Which teams did best at Supplemental Draft?
Our contributors unanimous on LA Galaxy's selection prowess

Simon Borg's winners: LA Galaxy, Columbus Crew, Chicago Fire
Los Angeles: The Galaxy’s Supplemental picks have the credentials to push for playing time in 2011. Dartmouth’s Daniel Keat [WATCH: Daniel Keat highlights] has the international experience and a professional focus about him, while Dustin McCarty has the athletic ability and a winner’s attitude. Stanford’s Ryan Thomas is a speedy left back who should have been at the Combine. Zach Johnson has the most to prove of the foursome: He's a big ‘keeper who is said to be good on crosses but weaker on his kicking game and stopping the low shot.keat

Travis Clark's winners: LA Galaxy, Toronto FC, Real Salt Lake
Los Angeles: New Zealand U-20 international and versatile midfielder Daniel Keat are good-value picks, and the Galaxy got a similar player in Dustin McCarty, little brother of Dax. However, they took a risk on West Virginia 'keeper Zack Johnson, who will compete for a understudy role

Ángel delighted to finally join LA Galaxy
    [IMG]
After month-long negotiation, striker becomes club's third DP

After weeks of anticipation and speculation, the Los Angeles Galaxy finally got their man.

Juan Pablo Angel and the Galaxy agreed to terms on Wednesday to make the Colombian striker the club’s third Designated Player, along with Landon Donovan and David Beckham.

While LA had held the striker’s rights since taking him in the Re-Entry Draft on Dec. 15, a month passed without a deal. But it was worth the wait, Ángel said.

“Like any deal, there were some issues you had to go through,” he said in a conference call on Wednesday. “The holidays and the timing and the draft and all those things that were up in the air didn’t help, but I was always hoping. I’m delighted that all the patience and the wait finally paid off.”

Now that Ángel is signed and sealed and all but delivered – he's slated to arrive in Southern California in the coming days – Bruce Arena said the process of building the team ahead of training camp can now begin in earnest.

“He’s not only a quality player, but a quality person, and he’ll bring a lot to the Galaxy on and off the field and certainly in the locker room,” the Galaxy head coach told MLSsoccer.com.

LA Galaxy to Play Club Tijuana of Mexico in “San Diego Clasico” on March 2 at Torero Stadium
    [IMG]

CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy announced today that the club will play Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente of Mexico’s Liga de Ascenso in the "San Diego Clasico", presented by Freeway Insurance, on Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. The game will be played at Torero Stadium on the campus of the University of San Diego.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public starting on Wednesday, February 2 at 10 a.m. with tickets starting at just $25 by calling the University of San Diego’s JCP Ticket Office at (619) 260-7550 or by clicking here.

“We are very excited to announce this match against Club Tijuana in San Diego, a market that is important to our organization and one where we have wanted to play for quite some time,” LA Galaxy President of Business Operations Tom Payne said. “In addition, it is a good game for us against a quality opponent as we complete our preseason preparations for the 2011 MLS season.”

Club Tijuana is coached by former Club America and Mexican National Team midfielder Joaquín Del Olmo, who in his first season with the club guided the Xoloitzcuintles to their first title last December, winning the Liga de Ascenso Apertura Season. Led by their captain Javier Gandolfi, goalkeeper Adrian Zermeno and forward Raúl Enríquez, Club Tijuana posted an impressive 11-1-5 record last season. Gandolfi, a defender from Argentina, and Zermeno, who spent eight seasons at Toluca, spearhead their defense, which conceded only seven goals in 21 games last season.

This season, Club Tijuana is 0-1-1 in the Clausura Season. The Xoloitzcuintles play their first home game of the season this Sunday, when the club hosts León, which is currently in fourth place of table with a 2-1-0 record.

This will be the Galaxy’s first ever game at the 6,000 seat Torero Stadium, which was built in 1961 and is home of the University of San Diego Football and Soccer programs.

Galaxy, Revs battle elements, each other to 1-1 tie
CARSON, Calif. – Shalrie Joseph and Juninho traded first-half goals as the LA Galaxy and New England Revolution split points in a 1-1 draw at The Home Depot Center on Sunday.

Torrential rain had soaked Southern California throughout the day and as such the clubs dealt with wet, chilly and windy conditions.

The Galaxy were once again shorthanded to start the match, as Omar Gonzalez, Donovan Ricketts and Juan Pablo Angel were not in the starting lineup. Angel, though, dressed and made his Galaxy debut as a second-half substitute.

Galaxy sign Ireland international forward Robbie Keane
Former Tottenham striker will join LA as a Designated Player

When the LA Galaxy acquire new weapons, they always go for the big guns.

On Monday, the MLS-leading Galaxy officially announced that they had come to terms with Irish international Robbie Keane, the 10th all-time leading scorer in English Premier League history. He arrives on a transfer from EPL side Tottenham Hotspur.

Keane, who will join the club’s roster upon receipt of his visa paperwork, will be a Designated Player, meaning that the Galaxy will have to get rid of one of their current DPs: Landon Donovan, David Beckham or Juan Pablo Ángel. There are reports that Ángel, the former New York Red Bulls star, will be moved in a trade at some point this week, with Chivas USA and the Philadelphia Union being mentioned as possible destinations.

LA clinch 2nd straight Supporters' Shield with Seattle loss
    [IMG]
    Thanks to Sounders' defeat,
Galaxy secure home field, CCL berth

The LA Galaxy's trophy cabinet got a little bit more crowded on Saturday night
No, they didn't take the field, but they manged to take home some silverware anyway. It came in the form of their second straight Supporters' Shield, courtesy of the Philadelphia Union's 2-0 win over the Seattle Sounders.

With the result, the Galaxy have mathetmatically clinched the Shield, and with it the top seed — and the accompanying home-field advantage — throughout the 2011 MLS Cup playoffs.

LA becomes the third straight team to win consecutive Shields, following D.C. United (2006-07) and Columbus (2008-09). They also tie United with their fourth Shield overall — the first coming in 1998 and the second in 2002, the year in which they did the Shield and MLS Cup double

Recap: Keane, Galaxy with familiar result in Indonesia
    [IMG]
LA open Asia Pacific Tour with 1-0 win in Indonesia

No matter the continent, one thing is sure this year: The Galaxy will win 1-0.

A 14th-minute goal from Robbie Keane led the Galaxy past the Indonesian National Selection in the MLS side's first exhibition match of their Asia Pacific Tour.

The matchwinner came when Mike Magee floated down the left side and curled a tantalizing cross. No one could connect cleanly with the initial ball, but LA striker Adam Cristman got to the loose ball first and laid it off to Keane, who bent it calmly into the side netting.

The Galaxy started their regulars, including David Beckham, Landon Donovan, and Omar Gonzalez. They played their usual, patient style: compact in the back and attacking on the flanks. They had the better of the attacking play, both before and after the goal, but were unable to create more than a few clear-cut chances

Recap: Big three shine as Galaxy roll over Philippines
Beckham, Donovan, Keane all in fine form in rout in Manila

When you have the big three that the LA Galaxy have, you've already got a leg up. Or three legs.

The DP trio of David Beckham, Robbie Keane, and Landon Donovan provided the spark and the hammer on Saturday against the Philippines National Team in a 6-1 victory in Manila.

Beckham and Keane both scored for the Galaxy, as did Mike Magee of a pinpoint ball from Donovan. Adam Cristman and veteran Gregg Berhalter finished out the scoring for the MLS Cup champions.

Phil Younghusband notched the Philippines' lone goal.

Donovan to return to Everton on two-month loan
Galaxy star bound for Goodison Park, could debut Jan. 4

Landon Donovan is headed back to Merseyside.

The LA Galaxy announced on Thursday that the MLS superstar will join Everton on a two-month loan beginning on Jan. 1, reuniting him with the EPL club he represented during a similar loan two years ago.

Donovan appeared in 13 games for Everton in 2010, scoring two goals and drawing rave reviews on his first shot at playing in the English Premier League. He used that loan largely to stay fit ahead of the World Cup in South Africa, and this time he’s eager to return to the club and reunite with his former teammates.

Beckham signs new two-year deal to return to Galaxy
Agreement ends months of speculation for LA's celebrated star

David Beckham isn’t done with MLS yet.

The LA Galaxy announced on Wednesday that the league’s most celebrated Designated Player will return for another season in 2012, ending months of speculation that the Beckham Era in MLS had reached its conclusion.

Instead, the 36-year-old superstar has re-upped for two more years with the Galaxy in hopes of defending the MLS Cup championship he helped them win last November. Beckham, who was named to the MLS Best XI last season for the first time since joining MLS midway through the 2007 season, became the first Designated Player in league history to hoist the MLS Cup when LA topped the Houston Dynamo 1-0 at the Home Depot Center on Nov. 25.

Two sources who were unable to speak on the record confirmed Donovan’s return. He is the all-time Major League Soccer leader in goals and assists but has not been training regularly with the Galaxy first team, so it’s unknown when he might be ready play in his first game.

Donovan, 34, cited burnout when he retired from soccer six months after being cut from the U.S. national team by Coach Juergen Klinsmann ahead of the 2014 World Cup. Donovan, who is also the leading scorer in U.S. history, is eligible for selection to the national team.
