Even those who are betting on horses haven’t seen this kind of controversy in years in their sport. It seems like every day, a new program is coming under investigation for something or other, and it looks like USC may only be the beginning of college teams facing tougher scrutiny. But we’re here to talk about action on the field, and while this won’t take place for another couple of seasons, it’s still worth nothing, and even being excited for.

Those who are doing their NFL betting online surely remember what kind of professional factories Miami and Notre Dame used to be, and their rivalry in the 1990s is the stuff of legends. It really got hot in 1985, when the Hurricanes routed the Fighting Irish 58-7 and made no bones about the fact that they were running up the score. Who can forget the famous “Catholics vs. Convicts” games from 1988-1990, which ultimately was the demise of the series? In 1988, a 31-30 loss to the Fighting Irish was the only thing that stood in the way of a second straight national title, but the Hurricanes returned the favor in 1989 with a 27-10 drubbing that ended Notre Dame’s 23-game winning streak. The series ended after the 1990 game, a 29-20 loss in South Bend that ended another Miami dream of back-to-back national championships.

With all the bad blood between the two programs, officials thought it best to end the series. But in 2012, the rivalry will begin again as the two will meet in a neutral-site affair at Soldier Field in Chicago, and then they’ll play home and homes, with the first coming in South Bend. After a dormant period where neither team was a legitimate college football betting favorite, both programs are on the march back. The Hurricanes were 9-4 last year with one of the toughest schedules in the nation, and hopes are high for 2010. Meanwhile, the Fighting Irish are starting fresh with Brian Kelly and his spread attack that he brought from Cincinnati, and by the time he faces the Hurricanes in Chicago, he should have a good hold on which direction the program is going to go.

Change is always good, and it’s always fun to see some of the newer programs step up. But how can you not get excited when teams like Miami and Notre Dame are in the conversation again? Like we said, it’ll take time for Notre Dame to be mentioned, but with Kelly at the helm, the odds are good, while the Hurricanes could challenge for the ACC title this season. We’re betting that in 2012, the Miami-Notre Dame will have major stakes on the table, just like old times.
