Rise of the Zombies -- 3/10 -- Lots of locations and some known actors don't make this derivative zombie movie anything new or exciting. Danny Trejo will be in ANYTHING.

Super -- 8/10 -- Small-budget counterpart to Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass. Super is original and has good performances. Should've done better than it did--hopefully DVD and Blu-Ray sales made up for a lackluster box-office performance.

Thumbs down Re: Rate the Last Movie You Saw

Batman: The Dark Knight Rises was about a 4/10. The fact that Catwoman, "Robin" & Bane were able to figure out who Batman was from the jump was pathetic. Also, Batman couldn't fight Bane at all in the beginning but all a sudden he comes back and can deliver blows. I feel this last installment of the cool Batman series was very disappointing and left a bad taste. The producers really just couldn't seem to top Batman The Dark Knight with the introduction of Joker. Boooo!

Avengers was a 10/10. I'm a returning die-hard Marvel Superheroes fan and this movie resurrected my love for it all. The action was intense, lines weren't cheesy and I seriously can't wait for Avengers 2. Marvel is back on the map!

Skyfall (IMAX) -- 8/10 -- I liked it. I thought it was the most enjoyable film of the new series. Campy and fun. Javier Bardem was hilarious.

Django Unchained -- 10/10 -- Likely the last of Tarentino's revenge series of films, Django represents the most traditional story arc he's told but it never feels well worn or cliched. In typical fashion it contains very tense moments, very funny moments, and a lot of tremendous dialogue. Waltz stands out, obviously, in a role a little more subtle than The Jew Hunter but equally as riveting. DiCaprio is hammy but not terribly distracting.

Dredd (3D) -- 8/10 -- A modern take on the Die Hard style of action movie. Very lean film. Blows through under 90-minutes in no time. The action sequences are over the top without being exhausting, back-stories for characters are set up quickly and relevant, foreshadowing leads to satisfying call-backs, and Karl Urban somehow delivers a good performance despite having a mask on for literally the entire film. I liked it. Loses a point for the very first word of dialogue being Urban pronouncing America as "Ameri-kerr". Dude, really?

Apparently Tarantino will make a third and final "re-imagining history" flick FWIW.

Also saw Django, I'd give it an 8.5/10.

^ Yeah I guess Kill Bill 3 is on again so he'll have at least one more revenge movie with the tables getting turned on Bea this time.

The Killer (1989) -- 6/10 -- I got tired of hearing about this one without ever having seen it. While the gunfights are exciting and well put together, as you'd expect, the sappy story line and a truly pathetic female lead (only woman in the film) keep it from being on the same level as Hard Boiled. A run of awful American films in the 00's behind him, Woo is now back in Hong Kong where I hope he can figure out what went wrong (casting!) stateside and get back to what made him a legend there.

13 Assassins -- 8/10 -- Takashi Miike's take on Seven Samurai revolves around a group of samurai reluctantly forced to assassinate the sadistic brother of the Shogun before he plunges Japan back into war on a whim. The story is very simple with the badly outnumbered group facing down the Lord and his personal guard in a fortified village. As you might expect from Takashi, the violent imagery can be shocking but it never gets in the way of the story. If you like Seven Samurai or The Magnificent Seven you'll probably like this one, so long as you have the stomach for it.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey -- 8/10 -- As a nerd I relish any time I get to spend in Peter Jackson's take on Middle Earth. I can understand why people are calling this series bloated--The Hobbit isn't a very long book so Jackson has incorporated material from LOTR and other stories and poems by Tolkien to fill it out--but I can't get enough. I didn't watch this in 48fps or 3D so I have no take on whether that adds to or detracts from the film.
