World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion Ivan Calderon (34-1-1, 6 KO’s) finally met up with an opponent he couldn’t out-box in WBA fly light flyweight champion Giovanni Segura (25-1-1, 21 KO’s), who stopped Calderon in the 8th round of a scheduled 12 round bout at the Coliseo Mario ‘Quijot’ Morales, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The 35-year-old Calderon looked great in the early going, using his jab and a lot of movement to confound the Mexican slugger. It looked for awhile there like Calderon was going to be able to easily out-box Segura and hold onto his title. However, in the 5th round Segura hurt Calderon with a series of hard shots to the head. Segura continued to batter Calderon in the 6th round, as he was now showing his power advantage over the smaller Calderon.
