Yeah, I doubt that any coach or agent for said coach, would give the team the option. He's gonna have to put up or shut up starting game 1 next year though.
He’s a shit Xs and Os guy He insisted on starting Ayton, Grant and Ant even though it hindered the team He has a poorer defenses than Stotts what philosophies?
WTF -- This Blazers team in it's ownership group is a fucking joke As much as i dislike Cronin i can see why they would extend him but why in the blue hell would Billups get an extension ? WHY was this needed just pick up his fucking option and see IF maybe Billups turned the corner then after the offseason and ( hopefully ) a lot of roster moves he shows this season was just a stepping stone but why now. This is why Jody needs to sell the team OR fire Bert cause something in that ownership thing stinks just not sure who but I suspect Bert is the mastermind but Jody just have blame for allowing it unless PA made it clear he could not be fired unless he was deserved ( scandel etc )
This really makes me feel like it's a nothing burger... unless it's a huge pay raise which I highly doubt. You can fire a coach with two seasons left on a contract... no problem. So if Chauncey underperforms next season with a healthy roster, I'm pretty sure he'll get the hook... he'll likely get it after the season rather than during like if we had just picked up the option but as has been pointed out above, lame duck seasons for head coaches come with a wide array of problems. Not bad on the part of our management. It's not often that I get to say that, so that's nice.
Whoa! They basically picked up his option and added two seasons. It's not a 5 year deal or anything. You can easily fire a coach with two remaining seasons, teams do it all of the time. As other posters have pointed out lame duck season's for head coaches are a nightmare for any team. So I would get freaking out if it was an actual long term deal but it's not.
Congrats to Chauncey. Now let's see that algebra he talked about with Lamar Hurd, (which was a great interview by the way) I have to eat crow because I did not have faith in Chauncey until Deni broke out and Scoot showed growth. I'm more optimistic than I have been over the Chauncey era. I like front office and coaching stability as a blue print and can't stand revolving door franchises like the Kings or Suns that are constantly shuffling the deck and still have no rings.
I named the philosophies and said they were rarely being executed. Again, a movement offense is what he says... we see way too many possessions with zero off the ball movement in any meaningful ways. He likes plays, both isos and P&R that allow a playmaker to get into the teeth of the defense and either score or find the open guy to kick to... we see this but it puts a lot of onus on young players decision making skills, which can be and has been problematic. He talks a lot about high pressure, switching defense... this one happens and during those two stretches that cost us good lotto position it happened a lot and when I could forgot about squandered lottery odds, it was really fun to watch, however this approach takes a ton of discipline and when you have guys not bought in it will cost you a lot. Yeah his out of time out plays aren't inspiring, his rotations have been rough and the offense even the one he states that doesn't get implemented, is not imaginative. That being said, he is a good motivator, I've been happy with player development under him and I'm not sure he insists on playing Ayton, Grant and Simons but maybe you have some info I don't. I kind of got the impression that Joe had intended to trade those guys but may have had to pivot right at the deadline due to how well Chauncey had the team playing. I thought Chauncey was playing those guys to feature them but it was just a thought, I have no inside information to inform that opinion... pure speculation.
My point is this was not needed cause I doubt teams were beating down the Blazers door with requests to talk to him about a job so just pick up option and move on and hope for the best. Your right unless he got a huge pay raise it is just doting I's and crossing T's but still his record did not deserve this but I will say the following. Doing this HAS to mean the following things and if it does not then I stand by my post a couple minutes ago. --- ( post was my emotional reaction but I still believe it ) 1) The ownership group is willing to spend some money within reason 2) Cronin will have his hands untied more cause I do think he has had his hands tied to a degree in some of the deals via things he had to get done like shedding money , selling second round picks for cash etc. 3) Maybe bringing in one or two new coaches that can cover up for Billups flaws as a coach This put more pressure on Cronin for this offseason cause there is no way in hell we can run it back or just lose like Reath . Banton and Walker or something and just see how things go. I will not make this into a offseason thing but I will try and hope and maybe that is what I am doing but hoping this means we will see a lot of changes incoming this summer but we shall see.
Obviously Chauncey is loved by ownership, staff and the players. That's what Malone didn't have...unconditional trust. Success is a team sport. Chauncey gets that.
I think Ant is gone... I think he was gone at the deadline and some asshole who was the the best friend of our late owner shut down the move. So I think he'll get moved before the draft. I think Jerami can and should be moved but I've been stung too many times on that one to count on it. Deandre seems like he'd be easiest to move around the deadline with his expiring contract but who knows maybe Joe pulls that off this summer too. Chauncey's deal, especially if it only included a modest pay raise is pretty much the minimum you can do if you decide you want to retain a coach. Can't have a lame duck. It's hardly a ringing endorsement or anything like that. Billups Gets a Two Year Extension is how the headlines should have read... multi year contract is just as true but no where close to as specifically accurate.
If we go into next season with Simons/Grant in the starting lineup I’m done. Cronin has this summer to make moves. If they do nothing and we let it ride into next season I’m going to check out. Bert/Jody/Cronin aren’t serious about winning a title.
I can’t blame him for playing the vets but he did play them too much. I (we) will never know the impact the FO had on this. If the vets are gone I am willing to see what he does. If they aren’t and he plays them like this year, they are screwed. Does he get any credit for the rise of Tou and Deni? It seems you would have to, right? Both of those guys are now highly desired by knowledgeable fans around the league and probably more than a couple of gms too.
Monty Williams was fired in Phoenix (after 4 years and some success) with 3 years left on his contract and $20M. Monty Williams was fired from Detroit (after one year) with 5 years left on his contract and $65M. Congratulations to Billups, though I was hoping for a coaching change. I will celebrate Billups when he has a .500 record. [116-211 and counting]
