If we trade some vets and cut salary this might be the year that the ownership changes hands. Come on Knight family we need some new blood in this organization.
I believe the theory is that Jody has an extreme incentive to keep ownership because she gets some huge amount of money for something like "managing a trust"? I think the only way ownership changes is some kind of Donald Sterling scenario. What happened to those rumors of her inappropriate behavior and messing with protected fossils?
Its been two years since this hit the wires in 2022. NBA should force her to sell other wise she will probably sit on the asset and feather her own nest. "Jody Allen, chair of the Blazers, became the trustee of her brother's estate, which includes the Blazers and the NFL's Seattle Seahawks, when he died in 2018. According to reporting from columnist John Canzano, Paul Allen "directed that the trust be liquidated upon his death" and Jody Allen herself said a time would come when the team would be put up for sale "given Paul's plans to dedicate the vast majority of his wealth to philanthropy." RELATED: Nike founder submits $2 billion-plus offer to buy the Portland Trail Blazers: Report The NBA commissioner has said in the past that the Blazers must be sold at some point in the future. Silver said in 2022 he didn't know all the specifics of Allen's trust but that "at some point, the team will be sold. I don't have any sense of the precise timing. ... At some point it will be for sale. ... These things can take time." The NBA requires a team held by an estate to be transferred within a reasonable time period, though as Silver said Wednesday, what constitutes a reasonable time period is subject to interpretation. RELATED: Blazers, Seahawks aren't for sale, 'no sales discussions happening,' Jody Allen says In July 2022, Jody Allen announced that neither the Blazers nor Seahawks were for sale and there were "no sales discussions happening." She went on to say that a time would "come when that changes," but that an estate the size of her brother's "can take 10 to 20 years to wind down." That announcement came about a month after the Blazers confirmed a report that Phil Knight, the co-founder of Nike, and Alan Smolinsky, a minority owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, had submitted an offer of more than $2 billion to buy the Blazers."
Well I can always hope before I hit the burn barrel. Never going anywhere with Jody holding the reins.
She will sell the Blazers first before the Sea Hawks in my opinion. I don't see anyone with the money to buy both pro teams under one ownership.
I wish, but I doubt it. I think this is her retirement that keeps her relevant. I think it'll be another 5 years before she thinks about selling. If not 10.
The TV revenue sharing check Jody received is probably scary gargantuan. Maybe she'll get in on a trip to Mars? There might be some space penguin bones she can smuggle back to Earth.
There has been speculation but nothing confirmed to my knowledge but I thought I saw she had to sell by 2029 and IF true that would be a little over 10 years since PA's death and that kind of makes sense. IF this is true I think she will wait until 2028 or unless someone just gives a offer that is crazy but she will not let go until the last minute on both the Blazers and the Hawks. I hope she proves me wrong but like Cronin I can only go by there history so please prove me wrong and sell this team next summer -- LOL
We've all heard reports that she has to sell the team by this date or that date but dates have come and gone and here we still are with her and Vulcan owning our team and mismanaging it.
Silver and Jody have both said there is no timeline she has to sell by. Jody said she would sell, but these things can take as much as 20 years.
Franchise value of the Portland Trail Blazers (NBA) 2003-2023. The value of the Portland Trail Blazers franchise grew to 3.08 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. This was an increase of roughly 47 percent from the previous year for the National Basketball Association team.Nov 2, 2023. Seattle Seahawks, $5 billion.Aug 31, 2023. Anybody have 8 billion lying around?
I think it is true the sell by date but IF there is a firm date then the closer you get to it then a possible buyer can play hard ball knowing you HAVE to sell so it's in both parties best interest ( Jody and Silver ) not to say a word as that would hurt Jody and IF the NBA confirmed it they would get roasted and maybe sued by Jody.
I've lost all hope the Blazers will be sold anytime soon. Jody seems to have zero interest and nothing forcing her to sell. Someone must come in with a ridiculous offer that she can't refuse.
It wouldn't be the craziest idea that the minute the expansion fees (~$300M per team in one check) come in, the Blazers go on the market with a valuation similar to what the Sonics will have bought in for ($5B)?
In July 2023, Commissioner Adam Silver stated that the NBA would explore a potential expansion of the league once they reach an agreement on a new media rights deal (as the current media rights deal is set to expire in 2025).[2] Silver said in a February 2024 interview on The Pat McAfee Show that Las Vegas was an expansion team candidate.
BOSTON -- With the league already having secured a new collective bargaining agreement last summer and currently finalizing new media rights deals, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said its next order of business will be exploring expansion beyond 30 teams.Jun 6, 2024
LVG and SEA have basically been anointed as the expansion cities since the beginning of COVID, but they had to get the rights deal in place first. It's just about done, and that'll be the domino that starts the expansion buy-ins. Which gives the owners 1/30th of the combined franchise fees (suggested to be 4.5B or so each, so 300M to each current team). Which then gives Ms. Allen no burgeoning financial reason to keep the team longer (especially since she'll have current team worth comps)
