The top quarterback in the Class of 2009, Matt Barkley ended his recruitment early, giving a verbal commitment to Southern Cal on January 23. Barkley hails from Mater Dei High School, the same school that produced former star quarterback at USC, Matt Leinart. He was the first player in school history to start at quarterback on the varsity team as a freshman. Barkley was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year and won the Pete Maxwell Award at the conclusion of his junior season this past fall. He accumulated an impressive 3,560 and 35 touchdowns while leading his team to the Trinity League Title. His competition in California is some of the toughest in the country, so you know his numbers are legit.
Barkley excels in virtually every aspect of the game and has already mastered the quarterback position. He has a terrific arm and is able to make basically any throw he wants. His pocket presence is outstanding and he shows great patience under pressure; he's never forced into making a throw, thereby avoiding costly interceptions. His mobility is above average for a guy of his size and he has no problem making risky throws and completing them. If there's one area that Matt needs to improve on, it's his tendency to lock onto one receiver on certain plays. While he's able to get away with this on the high school level, it's definitely something he'll need to work on throughout his senior year. All-in-all, there's no doubt Matt has all the tools needed to be the next great QB at Southern Cal.
