The New York Yankees had a good mixture of veterans and younger players on their roster through out the 2009 season. This is the kind of roster that wins championships. If you look at the whole year, they had younger players called up that will not be on the ALCS roster but they did contribute. Here's a look at what the Yankees had...

    1. Jorge Posada - Great hitting catcher. Defense is questionable.
    2. Robinson Cano - Great hitting second baseman
    3. Derek Jeter - All around great player. I don't think he's declining that much at short stop.
    4. Brett Gardner - Young player with great speed. I'd love to see him get another chance at starting next year.
    5. Francisco Cervelli - He looks like he could be the future catcher. The Yanks might not bring back Molina and Jorge is really old for a catcher.
    6. Ramiro Pena - Good utility player
    7. Shelley Duncan - Not that good actually. Great in the minors but can't seem to bring it to the pro-level.
    8. Juan Miranda - Decent back up. Don't know what his future is.

    1. Andy Pettitte - He's been around a long time and knows how to pitch in New York.
    2. Chien Ming Wang - Wasn't good this year but will be better next year. Just had shoulder surgery.
    3. Joba Chamberlain - Great young arm for the bull pen. The starting rotation is another long story.
    4. Mariano Rivera - The best ever.
    5. Phil Coke - Good lefty to have out of the bull pen. He set a Yankees rookie-record with 72 appearances.
    6. Mark Melancon - Very young player that could be the next Yankees' closer.
    7. Philip Hughes - Didn't start out well as a starter but dominated as a reliever.
    8. David Robertson - A very good reliever with a bright future.

With Austin Jackson on his way up next year and hopefully with some more power, the Yankees have a real bright future even after they spent a lot of money on free agents in the off season. In the past, the Yankees traded away a lot of their young players for established players and it didn't always work out.

Some have criticized Cashman for not going after Johan Santana but Hughes has been very valuable out of the bull pen. Some people think that's crazy comparing a starter to a reliever but Santana did get hurt and made almost 19 million dollars in 2009. Hughes is almost like the 96 Rivera where once the game goes six or seven innings and the Yankees are winning, the party is over.

The Yankees have a bright future with their relief corps and some position players. The only thing they need to develop now is dominant starting pitching but it's hard when you're picking almost last in the minor league draft every year.
