Yes, they should do that this summer. But if they don't....be prepared to be shocked.

obviously, it will depend on the market next summer

but I'm thinking that players of Tybulle's level, and age, will look more at the size of the guaranteed deal than annual salary. He'd be opting out of 11.5M, yes. But if he could sign a 4-year/35-40M deal that would expire when he's 32, that may be worth opting out of 11.5M. He could be guaranteeing 20-30M more

and that could be very attractive if he's going somewhere he wants to be...and we have evidence he really doesn't want to be in Portland

I don't know if he'll be worth that much or not. But math says that would be a starting salary of around 8-8.5M when the full-MLE should be over 14M

Likewise, for you—the rule in the NBA is take the money and figure it out later. Thybulle surely knows this.

Thybulle opt out ??

Will a force from beyond call upon Matisse to take an 8 million dollar paycut to play for a contending team ??

{shakes magic 8 ball}
"LOL, ya right"

Much like Calwell Pope this year, his agent will know ahead of time if some team wants him before he opts out.
And as Wisenheimer mentioned, it will be more about the length of the contract, and total guaranteed money.

Now I do think a lot will depend on how he is used this year......and if they intend to tank again. Players hate tanking even more than most fans. If the money is even close somewhere else why wouldn't he bolt? Although my guess is he will waive his no-trade clause if he can be traded this year, so we probably will never know.

take a quick peek at the MLE market from this offseason. it was tough sledding for a lot of guys: tyus jones and gtj, for two (neither of whom opted out of their respective deals).

I like this guy..hope he's the reincarnation of Drazen Petrovic.

I did love me some Petro. Obviously, Deni can not shoot like Drazen, but is much bigger and a better defender. Can't wait to see how he fits with the others. I think/hope his passing will benefit Ayton.

a chair was a better defender than Petro.

Look up Mario Hzonja’s highlight videos…… Look at Victor Kyrapa’s.

Yes, all three are white and foreign-born. Those are the only similarities I can see.

Neither had a season where they averaged 15-7-4 while shooting 50% from the field and 37% from 3 in 75 games.
If you are basing your expectations on this player by what he did in Washington……

Those ARE good stats, but I’m going by the eye test. Guy played for the worse team in the league. I’ll temper my expectations a bit because of that.

Other than the uniform he wore, what does your "eye test" tell you about Avdija?

That's the whole thing I was basing it on the eye test. I looked up the stats afterward. Not sure about what his scoring average will be but I don't really care. I think he is the type of player who will make his teammates better. The more 2-way players on this team the better.

Dude didn’t put up Westbrook or Whiteside stats so it’s hard to make the jump from random Euros.

I guess I was one of only 3 people to vote no. Was hopeful I was wrong and he would have a quality 3pt shot.

Instead 10 games in I couldn't imagine this going much worse. Deni doesn't even look like a backup rotational player and it's not as if we have a bunch of stars in front of him.

This trade could eventually end up being a real disaster, with how that 2029 pick turns out. Legit could see us and Milwaukee both being top5 in the lottery, and with Boston 2nd apron issues who knows.

He looks like a guy adjusting to a league-worst offense that can't or won't push the pace due to coaching and personnel, and deferring to very mid players who may actually be worse than him.

If the shot were falling it'd be a bit different, but right now he looks lost when he's out there.

He played on the worst roster in the NBA last season with a ball hog PG (Poole) and SF that thinks hes an all-star (Kuzma) so there is no adjustment at all.

Let me start by saying I think Deni is a very good player. I wanted him when he was coming out. I was somewhat happy Portland picked him up, but quietly knew that Joe was going all in with that trade. No trades of Ant/Grant/Ayton/Thybulle or Time Lord. Why trade for a forward when you have Grant and the top two players in the up coming draft forwards, Flagg/Bailey? I do put Edgecombe in the same stratosphere and would be a excellent fall back plan, but damn, this team is just whack! Jody gets the blame with Cronin. Chauncey get none. He is a victim. They players have quit. They do not have to listen to them. Half do not want to be there and would love being benched. I was never a Chauncy fan, but this is not on him.Grant and Ant need gone tomorrow. Take a six pack and pizza back and call it a party.

When Saric was with Philadelphia, everyone posted how great he was. So I watched a little and saw a stiff body trying to do more than he could. After a couple of years, he was an NBA substitute.

Avijda is the same, except I can't spell his name. After his initial fresh attitude wears out, his athleticism level will consign him to being an effort player sub.

I agree. I don't fault Billups at all. But we need to do a better job of developing these players.
