Yeah, this would be a very nice pick-up for them. Gives them a lot of what Artest did, defensively, but in a younger player who isn't as chuck-happy.

They can talk all they want, but the most they can offer Ariza is the MLE. The Lakers just have to offer a tiny bit more and Ariza will go running back to the Lakers.

Word is that he was so insulted by initial offer that he would just assume take the MLE elsewherre if it came to that, since appeartenly the Lake Show isnt willing to go above it.

Yeah, I don't think LA has a "soft factor" advantage of Ariza wanting to play for them anymore. If they offer the most, I'm sure he'll re-sign, but he may not sign with LA for the same money.

Personally, I think Ariza needs the Lakers more than the Lakers need Ariza.

yep hometown discount I think is gone. However I also agree that Ariza needs the Lakers more than they need him, although the need of him increases if Odom signs elsewhere.

He "needs the Lakers" like any role-player needs a top team...role-players look better when surrounded by talent. He has solid talent and will be good for any team, but in LA (or Cleveland or even, say, Portland), he'll look even better.

I wonder if we could pry Battier away from them?

Rudy, Blake, Outlaw, Przybilla for Battier, Brooks and Scola?

Without Ming, McGrady, or Artest, I'm not scared of the Rockets any longer.

Artest is going to the Lakers. That means Ariza isn't returning. Now I'm intrigued because it seems like we can get him for a TINY bit more than the MLE. 6.5M/Year?

I doubt Ariza even had Portland on his radar. He was down right scared the last time he was in Portland.

It doesn't need to be complex. Sign Hedo. Trade Joel for Battier and future picks, since HOU now has Ariza and no one over 6'8 on their roster. Then see if Blake/Outlaw/Webster/picks/rights/etc. can get you either a good big (like Varejao or Lee) or a good PG (Hinrich? Sessions?)

If you don't you could run a lineup of Roy/Hedo/Battier/LMA/Oden. Swapping in Rudy and Batum as needed. Lots of flexibility there.

I love Battier. I've wanted Battier for ages. But if we sign Hedo we need Joel more than Battier. And think how Rudy would squeal THEN.

(I'd consider Rudy for Battier. That's how much I love Battier.)
