Here's the GS page with schedule, scores, roster, etc: http://www.nba.com/summerleague2010/teams/warriors/ Warriors play NO tonight at 7pm. $14.95 to watch all the games at nba.com. Anyone know of another stream? It's also at http://atdhe.net/ Here's ESPN's Arnovitz talking about GS: Funny that Anthony Randolph is still on the GS summer league roster. Will he stay with them for the summer, or will he play for NY summer league?
Well, after searching around on the internet, I realized that my Comcast cable package gives me NBA TV, and the games are localized, which means I get all the GS summer league games in HD! Yeah! So I got to watch this one in HD. Warriors win by 1 point. A few notes: Brandan Wright looked pretty good after a 1.5 year layoff. He seems to have gotten bigger, a bit broader in the shoulders, actually looks quite wide and large in the upper body, which I was surprised to see. Still not a power player, though. He had 18 points -- a few good hooks, a dunk, a jumper, a couple of and-1 plays, actually went 6-9 from the FT line. Looked a bit rusty as well. had a few blocks, but one block he pulled down and then immediately turned it over on the outlet pass, he also had 6 fouls, a few trying to go for blocks. The thing I was happy with is that he went down hard a few times and got right back up. That will be good for his confidence. He even got in a verbal exchange with Pondexter after a hard foul. That's reassuring to see him get back in there and mix it up after the shoulder injury. Kim Tillie was the late replacement for Randolph, and he looked very good in the post. Nice rebounds, finishes, and jumpers. Pleasantly suprised with him. Andre Brown looked like a bit of a beast out there. Banging, rebounding, finishing, he's another tall PF like Tillie (and the warriors have several of those already), but he might get a look by a few teams. Reggie Williams had 22 points but was thoroughly unimpressive. He was a bit of a ball hog and did not play particularly well. Brian Chase looked very good finding the open men, a scrappy PG who seemed to get more attention as the game went on. A little short though at 5-10, but very scrappy. Steph Curry and Ekpe Udoh sat together watching the action. Udoh had another evaluation on his wrist today, but there's no formal announcement yet. Larry Riley and Nellie sat together. Riley had a fat chew in his mouth, and got nice camera time spitting his tobacco spit into a Gatorade cup. That was flattering. Woodside looked pretty good, sort of like Steve Blake, he hit a few nice threes, but defensively seemed to be getting lost several times. Although, in general, defense for both teams was not great (the 10 foul rule has something to do with that). Interesting that only 9 out of the 16 guys on the roster played, and one of those was the late addition Tillie. He might be a sleeper, looked pretty darn good. Brown could be a sleeper too. After hearing that Morrow is going to the Nets, we need to find at least one new sleeper!
Just watched the game on DVR. I don't have much to say as AO summed it up pretty nicely. I even saw Riley with a Sandoval-esque chew in his mouth. LOL. I'm encouraged by Brandan Wright surviving his first game. He looked rusty but he looks to be assertive. He also looks a tad bit bulkier too. I think he might be our sleeper this year and will make us forget about Randolph's upside, whatever that is. Larry Riley mentioned on KNBR that Udoh's injury is "extensive." Not confirmed as broken but he says there might be some tendon damage, which could be worse. All in all, really sucks that he got injured.
Thanks for the recap AO. I caught a little bit of it, on TV, as I didn't have much time. Also, this summer league team is probably one of the worst talent-wise in years especially with Udoh out. As I said before, I just want Wright to get minutes, because those injuries have really impacted his development.
Warriors lost to Detroit by 20 pts, 89-69. Here's the recap and box score: http://www.nba.com/summerleague/games/20100710/DETGSW/gameinfo.html I was hoping we could see Udoh play tonight against Greg Monroe, but of course he's out. Brandan Wright looked good early. He scored 8 points in the first few minutes. Had a few sweet 15 foot jumpers, went to the foul line a lot, crashed to the floor and got up, actually was 7-10 from FT, Kevin McHale was making fun of his sideways "orbital" rotation on his FTs... Wright didn't play in the 2nd half, which was weird, not sure if it was precaution or what... Reggie Williams looked like Corey Maggette out there, just padding his stats it seemed, trying to score every time, missing a lot of shots, and not really doing to much to help the team. My opinion of him is beginning to sour a bit. Austin Daye had a field day with him, scoring at will and getting to the rack repeatedly. Greg Monroe was a non factor at first, then came on to do a few things. He made some very nifty post passes, and had a few good post moves. He also had some lackluster post moves, and a few turnovers. And he missed a wide open layup. McHale and John Thompson were getting on him for being too unselfish. They were saying it was like he was getting the ball in the post, and just waiting for the double team so he could make a pass. McHale said he needs to learn how to attack first in the NBA, or the double will never come. Thompson said Monroe has bought in to the whole "good passer" thing too much, now he's trying to pass every time... he did have some nice plays, and a few times ran coast to coast and finished a layup and dunk on fast breaks... but his post moves weren't very polished, in general. Also he's not very good at getting up to or above the rim... he kind of plays under it... Really wish I could have seen Udoh go against him... Way, way too much dribbling by GS guards. It was ugly out there. Guys just trying to show they can do things, trying to impress with and-1 crap, rather than being concerned with what the coaches want to see. John Thompson was saying that rarely do these young guys approach the coach and ask what they'll be looking for.. they just get out there and try to show they can be like Kobe or LeBron... meanwhile Jerebko was a spark plug for Detroit without ever getting a single play called for him, it seemed...Very few bright spots for GS... Wright was pretty much it in the first half... Andre Brown continued to bang, tip loose balls, and get a few putbacks, but he also airballed a freethrow and missed some point blank 2 footers. I like this Kim Tillie kid from France. He is scrappy and heady, had a few nice finishes under the rim, including a baseline reverse and-1. I doubt GS will sign him though. They need wings... Which leads me to my final point. For a team that needs wing players desperately, they sure have assembled a strange summer league team. Basically, it's a boat load of PFs and Cs... with two tiny, 5-10 point guards, and then Reggie Williams going Jordan the whole game... Why they didn't try to bring on a bunch of SFs, some outside shooters who are 6-6, 6-7, 6-8.... you know, like Morrow was... is beyond me... they only brought one (Kasib Powell). I don't really see anyone else on the summer league roster doing anything for the current GS roster... except BWright and RWilliams, but they're already on the team, so
Warriors face John Wall and the Wizards tonight at 5pm. Again, I reiterate that GS has a somewhat strange roster given their current team needs. Here's a breakdown of weight, size, and age: http://www.ridiculousupside.com/2010/7/8/1557709/warriors-summer-league-roster Substitute the 6'11" Frenchman Kim Tillie in place of Anthony Randolph. As I've already said, as far as who is getting playing time, it's basically a bunch of PFs and Cs with two 5'10" point guards, and Reggie Williams going Jordan the whole time. They have two other short guards, in Jason Rich ans Kashif Watson, but both are under 6'4" and haven't gotten any PT. Really, other than Reggie Williams, the Warriors only have TWO other wing players in Kasib Powell and Joe Engles. But they haven't really impressed yet. Powell is 6-7 and apparently plays the wing, but he's looked a bit more like a PF in the summer league. He did have a crazy night in the DLeague once, dropping 46 points with 10 threes. So maybe he'll come around: Joe Ingles is supposed to be a wing player, but we have yet to see anything. He only took 2 shots the first game and 4 shots the second game. He missed all of them. Here's a vid on him: But other than Reggie "Air Jordan" Williams, Joe Ingles and Kasib Powell, there are no other wing players, no other guys around 6-7 or 6-8 who can shoot from outside and play the SF. It's weird, and frankly pretty ugly to watch. No outside shooters. It's bunch of slow, big bodies, and then these two tiny PGs sharing minutes. I don't see how this is going to help GS solidify their roster much. They should be stacked with guys 6-7 or 6-8, that can shoot from outside and play SF. They should be playing run-n-gun, trying to find a player who might fit with Nellie. But they're not really doing that. Really, Reggie Williams is getting all the love, he's shot 37 times the last two games. I guess it makes sense if they think Williams is their #1 priority to sort out. Maybe they're not sold on him yet. That seems to be what it is. They're probably saying "okay Reggie, this is your team, show us you are the man." I guess their roster isn't really that strange, I just figured they would be trying to feature wing players, some 6-7 Swing men who can shoot and defend, but so far Ingles and Powell have been afterthoughts, it's really these tiny PGs, Williams, and then the big men. I have a feeling John Wall is going to go OFF tonight on these 5'10" PGs, lol...
I caught bits and pieces of the last two games. Reggie Williams is definitely ball hogging like crazy out there, I'm guessing/hoping its because its SL and he just wants to get his reps and sees no point in passing to these scrubs. During the season I got the impression that hes a very heady player who makes the right pass and I still think he is. SL just brings out the ball hog in these guys lol. BTW its not totally discouraging- I think Reggie Rain is going to be our sixth man this season and while I love that he can score and pass I don't think its necessarily a bad thing for him to learn how to attack and get FTs like Mags. Dude was diving to the rim HARD in what few possessions I saw from him. I just read an article this morning about how he wants to be a defensive stopper for the W's this season. He did ok to get in Daye's way but that dude is a lot bigger than him and is just flat out skilled. Good effort but questionable results defensively on Daye. Wright is kind of hit and miss on offense. I like that the team is making a concerted effort to feed him. He makes some decent moves and hit some nice shots from 10 feet out while being defended. He looks a little bigger in the upper body and while he still gets thrown around he actually did hold his own on post position defensively against Monroe a few times (though you could tell he was laboring). Still not much of a factor rebounding on offense. The most encouraging thing was really seeing him be a presence on defense. Dude is an absolute freak even by NBA standards with the length and hops. He wards off a lot of shots just by being there and he was aggressive in chasing down ball handlers around the paint. I believe he scored something like 13 points in 14 minutes last night and the SL team is a lot better when hes in. Still don't think I've seen the Tillie guy play but hes putting up nice numbers. Andre Brown looks active on the glass and rebounding but I don't see any room for another PF on this roster. Everyone else sucks.
Wright out today. Jesus Christ. Reggie dominating, actually making good passes. Don't think I'll watch much more of this game.
Kevin McHale said he was out because the team wanted him to sit and nurse his shoulder a little more. Totally precautionary, according to team sources... The game was pretty boring. I see no one on the SL roster that will help the team. Reggie Williams looks good but he should look good. I think the coaches have told him to take the lead. They're going to use him as the primary backup SG this season.
John Wall looked pretty good overall, super fast, of course some of the same nice moves he's already shown, 24 points, 8 assists but 8 TOs as well... Damn, this dude JaVale McGee looked like an animal out there. 7 footer, wide shoulders, super hops, running the floor, doing break away windmill dunks, he must have had like 50 alley oop dunks, changing half of the Warriors shots with his length, he looked like he was about 6 inches taller than everyone else on the floor, and about 20 pounds heavier too, WTF... That guy is a monster. Reggie Williams looked great tonight, much better IMO than the last 2 games... really played under control, looked like a vet compared to a lot of the players, he dropped 34 points and helped keep it close. I also really liked Tillie's game overall, McHale has ben impressed with him, says he keeps being in the right place at the right time, defensively, which has been good. Pretty much every one else were non-factors. The few guys who could actually play SF for GS got very little PT and are not going to produce anything in this Summer League. I don't really know what the Warriors are using this valuable scouting time for.... but running the offense through DeAndre Brown, a Drew Gooden clone, is not going to do anything for GS. It was Reggie Williams and the big men again. Basically, we learned nothing useful for the upcoming season.
They say it's precautionary, but he got "stung" on a foul, and he admitted it's sore. You have to wonder about this friggin shoulder...
Shoulders are a bitch. I dislocated mine like 3 years ago snowboarding and every now and then, I'll jolt it playing bball. It stays sore for a few days, up to a week sometimes. But I've been lucky to not have it pop out again. They say the younger it happens to you, the more likely it will be a chronic problem. Hopefully the surgery he got is more advanced than what normal people get. My brother also has had shoulder problems and has had multiple surgeries (he races motorcross). He pretty much just learned to deal with it as it kept popping out.
Sorry that happened to you, DK. That sounds like a tough one to deal with. What do you think Wright's going through right now (as you have experienced it as well)? I thought he had not one but two surgeries (I could be wrong though). It sounds like these can vary greatly in severity -- some people can pop it in and out with no problem, and as soon as they pop it back in it doesn't hurt. Others, like your case, it hurts for a while afterward. Wright sounds like he's in the same boat as you. What does he need to do mentally to overcome this fear?
It's all good. My shoulder is the least of my worries. I have ankles made out of Ruffles chips. I think BWright should be okay so long as he keeps up the rehab. It takes a good year to fully recover from a shoulder injury. I'm sure these athletes get super duper treatment so I suspect he will fully recover. He just has to take it slow and work his way back into game shape.
FWIW he hit the deck a lot in the first two summer league games. Didn't seem like he was playing with much fear or anxiety about the shoulder. Do those shoulder braces help much? He should wear one of those.
I've had dislocation problems with both my left and right shoulders. I had two surgeries on my left one because it kept popping out when I dove for balls from SS (I have not redone my right one, just decided to avoid exposing it when I play hoops). When my surgeon checked me out he said look out for my right one because the tendons were loose there as well. Well what do you know, 10 years later that one goes out. Shoulder dislocations are a bit*h, they hurt like a mother and you get to go right to the front of the line in the ER. The rehab is long (5-6 mos.) and brutal, you have to immobilize them for a month and they atrophy almost to the bone then you have to build it back up again. The good news is it may come back stronger because you have rebuilt all of the muscles around it. Webber did it and he came back fine. You have to be cautious, if you have ever had an injury, even if your doctor says you are fine, mentally you have to get hit and gain some confidence that it will hold up. (Look at Run BJM's sig shot of Ellis, putting your arm out there, that's when a shoulder would pop out, I know mine would). Good luck to Brandon.
