"In the business of developing good boys, the Bengals have hit and missed over the years, more of the latter. That doesn't mean they'll stop trying, though, bless 'em. Pacman Jones is close to signing with The Redeemer's team. Once he gets the Racers clause in his deal, he'll be good to go. (That's a joke, OK? No calls to the home phone, please.)

The point in acquiring players, as I understand it, is to make your team better. Here's how the Bengals are better if they sign Adam Jones, assuming he makes the club which admittedly is a big assumption:

They get a veteran with a solid knowledge of the criminal justice system. He can advise the younger guys on what to do when they get popped. He will be a team leader in this category. A real pro.

He will know what to do with spare change, such as dollar bills.

He has a good working relationship with the NFL office on Park Avenue. The Bengals had lost that helpful pipeline for a few years. Jones brings it back. That kind of inside connection is invaluable in today's NFL.

You simply can't put a price tag on these assets. These intangibles are missing in most NFL towns. You can't find a guy like Pacman just anywhere. He is one of a kind.

Does it matter that the Bengals do not need another cornerback? That they already have two on-the-cusp stars, Johnathan Joseph and Leon Hall? That they thought enough of rookie Brandon Ghee to spend a third-round draft pick on him last month? That they have two other backups, Morgan Trent and David Jones, who contributed to last year's 4th-ranked defense?

    It doesn't? It doesn't matter?

Well, how about the return game? Pacman is a good punt returner, isn't he? He averaged five yards a return the last time he played, which was in 2008. The Bengals last year averaged almost 12 yards a punt return, second best in the league. There is that.

Six arrests? Twelve run-ins with cops? League suspensions totaling 22 games? T

These things happen. You don't win in the NFL with choir boys, brother. You win with guys who have multiple DUIs, assault charges, felony charges, felony assault charges, probation violations, rehab visits, court appearances, bar fights, domestic violence charges and charges of resisting arrest. You win with guys whose middle names are "Alleged.''"

This is a very risky move. Six arrests, twelve run-ins with cops and 22 games of suspension.. Why did they even do this.
