Ok, so I'm starting to get you guys to notice the Russians. In turn, you should be looking at the Russian Premier League as well since there are so many ways to keep track. Wikipedia, official team websites, highlights, etc. CSKA Moscow for instance has their own online TV network where you can watch dozens of highlights. Most teams' websites are also in English so again, no worries about not understanding what's going on. I will rank clubs based on talent and how "big" they really are.

    <div align="center">[IMG]

    Short name: FC Zenit
Full name: Football Club Zenit Saint Petersburg
    Russian: ФК "Зенит" Санкт-Петербург
    Nickname(s): Sine-Belo-Golubye (Blue-White-Sky Blues)
    Founded: 1925
    Stadium: Petrovsky Stadium (21,570 capacity)

    Manager: Dick Advocaat (Netherlands)
Notable players: Andrei Arshavin (Russia), Pavel Pogrebnyak (Russia), Anatoliy Tymoschuk (Ukraine), Vyacheslav Malafeev (Russia), Nicolas Lombaerts (Belgium), Aleksandr Anyukov (Russia), Konstantin Zyrianov (Russia), Tomáš Hubočan (Slovakia), Fatih Tekke (Turkey), Kim Dong-Jin (Korea Republic), Lee Ho (Korea Republic) and Viktor Fayzulin (Russia)

Notes: You'll find that most of Zenit's players are full-time national team representatives. A lot of diversity in the team as well. Anatoliy Tymoschuk is the captain of the squad and is a regular national team player for Ukraine. The vice-captain is Russia's number two keeper, Vyacheslav Malafeev. Andrei Arshavin is the best Russian player at the moment and the best player in the Russian Premier League, period. His amazing vision and dribbling is what sets him apart. Other notable Russians are Pavel Pogrebnyak, Aleksandr Anyukov and Konstantin Zyrianov who are all currently at EURO 2008. Zenit are current UEFA Cup champions. Noted this past season for a dominant 4-0 win over Bayern Munich with two of their top players missing! Another interesting note is that FC Zenit is tightly connected with the turbulent political history of Saint Petersburg - Petrograd - Leningrad, Russia. In 1897 the first football match in Russia was held in Saint Petersburg on Vasilyevsky Ostrov. An unofficial game between the local English team "Ostrov" and the local Russian team "Petrograd" which the English team won 6 : 0. The players of those local teams were amateurs and loosely associated with each other.

    Short name: PFC CSKA Moscow
Full name: Professional Football Club Central Sports Club of Army Moscow
Russian: Профессиональный футбольный клуб ЦСКА Москва
    Nickname(s): Koni (Horses); Red-blue; Army-men; Red-army-men
    Founded: 1911
    Stadium: Luzhniki Stadium (84,745 capacity)

    Manager: Valery Gazzaev (Russia)
Notable players: Igor Akinfeev (Russia), Jô (Brazil), Vágner Love (Brazil), Dudu Cearense (Brazil), Yuri Zhirkov (Russia), Sergei Ignashevich (Russia), Aleksei Berezutskiy (Russia), Vasili Berezutskiy (Russia), Daniel Carvalho (Brazil), Evgeni Aldonin (Russia), Deividas Semberas (Lithuania), Chidi Odiah (Nigeria), Dawid Janczyk (Poland), Luboš Kalouda (Czech Republic), Ramón Osni Moreira Lage (Brazil), Pavel Mamayev (Russia) and Alan Dzagoev (Russia)

Notes: CSKA Moscow is loaded with unbelievable talent. Not only the local national team boys igor Akinfeev, Yuri Zhirkov, Sergei Ignashevich and the Berezutskiy twins, but also three of the best Brazilian players in the World. All three of which have been transfer targets by English Prem clubs for years now. Those three of course being Jô, Love and Dudu. Combine their amazing established talents with one of the best youth programs out there and you have a certified monster club on the verge of Champions League competition. They've already won the UEFA Cup not too long ago. Another interesting note is that CSKA wasoriginally nicknamed "Stables" (конюшня), presumably because their first training facilities were located in the building that previously was Prince Yusupov's stable. It was considered offensive, but later it was transformed into its consonant "Horses" (кони), and currently this is used by players and fans as a self-name, along with other variants such as "Army Men" (армейцы) and "Red-Blues" (красно-синие). The club also has several branches including Russia's most successful basketball and ice hockey teams of the same name.

    Short name: FC Lokomotiv Moscow
Full name: Football Club Lokomotiv Moscow
    Russian: Футбольный клуб "Локомотив" Москва
Nickname(s): Loko; Parovoz (Steam Locomotive); Parovozy (Steam Locomotives); Krasno-zelyonyye (Red-Greens); Zheleznodorozhniki (Railroaders)
    Founded: 1923
    Stadium: Lokomotiv Stadium (28,800 capacity)

    Manager: Rashid Rakhimov (Tajikistan)
Notable players: Dmitri Torbinsky (Russia), Dmitri Sychev (Russia), Ivan Pelizzoli (Italy), Răzvan Cociş (Romania), Marián Had (Slovakia), Dramane Traoré (Mali), Fininho (Brazil), Dmitri Sennikov (Russia), Emir Spahić (Bosnia & Herzegovina), Alexander Samedov (Russia), Sergei Gurenko (Belarus), Peter Odemwingie (Nigeria), Malkhaz Asatiani (Georgia), Davit Mujiri (Georgia), Guillermo Pereyra (Argentina) and Sergei Efimov (Russia)

Notes: Another team made up of diverse cultures. Loko have plenty of national team players from several countries, but most notable of all of them being Dmitri Sychev, Dmitri Torbinsky and Răzvan Cociş. Sychev; the only thing I can write is that he's an amazing forward that hasn't had his opportunities at EURO 2008 thus far. Torbinsky is considered the "Brazilian Russian" due to his amazing footwork and agility. This is due to him growing up as a futsal player first. His vision is second only to Andrei Arshavin of Zenit. Cociş is considered one of Romania's top players along with Adrian Mutu and Cristian Chivu. When Cociş was issued another yellow in the match against Italy in EURO 2008, many people noted that Romania would have a difficult time against the Dutch without him since he was banned for the match. They lost 2-0 without him. He is a force in the midfield for any team. Ivan Pelizzoli is actually considered Italy's third best keeper by most, second best by others. He left Italy in hopes to rejuvenate his career in Russia. Another interesting note is that the club was founded in 1923 as Club of the October Revolution and was renamed to Kazanka (Moskovskaya-Kazanskaya Zh.D) in 1931, and eventually to Lokomotiv in 1936.

    Short name: FC Spartak Moscow
Full name: Football Club Spartak Moscow
    Russian: Футбольный клуб "Спартак" Москва
Nickname(s): Myaso (The Meat); Svinyi (The Pigs); Red-whites
    Founded: 1922
    Stadium: Luzhniki Stadium (84,745 capacity)

    Manager: Stanislav Cherchesov (Russia)
Notable players: Roman Pavlyuchenko (Russia), Vladimir Bystrov (Russia), Stipe Pletikosa (Croatia), Mozart (Brazil), Maksym Kalynychenko (Ukraine), Yegor Titov (Russia), Martin Stranzl (Austria), Radoslav Kováč (Czech Republic), Martin Jiránek (Czech Republic), Malik Fathi (Germany), Welliton (Brazil), Nikita Bazhenov (Russia), Serghei Covalciuc (Moldova), Cristian Maidana (Argentina), Roman Shishkin (Russia), Aleksandr Prudnikov (Russia) and Egor Filipenko (Belarus)

Notes: Spartak had been known to collect top Russian players and veterans, but have more recently taken a new step towards signing amazing youth. The biggest signings are of course being one of Argentina's top youngsters Cristian Maidana and Russia's top young striker Aleksandr Prudnikov. The kids are in great company though with names like Roman Pavlyuchenko (two goals in EURO 2008 so far), Croatia's number one keeper Stipe Pletikosa, Brazilian deep playmaker Mozart Santos Batista Júnior, veteran captain Yegor Titov and another Russian youth Roman Shishkin. Martin Stranzl was also called up for EURO 2008 and played fairly well for co-hosts Austria. Another interesting note is that Spartak was entitled to place a golden star on its badge in 2003 in commemoration of having won five Russian championships with this having been achieved in 1997. Their arch rivals are CSKA Moscow and matches between the two are often considered to be the fiercest in all of Europe. Spartak has never had its own stadium and the team has played in various Moscow stadiums throughout its history and even once an exhibition match on Red Square. Currently, the club's home ground is the 5-star Luzhniki Stadium which officially belongs to another Moscow club, Torpedo, who play in the First Division (second level of football). Luzhniki Stadium is most recently noted as hosting the 2008 Champions League Final between Manchester United and Chelsea.</div>

    Short name: FC Dynamo Moscow
Full name: Football Club Dynamo Moscow
    Russian: Динамо Москва
    Nickname(s): White-blues, Menty (Cops)
    Founded: 1923
    Stadium: Dynamo Stadium (36,540 capacity)

    Manager: Andrey Kobelev (Russian)
Notable players: Igor Semshov (Russia), Denis Kolodin (Russia), Aleksandr Kerzhakov (Russia), Aleksandr Tochilin (Russia), Daniel Miguel Alves Gomes (Portugal), Leandro Fernández (Argentina), Dmitri Khokhlov (Russia), Ruslan Pimenov (Russia), Žydrūnas Karčemarskas (Lithuania), Tsvetan Genkov (Bulgaria), Andrei Karpovich (Kazakhstan), Cicero Semedo (Portugal), Jovan Tanasijević (Montenegro/Kosovo) and Marcin Kowalczyk (Poland)

Notes: Dynamo doesn't rely on a team of big stars to compete as their management often puts together the right formula to compete strongly for the Premier League title. The only big stars of this club are Russian internationals Igor Semshov and Denis Kolodin, former Sevilla star Aleksandr Kerzhakov, Danny and Leandro Fernández. They have a solid selection of youth prospects, but are so well constructed there isn't a wealth of one amount of players over the other. They don't have a strong goalkeeper at the moment, but Žydrūnas Karčemarskas in good enough between the pipes for now. He's a young Lithuanian national team player that may very well turn into a star some day given his amount of playing time. Another interesting note is that the club's ground is the historic Dynamo Stadium in Petrovsky Park, which seats 36,540. Despite not having won a league title in over thirty years the club still has a quite extensive, though aging, fan base. Other active notable former players include Portugal's Maniche and Costinha and Greece defender Giourkas Seitaridis. The three players were signed by the club from FC Porto a few seasons ago, but have moved on since then.

    Short name: FC Rubin Kazan
Full name: Football Club Rubin Kazan
    Russian: Футбольный клуб *убин Казань
    Nickname(s): Rubin
    Founded: 1958
    Stadium: Central Stadium (30,133 capacity)

    Manager: Kurban Berdyev (Turkmenistan)
Notable players: Sergei Semak (Russia), Cristian Ansaldi (Argentina), Savo Milošević (Serbia), Gökdeniz Karadeniz (Turkey), Andrei Fyodorov (Uzbekistan), Aleksei Rebko (Russia), Lasha Salukvadze (Georgia), Serhiy Rebrov (Ukraine), Gabriel Fernando Atz (Brazil), Alexandru Gatcan (Moldova/Russia), Dato Kvirkvelia (Georgia), Nukri Revishvili (Georgia), Sergei Ryzhikov (Russia), Stjepan Tomas (Croatia), Christian Noboa (Ecuador) and Aleksandr Ryazantsev (Russia)

Notes: Rubin Kazan are quickly becoming a new Russian power and will likely be the next UEFA Cup contenders. Not this upcoming season anyway, but in 2009/10 for certain. They have built themselves a strong unit of veteran players, mixed with former nobodies who have quickly (and amazingly) become somebodies. The team is currently leading the Russian Premier League after finishing tenth place the previous season and are five points ahead of second-placed Spartak Moscow. Sergei Semak and Gökdeniz Karadeniz are their biggest stars, but most people should be familiar with Serbian striker Savo Milošević. Perhaps their biggest prospect though has to be Cristian Ansaldi. The Argentine is used in all youth programs for the South American team and recently was called up for a friendly, but wasn't used. He's only 21 and it will be difficult seeing a still relatively unknown to foreigners club like Kazan keeping the defender after this season. However, Kazan are filthy rich, so keep that in mind. Another interesting note is that the club is based in the city of Kazan of the Tatarstan republic and were previously named Iskra from 1958 to 1964 and Rubin-TAN from 1992 to 1993.</div>

    Short name: Krylia Sovetov
Full name: Professional Football Club Krylia Sovetov Samara
Russian: Профессиональный футбольный клуб "Крылья Советов" Самара
    Nickname(s): Perya (Feathers); Krysy (Rats)
    Founded: 1942
    Stadium: Metallurg Stadion (33,220 capacity)

    Manager: Leonid Slutsky (Russian)
Notable players: Maksim Shatskikh (Uzbekistan), Timofei Kalachev (Belarus), Denis Kovba (Belarus), Oleg Ivanov (Russia), Ivan Taranov (Russia), Oh Beom-Seok (Korea Republic), Jiři Jarošik (Czech Republic), Yevgeny Savin (Russia), Aleksey Skvernyuk (Belarus) and Andrey Tikhonov (Russia)

Notes: Krylia Sovetov are a more traditional Russian club. They keep a stronghold on their youth programs and try to keep the Russian team shape instead of using too many foreigners. This isn't a bad thing though as they are very competitive and build up plenty of Russian youth for the future of the country's national team. The team suffers from a lack of strong goalkeepers though, so they had to bring in Nikolay Kalancha of Moldova on loan from Zimbru Chişinău. The club's biggest signing, perhaps in the last decade has got to be Maksim Shatskikh. The Uzbek striker is a force and should prove vital in the team's push for the Russian Premier League title. He's a scoring machine on the national level as well, netting 29 goals in 38 matches so far for his country. The team also has a strong Belarus interest. Timofei Kalachev and Denis Kovba alone are often praised as the best Belarus national team players after Aliaksandr Hleb. Before Arsenal shown interest in Hleb, his original interest was to likely join Krylia Sovetov with his friends or stay in Germany. Another interesting note is that the club currently does not have a chairman. Ownership is on the buying block and the fans are looking at a Russian billionaire to be the successor.

    Short name: FC Amkar Perm
Full name: Football Club Amkar Perm
    Russian: Футбо́льный клуб "Амка́р" Пермь
    Nickname(s): Red-blacks
    Founded: 1994
    Stadium: Zvezda Stadium (20,000 capacity)

    Manager: Miodrag Božović (Montenegro)
Notable players: Vladimir Gabulov (Russia), Georgi Peev (Bulgaria), Vyacheslav Krendelev (Turkmenistan), Nikola Drinčić (Montenegro), Mikhail Afanasyev (Belarus), Tomislav Dujmović (Croatia), Zahari Sirakov (Bulgaria) and Arthur Stepanyan (Armenia)

Notes: Amkar are another Russian club not made up of superstar players, but they still get the job done. They're often up and down in the standings, but in the current Premier League season the club is sitting in third after only ten matches. They have a few notable national team players, the best being Vladimir Gabulov who is currently representing Russia at EURO 2008. Georgi Peev is a Bulgaria national football team regular, Vyacheslav Krendelev is the best Turkmen player in the World and Nikola Drinčić is trying to solidify his place as a regular for Montenegro, who are fairly new to the UEFA federation and still looking for their best eleven. Another interesting note is that Amkar perm are a fairly new club, only having been established in 1992 and playing their first match on May 5, 1993. The team as originally assembled of workers of Perm Mineral Fertilizers factory. The name Amkar is created from the words "ammoniac" and "carbamide", the main products of the factory. The club didn't turn professional until 1995.

    Short name: FC Tom' Tomsk
Full name: Football Club Tom' Tomsk
    Russian: Футбольный клуб Томь Томск
    Nickname(s): Tom'
    Founded: 1957
    Stadium: Trud Stadium (15,000 capacity)

    Manager: Valeriy Petrakov (Russia)
Notable players: Hrvoje Vejić (Croatia), Valeri Klimov (Russia), Aleksei Bugayev (Russia), Sergei Pareiko (Estonia), Goran Maznov (FYR Macedonia), Đorđe Jokić (Serbia), Valeriu Catinsus (Moldova) and Veniamin Mandrykin (Russia)

Notes: Tom' are considered to be one of the underrated clubs in Russia. Once a third division regular for a decade, they are now a Premier League mid-table contender. Hrvoje Vejić has shown so much promise on this team by managing to make his way onto the Croatian national football team for EURO 2008. Valeri Klimov is the team's most underrated player as despite his successes as a midfielder he still has yet to be capped for Russia. Now at 34 years old, it isn't likely he will ever play for his country before retirement. Aleksei Bugayev is no stranger to success as he won the Russian Super Cup with Lokomotiv Moscow in 2005 and still has yet to reach his prime. Forward Goran Maznov has been a great pairing with Goran Pandev on the FYR Macedonia national football team. Another interesting note is that the team has changed their name eight times before finally deciding on FC Tom' Tomsk in 1988. The team also has a great contract with adidas for eastern Russia advertising purposes. Tom' are currently outfitted in adidas' Golpe design.

    Short name: FC Saturn Ramenskoe
Full name: State-Owned Enterprise of the Moscow Region Football Club Saturn Moscow Region
Russian: Государственное учреждение Московской области Футбольный клуб "Сатурн" Московская область
    Nickname(s): Aliens (Inoplanetyane)
    Founded: 1946
    Stadium: Saturn Stadium (16,726 capacity)

    Manager: Gadzhi Gadzhiev (Russia)
Notable players: Alexei Eremenko, Jr. (Estonia), Vadim Yevseyev (Russia), Aleksei Igonin (Russia), Baffour Gyan (Ghana), Antonin Kinský (Czech Republic), Andrei Karyaka (Russia), Dmitri Loskov (Russia), Peter Petráš (Slovakia), Zelão (Brazil), Farkhod Vasiev (Tajikistan), Benoit Angbwa (Cameroon), Marko Topić (Bosnia & Herzegovina) and Illiasu Shilla (Ghana)

Notes: Saturn are a famous club in Russia who have had trouble keeping a place in top flight football up until 1999. Since then they have been regular mid-table contenders, but last season they managed to climb into fifth place. That was their best position since 2001 and 2002 where they finished sixth both seasons. They're not known for major international players, but Alexei Eremenko would argue that he's one of the best in the World. He's definitely one of the most underrated, that's for sure. He once wanted to make his way into the Italian league system, but despite success with US Lecce, he left for his father's old club Saturn in 2006. He's one of the best Finnish players right now, but also holds Russian citizenship due to his ancestry. Andrei Karyaka is a scoring machine in the midfield and could be considered the second best player at the club right now. Antonin Kinský has been the number two keeper behind fellow countryman Petr Čech for a long time now, but is reliable and worthy in his own right. Other notable players are club captain Aleksei Igonin, Ghana national football team regular Baffour Gyan and Vadim Yevseyev who is not so much famous for his skill, but his big mouth in post-match interviews. Every team should have a bad boy I suppose and he's the profanity master. Another interesting note is that one of Russia's greatest players of all-time, Viktor Onopko (109 Russia caps and 7 goals), ended his career with Saturn in 2005. The club was previously oddly called Saturn-REN TV from February 2002 to January 2004 due to a sponsorship deal. In 2006 the club beat a record of draw matches played in Russian Premier League football during one season - 16 times in 30 matches.</div>

Something interesting to look at is how far east FC Luch-Energiya Vladivostok are located from the other clubs in the Premier League. Imagine the traveling time for the club and their visitors to Dynamo Stadium of Vladivostok.

Another club in an interesting location is FC Terek Grozny. They're located in Grozny, Chechnya. The entire Chechen Republic has been a war hot spot for independence from Russia.

Wagner Love is one of my favorite Brazilian players.

Too bad we don't get the Russian league here in the states.

My father told me that the Soviet Union (back in the days) had some great teams, and at times were unbeatable.

On another note, my father had Russian as a second language during school (when communism ruled the balkans lol).

We currently get Russian Premier League highlights during Fox Soccer Report on Fox Soccer Channel. Then there is open communication to have Premier League matches once per week on British and American television by 2009/10.

I read about the unbeatable teams from Russia, but the seat of power is heading back as we speak.

Watch the report on weekends to see Russian Premier League highlights. Remember that the league is on hold due to the EURO 2008 tournament though. It starts up again in mid July.

    Thanks CK and MainEvent.

Choosing a club to support takes time, so don't rush. Check out team highlights and their official websites to see how well you can connect with each one. Whatever feels best go with that club. Anyone else looking to get into the RPL?

BTW, if anyone is interested in picking up their favorite club's jersey, you don't have to order from Russia and pay an arm and a leg for shipping costs. Just go to Subside Sports.

    UK Customers

    USA Customers

    Canadian Customers

I don't think they have any of the new gear in just yet, but they should sometime soon. Last season they had almost every club's jersey available. Remember though that Russian jerseys aren't cheap because Subside has to import them. They still save you money big time though on shipping charges. Roughly up to 80 US dollars!

I really like that winged creature on the Rubin Kazan shirts.

I've almost made my decision. [IMG]

I didn't even realize they were in 1st. One thing I am confused about is, on that shirt website it says the shirts available for Rubin are 2006/2007...

EDIT: I'm wrong, Kazan released a new 50th anniversary kit! Check it out on the official website. Pictures of players pop up in the upper left corner.
