Abramovich Offers Chelsea Job To Van Basten
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has allegedly offered the manager's job at Stamford Bridge to Marco Van Basten.
Although a Dutchman was widely expected to be invited to take over the team at Chelsea following the departure of Jose Mourinho, the smart money was on Russian national coach Guus Hiddink.
Now, according to The Sun newspaper, it is Van Basten who has been targeted by Chelsea's billionaire owner Roman Abramovich.
The Sun claims to have learned that Abramovich made his move for the Holland national team manager at the weekend, and is now awaiting the former Milan striker's response.
Van Basten was seen sitting in the next row to Abramovich at Old Trafford on Sunday as Chelsea lost 0-2 to Manchester United in Avram Grant's first game as team manager in succession to Mourinho.
According the Sun's report, ex-Real Madrid manager Fabio Capello let slip the 'secret' by revealing that Chelsea's technical director, Frank Arnesen, had recommended the legendary Dutchman to Abramovich.
Capello said: “Arnesen wants Van Basten to take over and has already recommended Marco to Abramovich. Frank and Marco know each other well from their time in Dutch football.”
Van Basten, 40, had privately insisted that it was mere coincidence he was sitting close to Abramovich on Sunday, saying that he was there as a gusrt of United's.
However, Van Basten is said to have spoken at length with Chelsea’s hierarchy about an offer to succeed Grant, who was promoted last week in the wake of after Mourinho’s exit.
Van Basten apparently asked for a few days to consider whether or not to acceot the job immediately. A 'close friend' was quoted as saying: “Marco is faced with a huge dilemma. He has to think things over and see whether he could leave Holland.”
The Netherlands team are currently joint top with Romania of Euro 2008 qualifying Group G.
If the story is true, it places a large question-mark over Grant's future, particularly as the Chelsea hierarchy went out of their way to stressthat the Israeli had not been appointed as a stop-gap or to keep the seat warm for a high-profile permanent appointment.

Basten on the left and Gus Hiddink on the right. Well I mentioned Hiddink on another thread remember, and giving it to Van Basten wouldn't be bad either. He was a hell of a player and should be a great coach as well. Young too.
