As a Goldman alum, I can categorically state that the vast majority of the people that work there are just trying to do the best they can for their clients. Incentives are aligned there well enough that poor behavior or cheating meant a lower bonus and less business. I can't speak for the people that ran divisions, but I was a mid-level merchant banker there, so I saw enough to have a good read of the company (at least on Broad Street).
