LIVERPOOL, England (AFP) - Liverpool co-owner George Gillett insisted Monday that Rafael Benitez had his full backing to continue as manager of the English Premier League giants.

Benitez has become increasingly frustrated over what he fears may be a lack of funds to buy new players and tie down Javier Mascherano, currently on loan, to a permanent deal during the January transfer window.

And his mood would not have been helped by seeing his team slip to a 1-0 home defeat to arch-rivals Manchester United here on Sunday.

Spanish boss Benitez, whose side are now 10 points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, claimed Gillett and fellow American co-owner Tom Hicks did not understand the European transfer market.

But Gillett, who together with Hicks had a meeting with Benitez after Sunday's set-back at Anfield, insisted all was well between the Liverpool owners and their manager despite the transfer policy row.

"This wasn't supposed to happen, but it has happened, and now the focus has to be on finding a common platform to continue our co-operation," he told Monday's Liverpool Echo.

"Rafa is the one we want as manager further on, and we have faith in him. I've been married over 40 years and have first-hand knowledge about how to solve an argument.

"We concentrated on getting an overview over the situation, and I felt we accomplished that."

Liverpool, who last week beat Marseille 4-0 to advance to the last 16 of the lucrative European Champions League, play Chelsea on Wednesday in the quarter-finals of England's League Cup.

lol you gotta love that. Scousers nicking their God's stevie G's stuff. But i don't think any players would leave if Rafa does. Look at the amount of players that threantened to leave Chelski. Lumpard, Carvahlo, Essien, Ferraira etc. But then again they're like Moths to a flame when it comes to their Wages.
