I think we could have. We could have probably traded CJ and #7 (Sharpe) for Randle and #11 and drafted Jalen Williams. Then we could have likely still traded Nurk for Ayton. Dame, Williams, Grant, Randle, Ayton, is a pretty solid line up.... plus we could have traded Simons...
With a good coach I'd be shocked. That team is top 10 defense easily, and almost certainly top 5 offensively. But even if not... First round beats choosing to lose IMO. We could have run with that for most of Dame's contract then legitimately rebuilt with honor. 5 years in the cellar with quality draft picks and we'd be just as well off as trading Dame.
I don't really care to get in an argument on a hypothetical team. But Dame and Randle are both atrocious on defense and I don't have a lot of faith in Grant guarding 3's.
Randle is a decent defender. I'm not sure where you get that he's terrible... I'd much MUCH prefer that team to what we have now. I'd be looking to move off of Grant. I'm not a fan. But he's still better than most starters Dame has taken to the WCF. And certainly a better defender than most 3s. In fact, every player in that starting line up is better than most of the starters Dame has gone to WCF with.
Randle likes to take plays off. If you read Knicks forums they continuously complain about his basketball iq and defense.
Forums constantly complain about a lot of stuff. His defensive rating is top 70 of all players this season. He's fine. He's turned in seasons with really solid defensive ratings. He's a capable defender. Which is more than we can say for most of the players we've had here with Dame. And he rebounds well. That lineup has capable defenders and size at nearly every position, and they are all offensively gifted. Get them a good coach and I'd be tuning in every night.
I used to look at defensive ratings and took a bunch of value from them. Not anymore. It's just 1 data point to use but statistics can easily be manipulated and have outliers. Fans do complain a lot. We can't just dismiss that though. Its another data point. As is the video I sent where when the game was on the line he didn't even try. This forum complains a lot. However, I'm happy with the direction we are going and hope we suck 1 more year before making our ascent.
Oh, I agree. We definitely need to suck at least one more year given our current situation. Maybe more... But I'm not going to watch much of it
