Well they have Kobe vs. MJ. So why not discuss which is better?
    Duncan or Garnett.
These 2 on the same team will own anybody but that most likely won't happen so they will have to confront each other for many years.

    Duncan's better.

    -More Success
    -Better leadership (close one)
    -Makes his teammates better
    -More skills/fundamentals
    -Less athleticism
    -More dominant
    -Better inside game
    -Worse jump shot (close one)

Now who wins most of the comparisons?

its a draw because duncan won his 2 rings with great role players speedy claxton, manu ginobli, stephen jackson, david robinson, samaki walker, tony parker etc. But Kg has more physcal gifts he is the only player i kno in the league that can really run all 5 postions and do them all pretty well he never got his role players until this yr so its a draw

You can't knock Garnett for not having as much success as Duncan, because he clearly had the inferior team the past few years. We saw what his team can do when they actually have talent other than just KG. KG makes his teammates better too, and he's a great leader- both vocally and by example. He's also more versatile- he's played all 5 positions for the Wolves. I think it's almost impossible to compare the 2 players and rank one above the other, because they're both great players with small advantages over the other in every category, but they balance out.

KG wasnt really surrounded with legit role players till last year and he responded by nto only takin em past the first round but one game away from the nba finals...

Give it time (2 years considering Twolves add missing peices to thier team) and KG will also win a ring

I also respect duncan....i believe both of them are tied in almost every aspect excpect maybe "charisma" and "emotion on the court"

KG expresses that both physically and in the game as well while duncan solely focuses on the game itself.....but that doesnt have anything to do with anything does it?

Well, can someone posts their career stats?
that wont do good either cuz KG didnt start blossoming till his 2nd year when the team's responsiblites started focusing on him

this is very difficult....I would tie them on EVERYTHING except for the "Rings" part but i dont believe "rings" shold be brought up till BOTH careers are done

therefore, in my opinion, they are tied

I seriously think this is a toss up. I don't believe you can choose who is better between these two players. They each do everything very well. Garnett, to me, is likely the more complete of the two, but, it doesn't make him better. Garnett can pretty much run every position on the court. He has a good jump shot, can dominate on the inside, and is a great defender. Duncan, to me, is about as good as it gets around the basket. He hardly misses. Not to mention, when it comes down to fundamentals, there might not be anyone better. He has the sweet bank shot, great defender, everything. But, the fact that each of these two players are so equal with everything, I just can't say one is better than the other. They each have things that they do better than the other, but, their just too close to say who is better.

    Kevin Garnetts Good qualities
    -athletic
    -more varsitible(can play all positions)
    - better overall player

From a post I made in the "G.O.A.T." thread.....it was in response to a person who labeled KG the greatest of the 2000 decade thus far.

    <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">
How is Garnett the best player? How do we determine if he is better than, say, Tim Duncan.

MVP's? Duncan has two. Garnett one.
Rings? Duncan has two. Garnett has zero.

Points since 2000-01 season? Garnett has 7368. Duncan 7331.
PPG since 2000-01 season? 23.35 for Duncan. 22.60 for Garnett

Rebounds since 2000-01 season? Garnett has 4143. Duncan 3941.
RPG since 2000-01 season? Garnett has 12.71. Duncan 12.55

    So....

Duncan and Garnett have nearly identical stats. In reality, the only thing that sets them apart in this comparisons, are the championships.

So I wouldn't say Garnett is the better player. IMO they are pretty damn close to being equal.

I would have to say it is a tie too. They shoot identical from the field but KG has always been a consistent freethrow shooter. KG gives a little more dimes but Tim Duncan and his team finds more ways to win.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">the only thing that sets them apart in this comparisons, are the championships.</div>

That pretty much sums that up. If they played a 100 times both would win 50.

I belive as a player KG is better. If you go by success duncan is. Look at the accomplishments. KG all star mvp, league mvp, and leader unquestioned of the minnesota twolves. Can do it all pass better than anyone at his position. Dribble like a point guard. Rebound like a center. Has the range of a swing man and the size of a power forward. He is a loyal and true competetor who will be good for a long time he is now on the uprise of his career while duncanhad his a few years back do to him spending all four years in college his came sooner then KG's.

Duncan now has 2 mvps, 2 titles, all star mvp, rookie of the year, and all those. He doesnt have the range of KG though imo. He can hit the jumper but not as consistantly as KG. He doesnt shoot free throws as well as KG also. He shoots under 70% so that isnt good. Duncan also you can say he doesnt have as much of a personality as KG so his talents are over looked.

KG imo is the better of the two the one I would pick if I was starting my team today. He is also the more marketable of the two the one that will put more people in the seats. Sell more shoes and jerseys. I dont know if that makes him better, but it makes him a bigger jewl to the team because it brings them more money.

KG also has had the most recent accomplishment of being voted mvp over duncan. So that shows he has surpaced duncan. He also was the all star mvp 2 years ago while duncan was 3 years ago and even then it was co-mvp with shaq.

It all depends on how you look at it and from were I am standing KG is better than duncan by a mile. Though you cant go wrong with either one.

IMO, KG is better, but i am open to hearing arguments for tim duncan being the better of the two... theres no doubt in my mind tho that these two are the two best players in the league...

Here is why i think KG is better in contrast to duncan:
although they score about the same amount of points, KG can do it in more ways... they both shoot the open jumper well, but KG has more range. And although duncan is better in the post (because he is stronger), KG has a solid post game, but can also resort to the fadeaway when he is pushed away from the hoop. When duncan is pushed away from the hoop, he usually kicks back out and reposts.

both men pass exceptionally well, but duncan is most effective passing out of the post, KG's overall court vision is superior to duncans.

Duncan is a stronger presence in the post on the defensive end when playing his man straight up, but KG has better help defense because of his quickness and still has good straight up man defense, and he can guard the quicker players on the perimeter.

And then theres the whole free throw thing (although i think its just mental for Duncan, since he did shoot 80% for a season before).

Tim Duncan is a better player IMO.KG and TD are very similar players but pound for pound I would have to go with Duncan.

Duncan is a better player in the post and these players are supposed to be big men,I like KG's game but it just seems like he takes to many jump shots for a PF when he should be bangin down low,but Tim Duncans game is everything sometimes he will shoot a mid range J and kiss it off the glass or other times he will be posting up people down low so IMO TD has a better offensive game.

Of course this is easy to say but it is the most important thing in basketball,TD has rings and KG doesnt untill KG gets a couple of rings I say Duncan is the better player.

It all comes down to their roles and how effective they are at it. Versatility is great and all, but if you were to pick a point guard for your team, would you rather have John Stockton or Baron Davis?

Kevin Garnett is more talented overall because of all the things he can do. He's more versatile than Timmy, no question. Personally though I'd prefer having Duncan because he's more effective at what he does. He's a better post player and post defender because of his strength, but also because of his moves. He's virtually unstoppable close to the hoop, and when you have a 7 footer, that's where you're gonna want him. If I hired KG I'd expect him to spend most of his time there, I wouldn't want him playing 2 guard even if he could. I'd want him to dominate the other forwards, take the attack the basket, crash the boards, reject shots. From what I've seen of the two, Duncan is better at those aspects of the game.

Tim does absolutely everything right. Holds the ball high, shoots it high, he's absolutely unblockable. KG can back up and hit the jumper when he's pushed back, whereas Duncan just passes it, but I think that's just a matter of mentality. Garnett feels as though he needs to do his absolute best, and do whatever it takes to win it for his team. Duncan feels that the post game is his job on the team, and should share the ball with his teammates whenever he can. Tim could hit the shots Garnett does if he really wanted to. It's just a matter of necessity. Duncan doesn't need to be as fast because he's so good in the post, and Garnett doesn't need to be as strong because he can beat his defenders in so many other ways. It's very hard to compare these two because they're so different. If we were comparing them as small forwards KG would win. But since we're comparing as power forwards (which I assume we are, because as I stated you're gonna want a 7 footer near the basket) TD beats KG.

    Hmmm...this one is tough..

So If I was a GM of a team:

Would I pick TD or KG?

    Hmm.....I'm gonna say KG.

Because he's more exciting and love his heart/determination. He plays every game like it is his last and with such great enthusiasm, and that is contagious. He has a great attitude, and will do anything to win a ballgame.

Way more athletic, and love his sweet fade-away jumper. Can also hit threes here and there. Awesome, and most versatile player in the league today.

Plus: I'll get more ratings/participation because he's a fan fav. and gets fans outta their seats.

Personality also shapes a team...People forget that..KG excites the crowd, teammates, coaches, etc.

Tim Duncan just excites his fans, not a whole lot.

    Player: KG
    Success: TD
    Fan Appeal: KG.

(sorry, I'm a bit tired and o lazy to put my opinion to words).

    IMO, its simply a draw.

if i were to choose one of them to start a new franchise, dunca would definitely be the pick. Just look at him, he's so textbook. Not bashing KG but duncan has all kind of values. difference between him and kg is that duncan plays more with his back to the basket. That is good because it shows that u have confidence in ur strength. Its obvious kg is quicker but coaches tend to like textbook stuff like posting up. It's not nearly as risky as blowing past someone. So duncan all the way, came from college, he team has more talent because his contract allows talent to come in. KG had a big ass contract b4 the one he signed before this season. they both mature but duncan is the main man.

People knock KG for not playing with his back to the basket enough, but the man is a SF with PF features... when he came in to the league, Sam Mitchell, Christian Laetner, and Tom Gugliotta played the PF role... Minnesota really hasnt had a good enough PF since those guys to allow KG to play SF and therefore he plays the PF position

I must say that KG is better because he never really had any good role player until this year. He still took them to the the playoffs without any good role players. He is so much more exciting and it seems like he plays with more Heart than Duncan.

I love this thread because I have a feeling in 10 years you will still be able to fight this one out. They both are great players who do alot for there teams, probably more than anyone else other than AI, The thing with duncan is he is hard to hate for any basketball reason because he is flawless, but being a fan of exciting basketball players I have to say KG has the edge, because there talent and skills are on par with eachother from what they bring to the table, even know each has different individual skills. That and KGs shoes are real pretty this year. If you notice it is hard to distinguish a true winner, its kinda like fighting out who is better bird or magic I just wish San Ann was still in our division. Oh well we have Denver now and they will have to do, so as of today I have discovered my tim duncan fan meter went up from 0 to 2 out of ten and my Carmelo Anthony went down from 7 out of ten to 0 out of ten. Because everyone knows you can't like your rival.

My people! This is no tie!

Success? I think out of all of these, the only one that's a tie is the success. Duncan is a 2-time MVP, Garnett is a 1-time. Duncan has 2 rings, but they aren't his rings. He was surrounded by talented players, and they were leading the team, not Duncan. While Garnett has no rings, he has brought a weak team out of a hole, and made franchise history by progressing past the 1st and 2nd round. Well, what about Cassel and Sprewell? Yes, but Garnett is very obviously the leader of the team, and was the man who really made it happen.

Leadership? Garnett wins that by 100% percent. Garnett is a very emotional and verbal leader. He's friends with every player on that roster, and makes sure everyone else is, giving the team a high level of chemsitry that shoes when they play. Garnett is the better leader because he is <u>always</u> capable of taking the whole team up on his back and carrying the team in whatever way needed. Duncan is a capable leader no doubt, but he is not in the calibur of KG.

Skills/Overall Game: Well, Garnett came straight out of Highschool, a mark of skill in its own. But lets compare their skills in a breakdown. Jumper: No doubt they both have a good jumper but KG's is better, no contest. Take a look at some of the shots that KG takes. He may be tripple-teamed and facing the opposite way to the basket, and throw it up while getting mobbed. And make it. Duncan also has his own array of amazing shots as well, but Garnett is extraordinary. A Power-Forward that can make clutch 3's like Reggie Miller? You don't get that often, well KG is the only one... Lets not forget that KG also specializes is his completely unstopable turnaround bank shot. That kills any and everyone. Not to mention he can back up whoever it is as much as he wants untill he's comfortable with the shot. Post: Give me a break guys, Duncan a better inside prescence than Garnett? That's ignorance right there. If I had to say Duncan had a best spot, it would be at mid-range or just outside the paint. Only one person can dominate the paint better than KG, and that's Shaq. KG will back anyone up. KG will dunk on anyone. Garnett also comes in as a rebounding machine. No one rebounds like him, Duncan has similiar numbers, but the energy and desire Garnett puts into very single rebound is unmatched. In addition, Garnett is a dynamicshot blocker. He makes some of the most unbelievable blocks, and it's not often that a player can bring fans to their feet with a blocked-shot.

A contest between the 2 in athleticism is a joke. Garnett is hand-down the most athletic player in the league. Garnett is quicker, and probably stronger than Duncan. There's not much to be said, Garnett is capable of taking all possible shots, and is capable of creating all possible shots. Obviously, the both of the are too big to play in the style of say, Allen Iverson, but Garnett's quickness makes him close. He is more versatile and can play in any way or form.

If you had to pick one to build a team around, you would be insane not to choose Garnett. Duncan has not had nearly as much success in terms and leadership. In fact Duncan has not often showed a lot of leadership to a high goal. He may be a leader in games, but he is probably yet to be an accomplished team leader. While on the other hand, Garnett is veteran team leader and is very skilled at it. Garnett is definetely a better choice to be the base of a team.

From the skills, to the success, to the level of excitement the player brings to the court, Garnett takes the gold. Whether by a small or large margin Garnett is the better in these categories. Garnett is 100% the better player, but Duncan has only one thing that Garnett doesn't, 2 little peices of jewelry.
