Number #1 ranked WBA middleweight contender Gennady Golovkin (18-0, 15 KO’s) will be fighting Colombian middleweight contender Milton Nunez (21-1-1, 19 KO’s) for the World Boxing Association middleweight interim title on August 14th at the Arena Roberto Duran, in Panama City, Panama. Instead of fighting Nunez, who is only ranked number #13 by the WBA, Golovkin should be fighting WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm for the title. After all, Sturm hasn’t defended his WBA title for an entire year since July 11th 2009, and it’s silly that’s allowed to hold onto the title for an entire year without once defending it. Sturm, 31, will finally be defending his WBA middleweight title on September 4th against Giovanni Lorenzo, who oddly enough, isn’t even ranked in the top 15 by the WBA.

That’s hard to understand who the WBA is going to let Sturm defend his title against Lorenzo rather than Golovkin. The only good that will come out of all this is once Golovkin defeats Nunez next week, he’ll then be in a good position to finally get a shot against Sturm after all these years of waiting in line while Sturm fought the likes of Koki Sato, Jamie Pittman, Noe Gonzales Alcoaba, Randy Griffin, Khoren Gevor and Sebastian Sylvester.
