So I know we have a few computer people on here, so I have a question. Pretty much all my life I've been a PC/Windows guy, and never liked it. I took some computer classes in hs and the teachers there HATED macs. Called them fish tanks. So that mentality was always in my head. Now I came to school and I met a friend who has bcome like my best friend here, and he has the sweetest computer, and it's a mac. I've been thinking about getting a new computer, as my laptop is now showing why it was so cheap. Any suggestions or stories about macs? Better then PC's? I just love his computer, but idk if he ever runs into software issues like video games or any other programs that are more Windows popular. Thanks guys.

Macs used to be pieces of crap, but in the last few years, they've really started to become a lot better than windows machines.

You need to make sure you can play one of these discs:

I used to be a Mac guy back in the day, switched to PCs about 10 years ago, and just this year tried to switch back...

Personally, I didn't like Mac again and ended up selling the Macbook Pro I bought. Its a few things - no forward delete key seems small, but to me is big. No ctrl-alt-delete, basically, everything I had spent 10 years learning about Windows was useless. The Mac version of Office sucked too, in my opinion.

Now, it may be that I'm an old fart and didnt want to learn new tricks. True, that. Lots of people of course love their Macs, but for me, it was too much work with little payoff.

You can boot off the CD and try it before you install it.

Eh, I like Kubuntu but for some reason Ubuntu runs smoother on my computer.

And you don't need to put it on a CD to try it. You can install it under windows, which is pretty freaking cool, or you can get Unetbootin and put it on a flash drive. The only problem with that is you need to set your BIOS to boot from a UBS drive, however, it's much faster then running it from a CD/DVD.

macs are good but expensive. the 24" one is only 1500 now...but shit, you can get a PC to do the same shit for like 400 bucks for the most part.

I love my Mac! I've always been a Mac user.

I also agree with the suggestion of ubuntu/kubuntu.

that's my thoughts on it at this point. Macs are nice...but you can get a PC with equal specs for less usually.

What are you planning on doing with it? A lot of programs are available for both, but you can always look into that some before you make the jump.

Wow. For a little more than $1500, I got a kick ass desktop with a 30" monitory. Runs Kubuntu :)

    Specs?

Q66 CPU (quad core, 2.4 GHz overclocked to 3GHz)
    8G RAM
    Raptor 10,000 RPM 150G drive
250G slower drive for mass storage
    nVidia GT8800 graphics card

    The monitor does 2500x1600 (roughly)

Get a Mac! They run great, look good, get no viruses, can run Windows, Apple has awesome customer support and they last a long time. You also get iLife 09 which is a nice software bundle that comes with every Mac for free. I work for Apple so if you have any more questions feel free!

Buy a $350 PC laptop. When it breaks in 10 months, buy another $350 PC laptop. When that one breaks in another 10 months, buy a third PC laptop.

Over 30 months, you'll have spent about $1050, which is also roughly the price of one entry level Mac.

But the second and third laptops will feature much more modern hardware than the Mac (assuming the Mac even lasts 30 months, which would be fantastic for any laptop of any brand).

And along the way you'll spend about 20% less to run much of the same software, and you'll have about twice the overall selection of software available to you.

Of course, if the Mac operating system means a lot to you, then go right ahead and go that route.

I've never understood the fanaticism for their operating system, though. It's like obsessing over the rental car you get while in Las Vegas. Who gives a fuck about basic transportation (the operating system)? Vegas is all about the whores, gambling and ridiculously wasteful spending (or in computing terms, the programs, the internet, email, games, etc). If the best story you have from your visit to Vegas is that you got satellite radio for free, you're a sucker.
