"The Braves placed two players on the disabled list in their first two days in Washington, first Yunel Escobar, then Jair Jurrjens. Two innings into Wednesday night's game against the Nationals, their electric rookie right fielder Jason Heyward had to leave with a strained right groin.

The Braves are hurting, but they began to feel better with a 7-6 win in 10 innings Wednesday night. They used a game-winning hit from the struggling Matt Diaz to end a streak of eight consecutive road losses and even this series 1-1.

"Matty got a huge hit off of one of the hottest relievers in the game right now," Chipper Jones said. "That's what happens when you execute stuff. You get a leadoff base hit by Troy, get a bunt down, get two chances to get 'em in ,and Matty only needed one."

The Braves had to get past Nationals closer Matt Capps, who had been 11-for-11 in saves to lead the majors. As he started the 10th, his second inning of work, the Braves got to him with a leadoff single by Troy Glaus. Brandon Hicks, who made his major league debut as a pinch runner, scored the winning run after he was bunted over by Melky Cabrera and scored on Diaz's single to right.

It was the fourth hit with a runner in scoring position for the Braves, who had found them scarce in recent days. Diaz had entered the game hitting only .180 (9-for-50), but managed a double and the biggest hit of the night."
