It must be tempting right now for the Montreal Alouettes to book Olympic Stadium for the East Division final on Nov. 21.

Sure quarterback Anthony Calvillo and receiver Ben Cahoon are a year older, and centre Bryan Chui has retired. But head coach Marc Trestman has proved a quick study through two CFL seasons and no one has a better track record at filling roster holes than general manager Jim Popp.

“That’s what you build for, to be that ultimate team,” Popp said. “Like the [New York] Yankees or the [Montreal] Canadiens in their day. It’s very difficult to sit on that perch. But it only makes you stronger because you get a big test every week.”

The Als’ dominance since returning to the CFL in 1996, has been nothing short of stunning. Over that span, they have finished below .500 just once. Montreal has played in 13 of the past 15 East Division finals and reached seven of the past 10 Grey Cup games (winning twice: 2002 and 2009).
