Cleveland Cavaliers remain intact as NBA trade deadline passes without a deal

TORONTO -- Wally Sczcerbiak sat and watched the giant digital clock inside the gym at Humber College this afternoon until it struck 3. Then he smiled and relaxed for the first time in what seemed like weeks.

Despite lots of talks and several potentially high-profile deals, the Cavaliers ultimately stuck with their plan to stand pat at the NBA trading deadline. The team was simply unwilling to give up any of its valued assets, and that turned out to be a stumbling block in getting any sort of major deals done.

Most of the talks today centered onund Phoenix center Shaquille O'Neal. It was thought the Cavs were offering Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic, but the Suns were asking for Szczerbiak. The Cavs then tried to find another team to get involved, but couldn't make anything work.

Szczerbiak said he had been a little bit nervous the last couple days and was reading newspaper and Internet reports. His reaction matched that of the rest of his teammates, who were lighthearted and joking around once the deadline finally came and went.

Shortly after the deadline the team piled into its buses and left for the airport on the way to Milwaukee . . . and the rest of the season.

Injury updates: The Cavs did not have a full-contact practice today and chose not to change the status of guard Delonte West (doubtful) and Ben Wallace (questionable) for tomorrow's game at Milwaukee, but West looked very good in the workout and there is a sense that he's very close to returning to action. Wallace was only able to shoot with his left hand, indicating he may miss some more time.

Mo Williams missed practice with an upset stomach, but it shouldn't keep him out of the game against the Bucks.

I can't believe they didn't do anything with Wally's contract. I agree with Dream, the Cavs need one more piece to win it all.

I'm surprised they didn't do anything. If throwing in Wally instead of Wallace would've guaranteed Shaq, I would've done it.

The Cavs GM insists his discussions with the Suns regarding Shaq never reached the serious stage. Serious or not, we’re just glad they talked. In the online world, “T’Wolves trade for Shelden Williams” doesn’t click quite as well as “Shaq joining LeBron?”

Ferry will probably catch heat from some Cavs fans for not using Wally Szczerbiak’s expiring contract to land an upgrade. In fact, he already has caught some: “BOOOOoooooooooooo, Ferry!” read one post in the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s blog. “So we’re keeping the highest paid scrub off the bench on our books this year? Nice, Danny.”

In truth, the Cavs are deep enough and talented enough to contend for the title, as is. Provided they also stay healthy enough.
