a car to take a road trip with...and not likely to survive a crash in one...RIP...sad story.

I guess it depends on his final destination in Alaska. Like, Skagway is under 2 days (of straight driving) from Selma Or.

    Why do you say that?
There is a Selma, Oregon just North of Cave Junction on Hwy 199.

Sure, but is it two days drive from Alaska? Not unless you drive like a madman.

And since it had taken him 5 years to drive from Brazil to Selma, no way was it going to take him just 2 days to finish the trip.

Talk about taking a road trip to the next level. It makes me wonder what the most adventurous (and maybe slightly crazy) road trips would be.Looking at a map, I wouldn't mind tackling a journey through Scandinavia myself someday, but according to the "Most Dangerous and Safest Countries Index" there might be a few hairy situations to navigate. Do any of you experienced travelers have recommendations for epic road trips that are both challenging and rewarding? Maybe somewhere off the beaten path? I'm all about breathtaking scenery and unique cultures, but I also don't want to be tempting fate too much!
